"Head of nurses union 'counting on' Trump for single-payer system"

DeMoro, who serves as executive director of both the Oakland-based National Nurses United and the California Nurses Association, told POLITICO California on Thursday that she is “disgusted” with Democrats like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and believes that the president-elect may actually get action.

CNA and Retiring Head RoseAnn DeMoro Leave Labor in Critical Condition

Dubbed by many the nation’s most progressive labor union the CNA in fact provides a case study in how organized labor — the engine for creating the most prosperous working class in the known world — finds itself at death’s door at the exact moment when American workers are in dire need of advocates.

OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA — “C’mon people, what are some more nurses values?”

I was nearly four months into my stint in the communications office at the California Nurses Association, or CNA, when I found myself in a half-lit, mildewed, second-floor conference room in the union’s downtown Oakland office, seated among a clutch of maybe seven or eight other communications staffers, all white with the exception of myself and an Asian woman.

The task this late April afternoon was to identify “nurses’ values,” which I had assumed meant that I would help pore over the results of a nurses’ questionnaire to produce a coherent ad campaign.

Instead, the communications manager, Sarah Cecile, stood astride an easel that leaned like a sprinter at the finish line, her magic marker poised to add to the wan list of nouns that glared accusingly at me, reducing Hegelian dialectical inquiry to a game of charades.

“Wait,” I said, “we’re telling the nurses what their values should be? Shouldn’t we be asking the nurses what their values are — you know, like in a survey, or a poll?”

"Fawning" is exactly right!

Central to this narrative is DeMoro, who announced her retirement in a March 6th tweet and will be leaving the post she has held for 32 years. While she is feted and fawned over by white liberal journalists such as Amy Goodman, Paul Jay, and Bill Moyers, rank-and-file nurses of color and community activists often describe her and the NNU as either loathsome or missing-in-action when it comes to the issues that are important to them

And, now these Scorched Earth tweets all over after he retirement doesn't speak well for RDM at all!

Thank You, George!

You want people engaged then they have to at least help to set the values. A decent facilitator can guide, but the people who own the job and the processes must be the ones to set values, and also to generate any kind of improvement.

Funny how this particular union, under this woman's leadership was straight 'theory X.'

I'm a big proponent of unions, but they've got to refresh themselves, or maybe reinvent themselves, or some other re-verb. Because some seem to have leaders quite divorced from the actual needs and interests of rank and file.

I googled for any appearance of her name on the Sanders campaign web site, there was only one hit, a quote that was used by an organizer for a local event https://act.berniesanders.com/event/Organizing_Kickoff_Main_Attend/798?

For a "prominent surrogate," she appears to keep an awfully low profile in his campaign.

105. As for the Sirota tweet, I guess the objectionable part is calling it Bidencare?
Sun Jul 21, 2019, 09:44 AM
Jul 2019

I mean other than that, it's been an argument between Biden and Sanders about the pros and cons of the different policies, which is fair game, it's not personal attack.

At any rate, Sirota did not call it Bidencare, that was the term used by the author of the article he was quoting. But I'll grant you that it was his choice to tweet the quote.

I'm not sure it's an insult, though. Is it really a personal attack, giving Biden ownership of his plan to keep and tweak Obamacare? Maybe Biden should take the term and run with it, like Obama did.

been talking about it but he shouted it for two years and the country heard. There was a huge shift in how people felt about socialized medicine and how they understood it. Sure Obamacare connected people to better healthcare and less worry about pre-existing conditions. But Bernie did his bit. His words got through to people and he changed hearts as well as minds. I don't agree with many of Bernie's policies. I hate what one of his supporters just posted. Bernie has to stop thinking of himself as entitled to the nomination. If he doesn't that will sink him fast.

A. It is not HIS idea
B. It is not mainstream -- it may be mainstream on DU but elsewhere it is seen like a Harry Potter novel.

The misconceptions are -- 1. Medicare is free, 2. Medicare covers everything, 3. Medicare eliminates the need for insurance. (None of which are true)

C. It may like a swell radical idea but if there ever was a suicidal issue in the campaign, MFA is.

Nixon proposed a plan that was to the left of the ACA.

It was one of Kennedy's biggest regrets of his career, because he said that if they went with Nixon's plan, we'd be much, much closer to something like the rest of the world had now.

I also think you may have forgotten that the 2018 blue wave was won on preserving the ACA.

106. DeMoro is one of the idiots who loudly supported Nader over Al Gore in 2000.

She supported a "movement leader" over the Democrat who would go on to win a Nobel Peace Prize for environmental activism.

DeMoro is one the "purist when it suits me" demagogues who gave us the George W. Bush presidency, the Iraq War, the Roberts Court, the financial collapse, the Citizens United decision, and the gutting of the Voting Rights Act.

One would think that after all that, DeMoro might consider that she should tread more carefully and perhaps talk less and listen more. But no, she did it a second time.

ODD UNION OUT: Following the Working Families Party’s endorsement of Hilary Clinton, there’s still a major leftist union holding out against the Democratic presidential candidate, reports BuzzFeed’s Cora Lewis. The 185,000-member National Nurses United “stands virtually alone,” Lewis writes, though many unions shared its opposition to Clinton during the primaries. “Since the Democratic National Convention, nearly every labor group has fallen in line behind the party’s nominee of choice,” including the CWA and American Postal Workers Union, which initially backed Sanders.

But NNU has always gone its own way. At the DNC, NNU members booed Clinton’s nomination (American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten told Lewis “You could always tell where they were sitting. They made themselves heard.”). One unidentified “high-ranking public union official” told Lewis that NNU Chief RoseAnn DeMoro was a “bomb thrower, not a bridge builder.”

DeMoro rejected that criticism, and said Clinton didn’t deserve the union’s support because the party platform lacked planks advocating Medicare for all, opposing the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or calling for a ban on fracking. But DeMoro left open the possibility that the union would put a Hillary endorsement to a vote.
