Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumCNN report on Sanders just now.
The campaign official wouldn't tell CNN if he was in the hospital or not. Wouldn't say which state he is in. A campaign person simply told them that he will be in the next debate. Says the campaign is being extremely quiet about the situation.
This is how it was just reported on CNN.

(42,862 posts)Doesn't sound very good. I think it's more serious than they're letting on.
With this much secrecy or "evasiveness"... it's certainly reasonable for people to wonder what's being hidden, or what they're avoiding talking about.
If there was truly "nothing to see here" then they'd be much more forthcoming and transparent.
All I'm saying is... I believe this is the end of his campaign. It remains to be seen if he'll even be healthy enough to return to simply being the Senator from Vermont.

If he had, they would have found the large blockage that required the two stents, and fixed him up before things got worse.

(42,862 posts)You're right. The Mayo Clinic describes A-fib symptoms as including the following. Looking at this list, it seems highly likely that his "slip and fall" could have been very likely precipitated by any of these things.
There's much more to this than the public is being told, I fear.
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/atrial-fibrillation/symptoms-causes/syc-20350624
Some people with atrial fibrillation have no symptoms and are unaware of their condition until it's discovered during a physical examination. Those who do have atrial fibrillation symptoms may experience signs and symptoms such as:
Palpitations, which are sensations of a racing, uncomfortable, irregular heartbeat or a flip-flopping in your chest
Weakness
Reduced ability to exercise
Fatigue
Lightheadedness
Dizziness
Shortness of breath
Chest pain

(4,035 posts)You very correctly guessed that his fall in the shower was probably a symptom of something more serious, and if I recall correctly, you even posted about heart disease and its symptoms. Too bad Senator Sanders and his staff weren't as prescient.
I hope the Senator heals well, but there's no denying this puts doubts to his ability to do the most demanding job in the world - at least it is when you take it seriously, unlike the one who stole the job in 2016. We can all agree that Senator Sanders would never blow off the duties of the office of President like Trump does. In fact, the Senator has admitted that he is a micro manager, and that no decisions are taken in his office that is not run by him first. That way of working would increase an already hugely demanding job by an order of magnitude, and if you have bad health...?

(2,061 posts)I know someone who had a heart attack had two stents put in very soon after arriving at the hospital. This many hours later the person was feeling great and was released from the hospital. It was amazing. I drove the person to the hospital and was deeply concerned they were not going to make it. 24 hrs later I was driving them home, they had energy, and they were extremely optimistic. They felt better than they had in years.
Shout out to doctors and the hospital. The persons primary care physician told me to drive to the second closest hospital to my location. Told me not to call an ambulance because an ambulance wouldn't bring her to a specific hospital. When I arrived at the hospital, there were two doctors and five nurses waiting out front. Literally out front in the drop off area. The team started assessing her while taking her out of the car. In the couple of minutes it took to get her into a special room they already had ekg and other tools attached to her. In under an hour she was in surgery. This was the most impressive teamwork I have ever seen. Everyone had a task that involved collecting data and providing it to the doctors or prepping her for surgery if it came to that, except for one person. One person was designated to talk to the patient. Keep her calm. Make sure she was understanding the doctors questions.
I went back to thank the head nurse and their team. They were amazing and difference makers.

(42,862 posts)That's not a prediction from me, mind you... that's just a reminder that these types of things are nothing to be trifled with and every case must be taken seriously.
I just think it's transparently laughable for anyone to try to characterize this as a simple "outpatient" procedure... when CLEARLY that's not the case.

(2,061 posts)It doesn't make sense to me. People literally saying it's no ones business when a 78 year old presidential candidate is rushed to the hospital with chest pains and is still out two days later.
I am so sorry about your loved one. Truly. I feel blessed that the person I was talking about is sitting in the office next to me and doing great five years after the procedure.

(7,412 posts)My husband has a big one in 1995 -had one stent put in.
A friend gave us the book 'Reversing Heart Disease" by Dean Ornish, MD. It saved our lives as we were so depressed - it gave us hope.
He was only 52, a daily runner, skinny etc but he did eat a pretty high fat diet in terms of dairy, sugar, meat, et al.
After he read the book he became a vegetarian, took up meditation - even became a Buddhist.
Now he's 77 still runs an hour every day in all types of weather, meditates and does yoga every day, also. - he feels great.

(7,447 posts)Sanders is always very cranky with the media and answering questions. This could simply just be that kind of "it's none of your business" thing he does with the media sometimes.
Or, it could be something more.
We will find out soon enough.
Having said that, the next debate is in 12 days. That's not much time to rest up particularly if he canceled several months worth of appearances, and to stand up for two plus hours doesn't seem wise two weeks away from a serious health/heart-related incident even if it wasn't a heart attack.
But we will see soon enough.

(2,061 posts)As I'm sure an overwhelming majority of people would disagree. We would like to know the condition of 78 year old candidate who was rushed to the hospital for chest pains. I want to know the health condition of all candidates. I get that you can look past a 78 year old candidate having a health emergency and then not sharing it. Few are going to see that as a sensible position.

(1,812 posts)A Vegas station is reporting he has been been released from hospital . It's premature to hint a nefarious coverup is going on .They are probably waiting for test results .If he has had a heart attack , he will likely drop out- and rightfully so ...FWIW : New Emerson College Poll from Ohio : Biden 29% Bernie 27% Warren 21% .. Both Bernie and Biden lead Trump in Ohio 53%-47% Warren leads Trump 52% - 48% ...That's a huge turnaround from 2016 ...Trump carried Ohio by 8%

(2,220 posts)just getting the blockages taken care of would help with that. I have friends who have had this done, and they swear theyre ready to run a marathon the next day. However, actual recovery usually takes longer. I wish Bernie all the best and a swift and complete recovery.

(16,728 posts)He has been living with Heart Disease since 1983, Triple Bypass in 1991. In 2018, he had stents put in a Vein Graft twice. They did not work. This year, he had that artery cleaned out in 3 different procedures that required overnight stays.
It sounds as though Bernie's condition might be worse due to the sheer stress of a campaign puts on the heart. If he has to drop out, it will be because of his health. At 78, Sanders risks more serious episodes.
Stents only work for so long. There is required Cardiac Rehab, dietary changes made, medications to take, required rest to reduce physical and mental stress.
I know this from personal experience. I live with it every day.

(4,915 posts)when you have blocked arteries (I know family members and friends who have had it) you are in the hospital for about 2 days. I'm guessing with Sanders, they just want to be sure everything is fine before releasing him. Typically in 5 days you can resume normal routine. Maybe they figure if they release him before 5 days - he will not relax and just do nothing. Also he is in Las Vegas and has to fly home to Vermont. Maybe if he were in hospital in Vermont he would be released but flying may make them more cautious.
You know someone who had a heart attack and was released the next day???? Wow. That sucks.

(4,915 posts)as well.
My comment says all the reports say he had blockage in his artery and had stents put in to open blockage. Unless everyone is lying and I certainly don't think they are - he has a very common procedure to alleviate blockage.
