Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWill our VP pick be someone that's running for President now?
History says no. Let's see some recent races:
2016: Clinton picked Tim Kaine and Trump picked Mike Pence. Both not running that year.
2012: Romney picked Paul Ryan. Not running.
2008: Obama picked Joe Biden and McCain picked Sarah Palin. Biden was running that year.
2004: Kerry picked John Edwards. He was running that year.
2000: Bush picked Dick Cheney and Gore picked Joe Liberman. Both not running.
1996: Dole picked Jack Kemp. Not running (although he did in in 1988, but I'm counting same election only).
1992: Clinton picks Al Gore. Not running (he did in 1988).
1988: Dukakis picks Lloyd Bentsen. Not running (although he did in 1976)
1984: Mondale picks Geraldine Ferraro. Not running.
So in the past 35 years, between both Parties it's happened only twice and back to back by us, in 2004 and 2008. Will it happen again in 2020?

(14,725 posts)Much less the vp. But I do think there will be one of the female candidates picked if the Dem candidate is a male.

(115,656 posts)choosing a senator would mean an open senate seat, which might be vulnerable. My dream scenario is that somehow Amy Klobuchar gets picked or she is later appointed AG, which means the governor could appoint Al Franken to her vacant position, but that's all kind of unlikely. It all depends on who can add the most to the ticket and is best qualified to take over the presidency if that became necessary. Many of the presidential candidates could qualify, but there are others out there who could as well. Who knows? Hillary picked Tim Kaine (a choice I didn't agree with, but who cares what I think) because there wasn't a huge field of competing candidates - besides Bernie there was just Lincoln Chafee, Jim Webb, Lawrence Lessig and Martin O'Malley. O'Malley would have been better IMO, but it's hard to know whether a running mate can actually change an election.

I could see Biden / Warren fitting that mold. Two candidates with different constituencies that unite the party, add anergy, and aren't too radical.
I could also see Warren / Buttiegieg or Beto.
Or Biden / Harris...
I'm not seeing anyone else likely to win right now.
There will be a woman on the ticket.

(1,327 posts)made for picking from some of the current candidates.
Biden/Harris
Biden/Warren
--both strong tickets, balanced male/female, balanced moderate/liberal, takes into account a huge swath of voters so it's not just who won the overall nomination, but both sides of the party feeling like they got a seat at the table
-Warren or Biden / Buttigieg or Beto or Castro
--Advantage would be none of these guys currently hold a senate seat to give up. Disadvantage would be if it's Biden, having two dudes on the ticket.

(15,364 posts)If Sanders wins it, he'd likely pick Warren. However, if Warren wins it, I'm not so sure. Perhaps she pics Castro. Beto has too much baggage these days, otherwise he would have been a possibility.
