Sanders and Warren put big donors on notice with massive hauls

The latest batch of fundraising reports released this week confirmed a new reality of presidential politics: the traditional, big-dollar model of funding a presidential campaign is going the way of landlines and the VCR.

With Elizabeth Warren’s announcement Friday that she had raised nearly $25 million in the last three months — slightly less than Bernie Sanders reported Tuesday — two candidates who didn’t hold traditional donor events became the top two fundraisers in Democratic primary.

And they both blew past the ones who did.

excerpt: (“The fact that progressives combined to raise $50 million without one fundraiser is mind-boggling,” said Rebecca Katz, a progressive consultant who advised Cynthia Nixon in her primary campaign against New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo last year. “And really exciting, because they showed there’s a better way to do this.”)

....that was soliciting up to the maximum $2800 when he had his heart attack. He also has a number of "big donors" who contribute hundreds of times so they can keep the "average donation" down yet still contribute the maximum of $2800. The most extreme (from FEC filings) is a woman in Michigan who has given 820 times since March totaling more than $2800 (a few dollars over the legal limit)

Here's the fundraiser promotion from Tuesday night:

...regardless of whether they bought a $27 or a $2,800 ticket.

But you’re right that it’s inaccurate to say Bernie doesn’t do fundraisers.

Needing to have a photo ID to get into a Sanders rally is alright, but requiring the same to vote for Sanders is voter suppression?

I hope that it one of them is our nominee, every individual donor to all of the campaigns donates as much as they possibly can in the GE so they don't need to go to big donors ever!

These are quarterly totals. They have raised much more.

Warren spends time taking selfies instead of cigar-and-cognac backrooms, and the country is better for it.
