Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez to hold climate summit in Iowa

Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) are slated to hold rallies and a summit in Iowa next week focused on climate change.

The two progressives will hold climate change rallies in Council Bluffs and Coralville next Friday and Saturday nights and a summit in Des Moines on Saturday afternoon, Sanders’s campaign announced.

(snip)

Both lawmakers have been vocal proponents of the Green New Deal, an expansive legislative package to tackle climate change. The issue has emerged as a chief policy focus for several of the 2020 Democratic contenders.

(snip)

"It wasn’t until I heard of a man by the name of Bernie Sanders that I began to question and assert and recognize my inherent value as a human being that deserves health care, housing, education and a living wage,” Ocasio-Cortez said during a rally with Sanders in the New York last month that was attended by more than 25,000 people.

....when the Twin Towers went down, MANY New Yorkers lost not only their television access (the NYC channels all had their transmission antennas on the North tower) but their telephone access too. Newspaper reporting and printing was dramatically limited, too. Television and newspapers do not substitute for face-to-face contact.

can and do get their information regarding their congressperson's speeches from any number of modern communication devices, T.V. Internet, newspapers, radio even in poor districts.

For that matter people that are poor and live in highly populated districts as in the Bronx and Queens are more likely to work 2-3 jobs just to make ends meet, you know living paycheck to paycheck and so attending speeches in person can be more difficult, but that's how ludicrous your argument is.

The 14th District is 49% Hispanic, and per capita income is only $27,000, way below the NYC average and even below the US average.

Very few have the resources to access the internet and many aren't fluent in English. Many of them don't have "modern communication devices". Campaign speeches in Iowa aren't normally broadcast in Spanish in NYC on any medium.

Telemundo (Spanish pronunciation: [teleˈmundo] (About this soundlisten); formerly NetSpan) is an American Spanish-language terrestrial television network owned by Comcast through NBCUniversal. It is the second-largest provider of Spanish-language content nationally behind American competitor Univision, with programming syndicated worldwide to more than 100 countries in over 35 languages.

The channel broadcasts programs and original content aimed at Latin American audiences in the United States and worldwide, consisting of telenovelas, sports, reality television, news programming and films — either imported or Spanish-dubbed. In addition, Telemundo operates NBC Universo, a separate channel directed towards young Hispanic audiences;[1] Telemundo Digital Media, which distributes original programming content across mass media, the Telemundo and NBC Universo websites; Puerto Rico free-to-air station WKAQ-TV; and international distribution arm Telemundo Internacional.

(snip)

In 1984, the owners of WNJU (channel 47) in Linden, New Jersey (serving the New York City area) and KSTS (channel 48) in San Jose, California formed NetSpan, the second Spanish-language television network in the continental United States (behind the longer-established Spanish International Network, the forerunner to Univision). These stations joined KVEA (channel 52) in Los Angeles, run by its general manager and part-owner Joe Wallach, in 1985.[6] The following year, KVEA's part-owner, Reliance Group Holdings, acquired the Telemundo brand when it purchased John Blair & Co., which also owned WSCV (channel 51) in Fort Lauderdale–Miami-West Palm Beach in addition to WKAQ-TV. In late 1986, Reliance also purchased WNJU.

In 1987, Reliance Capital Group executives Saul Steinberg and Henry Silverman merged all these stations into the Telemundo Group.[7] The new corporation quickly went public, and in 1987, Reliance decided to rebrand NetSpan as Telemundo. Later that year, it purchased additional stations in San Francisco, Houston (KTMD, channel 47) and San Antonio (KVDA, channel 60).

Although originally meant to describe a meeting between the heads of state, summit can be used to describe any gathering of people who care deeply about the same topic. If, for example, you are the captain of your chess club, you might attend the upcoming Chess Club Summit, at which new rules of the tournament will be discussed. Moreover, while summit also means the very top of a mountain, summit can be used metaphorically to mean a variety of heights, such as the summit of a career, an industry, or any kind of major effort.
