Well, we haven't blown it yet, but he's right that we do need to capitalize on Trump fatigue.
Mediaite article with full video of that segment of Maher's show:
https://www.mediaite.com/tv/maher-democrats-can-win-by-looking-less-crazy-than-trump-and-theyre-blowing-it/
Maher recapped the most insane Trump news from the past month and brought up how a majority of Americans are tired of Trumps tweeting and unpresidential behavior.
And right now, he continued, Trump fatigue is the best thing Democrats have going for them, because Americans are tired of looking at his fat fucking face.
He argued that moderates who have Trump fatigue will gladly vote for normalcy, but they wont trade it away for left-wing extremism.

And, since he referred to "Old Town Road"...

Me. is absolutely correct. It's not the nature of scorpions to be our friends. That's sadly their main appeal to many of those they draw -- they claim high principles and goals but can be counted on to smear and sabotage the only party that has and can achieve them. Perverse and self destructive, so of course psychologists have studied them. They're a type.
One after describing many similarities between right and left wing variations went on to humorously describe an important difference this way: That those on the right hate everyone else, while those on the left hate themselves.
Maybe think about it.

(35,454 posts)But constantly criticizing the Dems won't get the job done, quite the opposite. Maher always seems to assume he's the smartest boy in the room and the Dems are clueless. He certainly didn't have a hand with the great win of 2018. I think the Dems are doing the best they can with overwhelming odds. I also think there are plenty of people around telling them what they should do, 24/7. I say to Mr. Maher, what I'd like to say to all of these pundits, smarties and know it alls, put your energy into taking on traitor trump and the Cons and, what they're doing to destroy this country.

Voters 18-24 won't be inspired to show up to vote just for a "return to normalcy".

Democrats should be demanding more answers, not fewer. Will Medicare-for-all cost key union votes in critical Midwestern states, as Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) argued during the debates? Does a free-tuition promise at state colleges and universities benefit middle- and upper-class families more than families in need? Is Warrens proposed tax on the assets of wealthy Americans likely to pass constitutional muster, and what strategies are billionaires likely to employ to avoid it? In light of those answers, will it really pay for all that she has promised?
Do Americans support decriminalizing illegal border crossings? Do Americans oppose lawful deportations? Do Americans agree that the federal government should guarantee a job for every person? Pragmatic questions such as these are highly relevant in a representative democracy, where politics is the art of the possible.
What I dont understand is why anybody goes to all the trouble of running for president of the United States simply to ignore questions about real-world realities and promise fights without explaining how to win them. Reality is not going to bend to a new shape come 2021 just because a President Sanders shouts at it or a President Warren fights with it.

(10,721 posts)It's sad what passes for "left wing extremism" in this country. Republicans have been so successful, over the last several decades, at moving the Overton Window (thanks in large part to a pathetic media but also thanks to Democrats failing to frame issues properly) that right wing insanity is more palatable than, say, universal health care or reducing CO2 emissions or gun control or reparations.
Therefore, we get equations that say Louie Gohmert = Elizabeth Warren or Steve King = Kamala Harris.
We do a disservice by contributing to this narrative.

(10,721 posts)Because "too far right" and "right wing extremist" are phrases that rarely get uttered by the media. Hell, even on DU, you're far more likely to read "too far left."
"Right wing extremist" is reserved for those who carry out acts of terrorism. But Elizabeth Warren is a "fringe leftist" or "left wing extremist." Medicare for All and consumer protection is made equivalent - nay, worse - than climate change denial and separating families and banning abortion rights.
Because, again, the Republican Party has successfully and drastically shifted the Overton Window over the last several decades.
