Anxious Democratic Governors Urge 2020 Field Not to Veer Too Far Left

July 19, 2019 at 6:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“After claiming governorships from Republicans in seven states last year, including in crucial presidential battlegrounds like Wisconsin and Michigan, Democratic governors should have good reason to celebrate,” the New York Times reports.

“But there was as much anxiety as optimism when the governors gathered for their annual fund-raising retreat on Nantucket last weekend and grappled with why a party that won with a pragmatic message in 2018 is now veering sharply to the left.”

“A group of governors are alarmed that their party’s presidential candidates are embracing policies they see as unrealistic and politically risky. And they are especially concerned about proposals that would eliminate private health insurance.”

What many call "too far left" are actually popular with a majority of Americans.

Medicare Option: good 70/ bad 25
Medicare for All without private insurance: good 41/ bad 54
(NPR/Marist Poll on policy opinions)

Let's also look at the 2018 Election We won the House by electing moderate candidates in swing districts...the same districts we'll need to win in 2020.

That's a concern for many not just the Democratic Govs.

There are many ways to help people with their Health Plans.. They want to build on ACA's strong foundation.

Biden is in Good Company!

Progressives Support Shoring Up ACA Before Tackling Medicare For All

Despite a large division in the Democratic party over the best health care solution ― single-payer or a continuation and possible expansion of something like Obamacare ― progressives in Congress appear to be in lockstep with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s priority of shoring up the ACA before tackling anything like Medicare for All.

“I’m happy to support any provision that strengthens the ACA and plug some of the gaps that we’re seeing, particularly as it’s under assault by the president,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) told HuffPost on Wednesday. “I think it’s part of a longer-term vision, at least for me, towards guaranteeing ― truly guaranteeing ― health care for all Americans.”

Obama pointed out several times that he was president of all the people... yes, I now many Dems don’t want to hear that....

And he more recently warned candidates to not go to far left with “free” we all know, nothing is free!

"NO WE CANT" milennials might not support it but this type of framing ought to be hugely popular with boomers.

...too far to the Left, too far to the Left, keep your powder dry, take the high, play your vest close to your cards...

...wouldn't want to upset anyone, wouldn't want to incite a debate, wouldn't want to step on any corporate toes, wouldn't want to be out front on anything, wouldn't want to appear aggressive in any way, play it safe, man, play it safe...

...trump convinced a large portion of working class Democratic voters that he was more in tune with our Democratic interests than the Dems were...how could this be?...there were trump/pence signs alongside Union Home signs all around my neighborhood...confusing?

...not really...
