From way back in the day when women had no value and were treated as chattel... property of men... basing their own worth and self esteem on whether another man recognized them. Oh, I know what I'm talking about... I grew up in part of that era. All I'm saying is that I just find it terribly sad that in this day and age, she feels that way (or recently felt that way).

If her statement was heartfelt and truthful, then that's truly sad. If it was a cynical ploy to flatter BS with meaningless platitudes, then it's disturbing. And, as I said elsewhere, the fact that BS didn't also see it as being disturbing (and that he saw it as a flattering statement) really reveals much. And, trust me on this, it's not as flattering as he seems to think it is.

If I were to vote in a presidential

It's bad enough that she feels that way in this day and age... BUT... I think it's even worse that BS chose that particular sentiment as something that he wants to tweet about and promote.

The fact that he sees nothing wrong with it is a strong indicator of how he views himself, and perhaps even, how he views women in general.

All I'm trying to say is, there are probably a half-dozen of other things she's said that would ACTUALLY be flattering (and inspirational) but he chose THAT? I'm sorry, that's just wrong. And sad.

People may have varying opinions, and that one is mine.

Thu Oct 31, 2019, 06:20 PM

Listen, sister... I lived that shit. My first husband's attitude was that "I'm nothing without him" and "I'm lucky that he'd even have me" and that I shouldn't even think about leaving because "nobody would have me" ... and if he hit me, then it's my fault and I should just watch what I say and do and talk to and smile at.

I tell ya, I know exactly what it's like to believe that my worth was tied to the opinion of a man... and even in fear, I was always seeking approval. Bruise after bruise broken bone after cut after black eye... he beat the shit out of me.

I escaped, I'm a survivor. But I know now that there are certain types of men who ACTIVELY SEEK OUT women with low self esteem... there are men whose EGOS depend on being able to control women the same way that I was controlled, and mentally and physically abused.

Never again! Generally speaking, I can spot abused women a mile away! I know them. I see them. I used to BE one of them. And even if they're not currently in an abusive or controlling situation, I know the type that soon will be. And I know the type of men that seek them out.

All I'm saying is that it's just sad when any woman needs a man (any man) to see her own value as a human being.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

... No kids with him, thankfully... so it was a "clean break" without any "ties that bind". He's now dead.

That's when my fear stopped. Even though he lived 500 miles away, twenty years later, I still feared answering the phone or opening the door... just because. When I heard he died... months after the fact... my fears vanished. The clouds parted and a weight had been lifted. I could BREATHE again! (It sounds stupid when I say it out loud, but that's the only way I can describe it. Even though we were apart, he still haunted me... I still feared him for YEARS!!!)

You are a survivor; more, you are a badass!
Thanks. I'm mostly just a foul-mouthed and opinionated. But I'll never again be a victim. I'll never again seek a sense of self-worth from any man.

Not only can I spot women who are abused (or likely to be) I can spot men who are likely to abuse them. It's like a protective "sixth sense". It's hard to describe, but I know it when I see it.

and I can only imagine the sense of relief, even after all those years.

No woman should be a victim. We need to teach our girls better.

True story (and much less serious): My SIL had a daughter after 2 sons. She was an absolute princess - always wanting to wear dresses, did dance classes for years, just a sparkly, bright princess.

One day, when my niece was about 8, my SIL asked her: is it better to be smart or pretty? Niece said, "pretty." SIL said to me, "I don't know how this happened, but I'm going to fix it.

Next year when we visited, niece's room had all kinds of posters about reading and science and math on the walls. She kept up with dance, but in HS, dropped it to play field hockey and lacrosse. She went to a technical college on academic and sports scholarships, got a great engineering job right out of college and just got her masters degree.

She's now 28. We just got the save the date card today for her wedding next year. She's a strong, smart, confident, and yes, very pretty, woman.

Bernie voted for CHIP.

Bernie did vote against part of the budget CHIP was attached to, because we had control of the WH, House AND Senate anyway. It was a performative vote to signal that it wasn't enough when Democrats had the chance to finally implement single payer and didn't.

I believed Hillary was just forced to concede ambitions of single payer because DC sucks all the up to her specifically coming out against it in 2016. I didn't even believe it until a little while after that, I really just didn't want to.

...it brought a tear to my eye...seriously

...now tell me Bernie and AOC aren't our hope for a bright future?

...if there's a God, if there's justice, if there is a future, Bernie with AOC will be in the White House working for us come January 2021...

...feel it, believe it and don't let people fool you...

...we can do it...

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

This stuff sounds just as ludicrous as when Robertson or Graham says it.

Not a statement of absolute truth.

Mrs. Obama's statement was in the context of her husband's victory. It was not meant as an absolute that she had never proud to be an American or never proud of America.
But the Obama's political enemies were able to take that interpretation and run with it.

Is that not the case?

Your claim is that AOC meant that she had never had a sense of self worth ever before in her life. Is that a reasonable recap of your position?

Trying to equate

"for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback"

with

"It wasn’t until I heard of a man by the name of Bernie Sanders that I began to question and assert and recognize my inherent value as a human being."

is what is "really reaching".

Michelle O being really proud of her country and her HUSBAND is way different a young lady attributing her value to Bernie Sanders who is not her husband. Though it would be bad even if he was.
