Tulsi Gabbard torches Karmala Harris

Did not watch debates but read about them and viewed video clips.

I am a California native and voting life long voting democratic party member. I voted for Harris as AG and as Senator but do not support Harris for POTUS and voted for her in the past only as she was the lead Democratic candidate,

Consider Gabbard a non-contender and perhaps a loose cannon fringe candidate but have to say Gabbard has presence and a quick mind. "Torched" is a good description of that debate interchange.

1. she used lie pushed by her right wing supporters to launch the attack you're so proud of

Politifact:

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii on Sen. Kamala Harris’ time as a prosecutor: Harris "put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana."

This claim about Harris putting "over 1,500 people in jail" for pot violations is cited in a February article by the Free Beacon, a conservative online news website. The article says "at least 1,560 people were sent to state prisons for marijuana-related offenses between 2011 and 2016," when Harris was California attorney general. It says the data comes from reports from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

PolitiFact could not immediately access that data during the debate. But we do know that as attorney general, Harris would not have personally prosecuted marijuana cases. Those cases would have been handled by lower-level state attorneys.

3. Who said was proud of the attack on Harris?

I am not a supporter of Gabbard but also do not support Harris.

Interested to hear about just who are the money and power supporters behind Gabbard. Please elaborate.

I consider Gabbard a fringe candidate and cannot see a path to where she would have my support.

That said Gabbard has presence and comes off as intelligent and quick minded.

4. California didn't legalize weed for recreation until 2018

Marijuana Legalization Goes into Effect in 2018

After the approval of the Marijuana Act in 2016, weed will be legal in the state of California starting Jan. 1, 2018.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Timeline-Marijuana-Legalization-in-California-464268753.html%3famp=y

If it wasn’t legal until 2018, attacking Harris for following state law between 2011 and 2016 is utter nonsense.

5. OP was the title of the clip, not my words.

If you read the article provided by BigTree, Gabbard did not "lie" but interpreted data in a way unfavorable to Harris. Of course Harris did not personally prosecute 1500 plus marijuana convictions but as AG was the ultimate California LE officer during their prosecution and conviction.

My right to not support Harris and have a low opinion of her (not specifically because of pot).

Did not post the clip because I support Gabbard (at all) but because there has been discussion about the debate interchange, I did not see a video clip on DU, searched the internet, and posted the clip to DU.

DU (including myself) is disappointed by the outcome of the process and to a lesser degree by the findings of the report and by the willingness of Mueller to be forceful in his conclusion in damning Trump and the GOP enablers. The result is much the product of AG Barr and how the report and process has been handled by media. But if one goes back much hope was held at DU as to the expected Mueller outcome. I expected to be disappointed and experience something similar to Fitzmas. The impact of the Mueller Report is hopefully still gaining momentum.

Interesting DU response to my posting the video clip for those (like myself) did not watch the debate itself but have interest in what occurred.

13. Harris did directly prosecute marijuana cases as San Francisco district attorney from 2004-2010

According to Mercury News: https://www.mercurynews.com/2019/08/01/democratic-debate-kamala-harris-tulsi-gabbard-joe-biden-fact-check/

This especially turns my stomach:

Death row appeals

Tulsi Gabbard: “She blocked evidence that would have freed an innocent man from death row until the courts forced her to do so. In the case of those who were on death row, innocent people, you actually blocked evidence from being revealed that would have freed them until you were forced to do so.”

The facts: Harris’s attorney general office did block DNA testing that some legal observers believe could have helped overturn the murder conviction of a death row inmate who has insisted he was framed.

Harris opposed efforts by lawyers for Kevin Cooper, a death row inmate from San Bernardino County, to get new DNA testing. In 2018, following a New York Times investigation into the case, Harris said she was wrong and called for further testing.

No wonder Harris wants to only talk about Trump all of a sudden!

Gabbard was also correct that Harris "fought to keep a cash bail system in place that impacts poor people in the worst kind of way.”

18. What would primary voters think if they knew "she also worked against laws that would punish cops"?

Harris' history needs serious vetting. Did you know about this?

"Clergy Abuse Survivors Question Kamala Harris’ Record"

'Harris never responded to him when he wrote to tell her that a priest who had molested him was still in ministry at a local Catholic cathedral. And, he says, she didn’t reply five years later when he wrote again, urging her to release records on accused clergy to help other alleged victims who were filing lawsuits.

“She did nothing,” said Piscitelli, today the Northern California spokesman for SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. Survivors of clergy abuse and their attorneys say that Harris’ record on fighting sex abuse within the Catholic Church is relevant as the U.S. senator from California campaigns for the presidency... They complain that Harris was consistently silent on the Catholic Church’s abuse scandal — first as district attorney in San Francisco and later as California’s attorney general.

Catholics make up large voting blocs in the city and the state, accounting for roughly a quarter of the population in both San Francisco’s metro area and across California.

“There’s a potential political risk if you move aggressively against the church,” said Michael Meadows, a Bay Area attorney who has represented clergy abuse victims. “I just don’t think she was willing to take it.'

https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2019/06/26/clergy-abuse-survivors-question-sen-kamala-harris-record/

Is this Harris' idea of social justice? Harris needs to explain to voters why she made these decisions and why. Since she portrays herself as a tough prosecutor, it is relevant to know about Harris' history as DA and AG.
