I really would have thought his political skills would be more polished at this point in his career, but he keeps showing he's really not ready for the national stage. He's been a disappointment for quite some time now, which is a shame. He is intelligent and talented, but he is politically tone deaf at times.

Cory Booker is sworn in as a U.S. senator in 2013 by then-Vice President Joe Biden. (John Munson |The Star-Ledger)

For Cory Booker, it’s no more Mr. Nice Guy

WASHINGTON — For Cory Booker, peace and love has given way to confrontation and criticism.

Booker, trailing in opinion polls and fundraising, has taken aim at former Vice President Joe Biden, the early frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination.

For almost a month now, he has leveled attacks on Biden that are getting more personal — ignoring the rest of the Democratic field as well as his own campaign mantra of emphasizing a positive vision for America

But in being aggressive, Booker runs the risk of losing the brand that made him a contender in the first place. His new stance isn’t sitting well with some fellow Jersey Democrats.

“If I was asked to give advice, I would say, ‘Cory, I love you. Stay away from doing this,’” said Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr., D-9th Dist. “'You have enough good qualities. You may get a few more headlines if you do it that way. It’s not worth it. It cheapens your own campaign, period.”

Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-12th Dist., said she worried that confrontations between Democrats now will provide ammunition to President Donald Trump later.

That sums it up perfectly. As for the advice, I'm thinking it is probably too late for Booker. He's already made a terrible impression on too many people. There's a certain desperation in the way he's running and it shows. Voters don't respond well to that in politicians.

For some time now, I've felt that Cory Booker thought he could be the next Obama and he even gave a speech at the Democratic convention that sounded much like Obama's speech in 2004. Never a good idea to try to emulate someone else. There is only one Barack Obama, better to be Cory Booker. Meanwhile, he might try being the best senator he can be. Worked for Teddy Kennedy and even Joe Biden.

Biden's full quote, with sarcasm at the end, about why people thought @KamalaHarris came off stronger in the first debate: "I was probably overly polite in the way I didn't respond to an attack, 'You're not a racist'--which is a nice thing to say, really reassuring."

FREEDOM AWARD

The Freedom Award is an annual event for the National Civil Rights Museum. Held each year in the fall, The Freedom Award honors individuals who have made significant contributions in civil rights and who have laid the foundation for present and future leaders in the battle for human rights. Since 1991, the Freedom Award has served as a symbol of the ongoing fight for human rights both in America and worldwide.

2018 AWARD WINNERS

Joe Biden

As a young man in then-segregated Wilmington, Delaware, Joe Biden was inspired to begin a life of public service by the leaders of the civil rights movement. Only a few years later, Biden became one of the youngest senators elected to U.S. Congress when he was elected to represent the state of Delaware at the age of 29. As a senator for 36 years, Biden was recognized for his work in criminal justice and international affairs. In 2008, he was elected Vice President, serving alongside President Barack Obama, where he continued to work to shape policies impacting the living standards of middle-class America, gun violence and violence against women. In 2017, President Obama awarded Biden the Presidential Medal of Freedom with distinction, calling him a “lion of American history” honored for “faith in his fellow American, for [his] love of country and a lifetime of service that will endure through the generations.” Since leaving the White House, Vice President Biden has continued to stay engaged in the issues that have always animated his career, including through the Biden Institute at the University of Delaware.

Other winners last year:

Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr.

J.R. “Pitt” Hyde III

Cory is going to be in a lot of hurt. He needs to focus on showcasing his plan and arguing why his plan is better for African Americans.

He literally has to be a salesman to persuade a Mercedes owner to buy a BMW. "Sir/Madam, you drive a fine car already, but here is why the BMW I am selling is better"

He's bright and talented, and I generally like him. But he's not Nation-wide. Not Like Biden, Not like Hillary. And Kamala, to me, is closer to that and has world-wide potential like Biden and Hillary already had/have.

This country needs a world class leader. I'm 60/40, Joe/Kamala. They're all I want. I also like Amy Klobuchar a lot.
