Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumJust a reminder .. remember how President Obama had to almost blow up his
Presidency to get the Affordable Care Act passed, with a full congress.. Just think on that for a second, before we go off the deep end with trying to completely rewrite health care again. We actually have a framework now that we can rebuild once the current resident has been removed from his squatting in the White House..

(10,826 posts)I mentioned this in another post reply, something I tripped over last night. It's a detail from Warren I hadn't read or heard before.
The senator also said that in coming weeks she will roll out a transition plan, adding, Of course, moving to this kind of system will not be easy and will not happen overnight.
Which, of course, is what we've all been saying from the start: not easy, will not happen overnight.
For the life of me, I don't understand why Warren would wait to reveal this, beyond trying to straddle the fence on the whole damn issue. However, this is a far more pragmatic detail, not that far removed from what all our candidates have been saying about pushing for the public option first, offering a transition which would be a huge leap in and of itself towards universal healthcare.
So, I'll be waiting to see what this 'transition' actually is. Because honestly? The insistence to push for the Medicare 4 All package is like cutting our throats before 2020. It's a clear loser. And without an undisputed win in 2020, none of us will have healthcare. Or anything else, for that matter.

instead of going all in on Medicare for All. No way with Medicare for all with it's alleged 30 trillion buck price tag and loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs is a vote getter.
In other words, if we're the party campaigning on MFA with those figures it will cost, it's like presenting a win in the 2020 election to trump and the repugs on a platter.

(11,285 posts)If there's a "transition" feature to the plan .. it's kind of a critical piece of the pie. One could say, "deal breaker."
Why is it not out there front and center?

(10,826 posts)And was surprised to read about a transition plan after all this back and forth and insistence that Bernie's M4A is the only way to go.
I don't get it. I would have thought the transition info would have come first or simultaneously with yesterday's announcement, unless she felt the howl from the Left would deafen everyone to the plan itself.
A mystery.

(31,261 posts)But I think that she has really painted herself in a corner with her full scale embrace of MFA with no other alternative. She may have just insured that Biden, Buttigieg, Harris or Klobuchar end up as the party nominee.
I honestly thought that her and her advisors were more politically skilled than what they have shown in the last month.

(31,261 posts)been exposed to the ACA for ten plus years and actually punished republicans for trying to get rid of the ACA. I think the Public Option will get a lot more support from Americans if a plan that is well thought out is presented.
MFA is actually the proposal that is where the Public Option was ten plus years ago, a mysterious plan that Americans have no benchmark to measure against. We can talk about public healthcare in other developed nations, but not a single one of those nations have the massive population that we have and a population with a very wide range of health needs.

(5,303 posts)It isn't perfect but it's the best we could do at the time and it was a major improvement from what we had before. I don't support MFA because we don't have to re- invent the wheel to improve our health system. Going full liberal and pushing for MFA all at once will cost us votes in a general election. The general public is wary of drastic change especially when republicans can scare them and lie about us taking away their health insurance policies that they currently enjoy.
I'm in full support with building on the progress we've already made. Assuming we win big next November we can restore ACA from the damage trump has done to it and build upon it. Implementing gradual changes is more palatable for the general public and will give us the equivalent of MFA faster than if we run on full MFA and lose the election because of it.

(53,758 posts)Building on what's already in place won't scare voters.
When repugs can say MFA will cost $30,000,000,000 and will cut 200,000 jobs, we will lose.
It was a mistep by Warren not to come out with the transition plan first. If she's doing it now it must be from the negative pushback on the 30 trillion dollar MFA.
We need to beat trump so we have to go with what's winnable or we lose our democracy. If trump wins even though he was impeached he will effectively be a dictator who can do anything he wants because he knows impeachment means nothing.
