Report: 'Look at My Record, Child,' Biden Tells Adult Climate Campaigner in Condescending Response

https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/10/28/look-my-record-child-biden-tells-adult-climate-campaigner-condescending-response?fbclid=IwAR109b5UyXkhnrm7b9d35zVUl7u2q-Dn3L5JhY71tI6hWrz5XXXGfCfYkJQ

"Biden needs to wrestle seriously with young people demanding real leadership," says Sunrise Movement co-founder, "and stop dismissing young women asking him legitimate questions as children."

byJessica Corbett, staff writer

Former Vice President Joe Biden came under fire from progressives Monday as video footage circulated online showing his condescending response to a young woman who questioned him about abandoning his opposition to super PACs in the face of a cash-strapped presidential campaign.

"Since you've reversed and are now taking super PAC money... how can we trust that you're not fighting for the people profiting off climate change?" Lily Levin, an 18-year-old volunteer with the Sunrise Movement, asked the Democratic front-runner at a Sunday night rally in Durham, North Carolina.

Interrupting her question, a visibly frustrated Biden replied, "Look at my record, child."

Extra credit would be to note that EVERY Democrat will work as hard as they can to deal with this issue -- and Trump/Pence won't.

PS I knew people who became strong advocates for candidates, including Kerry and Obama, after seeing them respectfully answer questions asked by young teens.

NO, it's NOT, Otterbein. It's exactly what we hate from the RW smear machines.

Of course, the more citizens know about candidates the harder it is to deceive by misrepresenting and lying about them. Knowledge always defeats smears and spins away from truth.

Instead of belittling the very idea of asking citizens to educate themselves, you could have pointed out that Biden, and other candidates with significant records, make that "please look at my record" request at least 50 times a day, double that if it includes working a long rope line.

And, you know, Biden is running for president. A condescending response to a college kid will throw cold water on a group we really, really need to get out to vote. If they show up this country will end up bright blue. So to say that - not good.

How would you feel if you were that kid?

That kid's parents?

That kid's friends?

And if we DO look at Biden's record, he's been on the wrong side of a couple of things. I'm not saying I won't support him if he ends up being the nominee, but I'm sure not supporting him in the primary.

136. A few things about that - first it's TWENTY SEVEN SECONDS, no indication of what happened before....
Tue Oct 29, 2019, 09:50 AM
Oct 2019

....or after that video of less than half a minute.

Second, she accused him of breaking the law - taking money from Super PACs, which he is NOT doing and never will. Not a surprise that she's from Sunrise Movement. I wonder if she was outside Dianne Feinstein's office when they ambushed her, too? They make a practice of doctoring and severely editing videos.

Third, he was walking through a crowd doing selfies, not answering questions. She interrupted and was rude to him. And "surprisinghly" they had a video rolling as they approached him, knowing they would be ambushing him. Excusable? HAH!

She's 18-years old, no telling how young she might have looked, I'm sure she didn't announce her age when she accosted him.

Funny how context might explain a person's actions, and justify them.

Remember that video Sunrise Movement put on twitter that made her look rude? It turns out that the entire interchange was very polite and almost cordial when one saw the minutes before and after the highly edited video. Sunrise Movement seems to be good at that.

Are you equally appalled when other candidates do such things or much worse?

Oct 2019

I do concede your point about a 30 second video.

One of the things I've been saying for a while now is that whoever our nominee is, and certainly Democrats at all other levels - local, state and national - once elected, they will have to grapple with an increasingly large and diverse body of people who will have far less inhibition about creating pressure for changes they want.

For this, of course, Trump is partly responsible, because he has so coarsened the public dialog around politics, and he has also deliberately incited violence.

Secondly, we can look to social media. There are stories of kids committing suicide because they've been bullied, but for the most part these kids and young millennial adults have pretty thick skins and tell it like they see it.

And last, I don't know if you saw that excerpt I posted about the tipping point of public sentiment around climate change - with 40% of Americans now believing it is a 'crisis,' and upwards of 80% believing it is human caused, and a full half saying we need action.

My point is that this type of thing isn't going to go away for Democrats - it is a fantasy for us to think that once we get rid of Trump, we'll go back to those genteel days when slow, steady progress was good enough. People are going to be increasingly militant because they know unless they are totally obnoxious, their voices will not be heard over all the dark money from lobbies, corporations and billionaire parasites.

Democrats throughout the nation will have to deal with that new militancy while at the same time fixing Trump's mess and rebuilding people's faith in the institutions Trump and his lawless minions have been systematically undermining.

I chuckle because I'm thinking about that scene in the old movie Ghostbusters, when they've been fired from the community college and as they are walking out, Bill Murray quips, "They want RESULTS out there!"

People are going to want results. Aggressive results. On climate change and healthcare. And a variety of other things.

primary today, I would vote for:

...and President will have to address. And although it they may not be as detailed or "correct" as some would want, ALL of our candidates are addressing climate change in one manner or another. There are good policies, policies not as good, and some that need more explaining.

But the thrust of this thread and the outrage that is being expressed, sadly, is because Joe Biden, a 76 year old man, should be castigated for DARING to call a teenager (did he know she was older than 17-years old) a "child"! Look at all of the responses, especially the one I responded to:

How can anyone possibly excuse Joe's condescending comment to an adult female?

It's ludicrous. They're not commenting on Biden's climate change policy or whether it's good enough for them or not, they're commenting on a SINGLE WORD in a 27-second video lifted out of obviously a longer video, without knowing the entire context of the encounter and Biden's response before or after he said that.

They're also bashing Biden from here to Kingdom Come but totally ignoring the fact that the person he was responding to had just accused him of violating Federal Campaign Finance law by, as she put it by "taking Super PAC money" (which he isn't and cannot under the law) and being untrustworthy. Here is her EXACT statement from the article:

"Since you've reversed and are now taking super PAC money... how can we trust that you're not fighting for the people profiting off climate change?"

Her accusing him of violating the law and being untrustworthy is acceptable to many people here but calling her a child isn't? THAT is what raises the hair on the back of my neck.

It's truly sad that the discourse has devolved to this.

When I was an underage high school student my class went to D.C., and one of our teachers had lots of connections. But not one of the members of Congress or the Administration reacted with Biden's condescension -- or any kind of condescension.

See...cause we watched the Anita Hill testimony.

I think Biden's behavior here was rude and alienated a young person. That person will have that condescending answer burned into her mind from this moment on, and it will be one of the events that colors her view of the world.

And no, I'm not going off the deep end. She wasn't being 'traumatized' and didn't need a 'safe room' or a therapy dog or anything. But Biden was still rude. And she will remember. Let's hope she doesn't get alienated from being involved with Democrats. We have seen this alienation of young people and how it plays out at the ballot box

It really pissed me off when I saw it as I am dead in the middle of that Gen Z/Millennial cohort. I still think he is probably our best chance to beat Trump, along with Pete and Sen. Harris, but this has just sat and festered in my mind's eye for ages now. We are going to make up a large part of the voting bloc in the 2020 general. In fact, if you add in the Gen X'ers, we are larger (as actual voters) than all the rest of the age groups combined. The cold hard facts are Joe IS struggling with the younger voters, we ARE a huge voting bloc now, and this attitude is NOT a good look.

Gen Z, Millennials and Gen X outvoted older generations in 2018 midterms

Biden Trashes Millennials in His Quest to Become Even Less Likable

"Give me a break," he said of young people who "think they have it tough."

https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/mbpxx8/biden-trashes-millennials-in-his-quest-to-become-even-less-likable

In an apparent effort to make himself an even less appealing 2020 contender, former Vice President Joe Biden had some harsh words for millennials while promoting his new book on Wednesday. Here's what he said in a conversation with Patt Morrison of the LA Times:

"The younger generation now tells me how tough things are. Give me a break. No, no, I have no empathy for it. Give me a break. Because here’s the deal guys, we decided we were gonna change the world. And we did. We did. We finished the civil rights movement in the first stage. The women’s movement came to be. So my message is, get involved. There’s no place to hide. You can go and you can make all the money in the world, but you can't build a wall high enough to keep the pollution out. You can't live where—you can't not be diminished when your sister can't marry the man or woman, or the woman she loves. You can't—when you have a good friend being profiled, you can't escape this stuff. And so, there's an old expression my philosophy professor would always use from Plato, 'The penalty people face for not being involved in politics is being governed by people worse than themselves.' It's wide open. Go out and change it."

Let's take this line by line.

The younger generation now tells me how tough things are. Give me a break. I have no empathy for it. Give me a break.

A January 2017 analysis of Federal Reserve data found that millennials, who are better educated than baby boomers, have a median household income of $40,581, meaning they earn 20 percent less than boomers did when they were our age. We're crippled with student debt to the point where home ownership is a pipe dream. So here's the deal, Joe—I'll give you a break if you give me some money.

Here’s the deal guys, we decided we were gonna change the world. And we did.

Who is "we"?

We finished the civil rights movement in the first stage. The women’s movement came to be.

Not sure what this even means. It's good that there are activists fighting the worst sorts of injustices? Sure, that's good.

So my message is, get involved. There’s no place to hide.

Who is hiding? I am not hiding.

You can go and you can make all the money in the world, but you can't build a wall high enough to keep the pollution out.

Considering the stats I just dropped about millennials, I'd actually have a really hard time making all the money in the world.

snip

He should have addressed this long ago. I await his future forward actions to see if he does. It is a must, and if he doubles down and repeats this sentiment, it is going to have a deleterious effect on turnout, whether we like it or not.

121. It really pisses me off when politicians don't care to understand basic math
Tue Oct 29, 2019, 08:03 AM
Oct 2019

I have two Millennial children and I know their cost-of-living and economic security picture is totally different than what I faced 35 years ago, when things were just beginning to deteriorate. Make that exponentially different. Biden has repeatedly demonstrated a deep-seated indifference if not ignorance of what it means to be young in this age of rampant wealth and income inequality and all that does to distort the cost of housing in places where young people want (and need) to live and work, to take just one example. In the early 80s, I could still score a rent stabilized apt. in a good neighborhood in Manhattan for under $500 a month, split it two ways and live quite nicely on $20k/yr. coming out of college. That same apartment is now over $3k a month so if you’re not making six times what I made (and you’re not) good luck, especially if you happen to have a monthly loan payment of $300-$500 or much more hanging over your head.

The least politicians can do is acknowledge the difficulties young people face today and display some passion for addressing them. Scorn is both wrong and appalling. It’s also a one-way ticket to defeat because if this cohort isn’t motivated we’ll underperform with them and we’ll lose as a result.

They did the same to Dianne Feinstein back in February and when the entire video finally came out it wasn't nearly as bad as the short one posted on twitter, in fact it showed her to be very reasonable and polite.

YES, with the way she accosted him and accused him of violating campaign finance law, i.e., "taking money from Super PACs", it was okay for him to talk to her that way, in fact he was very restrained.

It's not wrong to report what he did, but it's wrong to not report EVERYTHING he did. Where's the rest of it? We'll never see that.

It deserves a respectful answer. Fairly simple matter.

And especially on this issue, being a "good, solid Democrat" does not help an 18-year old who, in 2050, will see food production and coastal cities in crisis due to global warming that she didn't cause.

If anyone in this picture deserves sternness, it's Biden, and the rest of us, for leaving this hot mess to future generations with no solution. To be petulant in an answer on the campaign trail helps no one. Why hand the Republicans a headline like this?

This young woman was of legal voting age, but even. if. she. were. not.... This is still not the appropriate mode of address.

And, btw, those minors who are 17... or even about 1/12 of those who are 16 at the moment -- they are going to be legal adults voting in the general election in 2020. Dismiss their question and call them "child" and see if they turn out to vote for you against the ancient orange menace... If one wants to lose the next general election, and get another 4 years of GOP rule which destroys our constitutional republic in favor of a perpetual (in our lifetime anyway) right wing authoritarian state, then by all means one should be condescending to potential voters. After all, being self-righteously indignant about someone questioning one's bona fides is a totally worth it trade-off.

95. I would like to hear your account of which candidates have spoken to 18-25 year olds' concerns
Tue Oct 29, 2019, 03:54 AM
Oct 2019

sufficiently to earn their votes, historically. Because I have not seen it in my lifetime. Their long-standing low voter turnout is a consequence of their concerns being ignored by the ruling class, just like the low voter turnout amongst lower income persons. When you and your concerns are dismissed, ignored, and cast aside, there is no reason to believe giving your vote will have any effect upon the actions of the person soliciting said vote once they are in office. What's the point of voting, one way or another, when this is how candidates treat you?

Voter turnout is 80% amongst people who make $150K/yr but 47% amongst those making <$10K/yr, or alternatively people making $50K or less are 48% of the population and 36% of voters while those making >$100K are 22% of the population and 30% of the voters. But there aren't a lot of posts on DU saying "who cares what this lower-income person thinks, those people don't vote" so why should that be acceptable as an attitude towards young adults? People who have been led to believe, by their own experience and observation, that they are going to get screwed no matter who they vote for have very little incentive to vote at all.

Asking candidates about money, the influence of money, conflicts of interests, and broken or abandoned pledges and positions is not only entirely legitimate but possibly the MOST germane issue of the primary campaign when one considers a general election opposition candidate potentially being Trump.

It does not matter how condescending and self-righteous the question was, what matters is did the answer encourage more people or fewer people to vote for the Democratic POTUS general election candidate and Democratic Senate candidates. The answer did not, but a better one might have.

What does "ignored" mean? How are they treated badly? Why would anyone think Democrats are as or more corrupt than Republicans? Where's the proof? Why is being flexible and changing one's mind bad -- sounds like "He believes the same thing Wednesday that he believed on Monday, no matter what happened on Tuesday." Why can't they tell Democrats from Republicans when not one Democrat voted for Trump's tax bill, when Democrats clearly are better for the economy and equal rights and in everything? Why do they not think their vote counts when elections are so close? Why is ignorance rewarded? Only way progressive legislation is achieved is a Democratic supermajority. Why blame Democrats for what Republicans do? I don't understand.

74. Joe seems to have a real problem with young people...
Tue Oct 29, 2019, 01:35 AM
Oct 2019

Now, to begin with, I'm almost as old as he is, so I can understand a degree of annoyance at the "young whippersnappers" who, at times, can project a self-righteous, holier-than-thou attitude toward the sins of their elders. (And I can also remember holding the exact same attitude when I was young, which is further proof that what goes around, comes around.)

But the point is, if you're running for public office, you need to sometimes block your own irritation, and take the question seriously enough to give it a serious answer.

I'm thinking of another case, a couple of months ago, where a young person asked him about what could be done about the economic plight millennials face, only to have him dismiss it with an irritated "Give me a break!" followed by a lecture about how millennials had it easy compared to his (and my) generation, who had to deal with Vietnam, racism, etc., and who, Biden implied, had managed to change the world for the better, unlike the young generation of today. Now, I must admit I get more than a little tired of the Boomer-bashing that seems a common refrain among the millennials and post-millennials, but anyone with the slightest bit of political judgment could have found a way to answer that question in a way that acknowledged that both his and the questioner's generations faced their own severe challenges, and suggest ways that his proposals could help out, instead of jumping to an irritated response that bore all the markings of "get the hell off my lawn."

Because that's the big problem. One may be annoyed by people, in or out of a particular demographic, but, if you're a politician seeking the highest job in the land, you have to sometimes swallow your irritation and try to build bonds. Because, a few more incidents like these, and you're going to see the same old familiar phenomenon of young people staying home on Election Day, because they sure aren't going to be guilt-tripped into pulling the lever for someone who seems to go out of his way to dismiss their concerns.

who I call "child" sometimes. But I've been known to call his teenage sister and their mother the same.

Truly sick of the nitpicking. Has anyone been paying attention to what has happening in the real world beyond the campaigns? The record is important. As far as the implication that the man is some sort of raging sexist, I don't see it in his life. The way he interacts with the women in his life bears witness to that. His record includes VAWA.

I think many men, including much younger ones, don't begin as fully fledged feminists. There are many societal pressures beyond the home to overcome. What I see is that Biden's parents raised a man to respect women. As with Obama, do you really believe that a woman like his wife would be with him were he not attentive and respectful of her ideas?

I'm not looking for axes to grind. We have someone in the WH who has multiple assault charges from women and is systematically shredding the laws that protect us and have been established on the road to personhood. This whatever is not a hill to die on.

After what the country has been through for the last two years

Yes, this was an 18 year old person, and adult, but there is no doubt were she is getting her marching orders from

You want to know who the Sunrise Group is? They are PAC. The same PAC that invaded Feinstein's office

"Together with Justice Democrats and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the group organized a sit-in in the office of Nancy Pelosi, which brought Sunrise its first significant press coverage.[3] Sunrise organized a similar event in February 2019, bringing a group of young people to confront Senator Dianne Feinstein in her office"

206. Good to see you Cha. When someone comes up to supposedly ask a question of someone, and

essentially start this question by falsely calling that person a liar, and then proceed to infer because of that he can’t be trusted, this person isn’t looking for an answer to a question

I have to wonder how much restraint people would show if they were falsely accused of being a liar

I sure wouldn’t

There was a lot of noise in that room. Maybe he misheard her name, or maybe she provided a different name prior to the footage shown in the clip.

Either way, the video has too much of an o'keefe feel for me. Desperate, grasping at straws, etc.

Last week, I'd wondered what form the Next Weekly Outrage would be.

Here it is. Pretense and outrage in one pretty, pre-holiday package, and further wrapped with the coloful ribbons of Real Concern.

I imagine the Next Weekly Outrage will be even more egregious. Maybe his usage of a spork while eating a salad. Or wearing a tan suit to a press conference.

The important thing is though, you maintain the allegation that this actually concerns you and looks bad for him. Breaking character at this point could be bad.

a Common Dreams article that starts out stilted against Biden. Did anyone notice the picture they lead with? Not his best.

And that over a "gotcha" question with no answer.

The adult/child was not asking a simple question, but was assuming he was accepting Super PAC money, even though he is not allowed to. Not a question at all, but an arguing point.

A setup, pure and simple. And Biden, in that crush, had every right to dismiss her, even if his language wasn't the best.

Anyway, a set up by those Sunshine people whose primary purpose seems to be to tell us nobody is good enough.

Gotcha questions/statements serve no purpose but to extend a propaganda point. In this case, that Joe Biden is somehow corrupt (accepting money which is untrue) or automatically compromised (false). Sending out an 18-year old to make the wave doesn't produce any points for those of us who know, up close and personal, what dealing with teenagers is all about. I, too, was a teenager once and expected the world to operate by my own idealistic standards, no exceptions.

Thought Joe Biden was restrained and on the mark. "Check my record, child.'

Good advice!

Btw, faux outrage is wearisome and counterproductive.
