Contrast Trump's gaffes with Biden's misspeaks

Trump is a gaffe machine who ignores them as if they never were, Joe Biden misspeaks sometimes & apologizes or retracts, as is not abnormal; {a few trump gaffes edited out of links, deemed inappropriate}
Some outtakes from Mr Best Words Man:

{1} Donald Trump confuses Toledo with Dayton, fails to mention Gilroy in mass shooting remarks

{2} 'Democrats can’t find a Smocking Gun tying the Trump campaign to Russia'

{3} ‘.. Clemson Tigers last night at White House .. I served them massive amounts of Fast Food (I paid), over 1000 hamberders
-- to which shaun king remarked: “..Trump said he paid for 300 hamburgers. Now he says it was 1,000. He’s saying each player ate 16 burgers a piece. He lies so much that he’s literally lying about and misspelling the word hamburger.”

{4} ..his wife and father-in-law (who has the money?) off Scott Free. He lied for this..

{5} .. Mueller and .. Angry Democrat Thugs spent over 30 hours with the White House Councel,

{6} .. illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special “councel” appointed! (Twice from the best words man)

{7} Money from the campaign, or campaign contributions, played no roll in this transaction.

{8} official portrait: 'No dream is too big, no challenge is to great' - well he got the first 'too' right.

{10} twice proves not a typo, but a belief: Sometimes you need protest in order to heel, & we will heel, & be stronger than ever before! Fantastic! Trump uses Shoe Goo!

{11} (trump) got the idea about raking forest floors from talking to the president of Finland. They don't do that in Finland

3. Sadly both inspire critics

and invite the same questions about age related decline. NO ONE who has asked such questions about Trump has legitimacy in defending Biden.
I think Trump is mostly a jerk who has never been very informed of much outside of what interests and affects him directly. And worse - he simply does not care to be bothered with it. Like Barbara Bush and her beautiful mind. In itself, that should have disqualified him from the presidency and is much worse than any involuntary or organic cause. But more voters than I thought have low standards.
Biden should show better not comparable verbal acuity- or comparable anything for that matter. "But what about Trump" is a tiresome response and one I would hate to be an ongoing argument throughput 2020. I want a candidate who is beyond comparison.

4. two ways to compare transgressions

loyal sis: Sadly both inspire critics and invite the same questions about age related decline. NO ONE who has asked such questions about Trump has legitimacy in defending Biden.

There are two basic ways to compare violative transgressions, sis. First by severity of the offense. Second by relative frequency of the offense - when the relative frequency is of similar severity (1000 shopliftings does not match one murder).
That is the upshot of what I posted, or intended to convey.
Trump's errors, gaffes, malapropisms, racist remarks, cheap shots, malicious ad hominem attacks against just about anyone notable he deems as a threat to his self perceived greatness, FAR OUTWEIGH in relative frequency & severity by a couple orders of magnitude, all the errors gaffes malapropisms that joe biden has made. Note I omitted 'cheap shots, malicious ad hominem, & racist remarks' from joe's list, since I do not believe Joe has made any truly serious of note, at least not as a political figure or in public, and none that he has not apologized for.

So I disagree with your remark that I have no legitimacy in defending Joe Biden by criticizing trump's bigotry.

sis: "But what about Trump" is a tiresome response and one I would hate to be an ongoing argument throughput 2020. I want a candidate who is beyond comparison.

Best get used to it; dems should never let trump's past ugly remarks go forgotten due to your concern above.
When you find a candidate who 'is beyond comparison', ms diogenes, let us know.

sis: .. Biden should show better not comparable verbal acuity- or comparable anything for that matter

Joe does demonstrate better verbal acuity & speaking ability on a daily basis, haven't you been listening? You cannot possibly be saying that Trump's fractured bombastic rhetoric is equivalent to Joe's sound speaking ability. Trump would raise HIS esteem if HE could improve comparably to Joe Biden. Right now it's like a knucklehead vs a gifted orator.
To take occasional Joe Biden bloopers and equate them with trump's intentional malicious speech and relative ignorance in english grammar & vocabulary, is an unprofessional way of looking at their dichotomy.

sis: I think Trump is mostly a jerk who has never been very informed of much outside of what interests and affects him directly. And worse - he simply does not care to be bothered with it. In itself, that should have disqualified him from the presidency and is much worse than any involuntary or organic cause. But more voters than I thought have low standards.

Concur. How did you get from these thoughts, to what you posted alongside them?

PS: I really admire & like elizabeth warren. Bernie also, but had his shot.

5. Opinion: There are more important things to worry about than Biden's gaffes

My response to both was the same, as it was when I was asked about the Biden issue on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports.” There is a racist sitting in the Oval Office implementing a white supremacist policy agenda. So, you focus on Biden’s mouth marbles, and I’ll keep my eyes on the prize. The prize being the eviction of Trump from the White House.

As Waldman also wrote, Trump “is waging a reelection campaign based on racism and fear,” not to mention being “the most prolific liar in American political history (he just passed 12,000 false or misleading claims).” And what makes the focus on Biden’s mouth extra aggravating is how it wipes our memories of the moronic things said by this president, as my follower @absolut_irish was so kind to remind Biden’s critics.

Some of these are funny. Some are worthy of a cocked eyebrow. But they are not nearly as consequential as the racist and white supremacist beliefs parroted by Trump and the right-wing echo chamber that found their way into the manifesto of the suspect in the El Paso mass shooting, who told police his target was "Mexicans.” The atmosphere of menace and danger is now indisputable. Your time would be better spent worrying about the shredding of our values, ideals and the rule of law than the flubs of a particular candidate who would put an end to this shameful chapter.

6. telescoping

Good post Goth, agree completely both you and evan;

Joe Biden: Said he met with Parkland kids while he was VP (Parkland happened 2 years after he left office)

This is known as 'telescoping' (iirc), where events from the past are usually remembered & slightly displaced closer to current time, than when they actually happened (or a different time).
Can & does happen to normal people as we age, usually subconsciously, sometimes intentionally.

Joe Biden: - Said: “Poor kids are just as bright, just as talented, as white kids.”

Unfortunate slip. Vice President Biden misspoke and immediately corrected himself

Joe: - Said: “We choose truth over facts.

Obvious he misspoke.
There are two ways to compare transgressions & other serious matters. First by severity of transgression, second by relative frequency of transgressions of similar severity.
Both by worst severity & higher relative frequency of transgressions, Trump wins.

9. What about trump's gaffes?

Biden's so-called gaffes will not be an issue in the general election https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/meet-the-press/democrats-battle-each-other-trump-s-greatest-ally-time-n1042191#anchor-Whatabouthisgaffes

But if Biden’s gaffes were substantial news, why wasn’t there the same level of discussion on what President Trump said yesterday in Pennsylvania?

“That’s a lot of people back there for a — like an 11 o’clock speech. That’s a lot of people. (Laughter.) That’s a lot.” (In fact, the speech was after 2:00 pm ET.)

“This Shell petrochemical plant in Beaver County, Pennsylvania — I did very well here. We did very well. How many points did we win by? Does anybody know? I'll tell you. Isn't it, I think, 28 points?
That's a lot.” (Trump won Beaver County by 19 points in 2016.)

“I got sued on a thing called ‘emoluments.’ Emoluments. You ever hear the word? Nobody ever heard of it before. They went back. Now, nobody looks at Obama getting $60 million for a book.” (Obama signed his book deal in 2017, after leaving office.)

Trump’s two and a half years in office definitely have changed the political and media world.

Shouldn’t they also change how we cover gaffes and misstatements?

14. Josh Marshall at TPM put this whole argument into perspective

Any comparison between Trump and Biden is false equivalency. Why?

Donald Trump is a degenerate, malicious liar.

There is no comparison between misspeaks and deliberate serial lying, something Trump has been doing from the start, +12,000x.

Case closed. Comparisons rendered useless.
