Elizabeth Warren's Days Defending Big Corporations

Elizabeth Warren had never taken on the federal government before.

But in 1995, she found herself up against the Clinton administration, representing the Cleveland-based conglomerate LTV Steel.

-snip-

The LTV case was part of a considerable body of legal work that Ms. Warren, one of the nation’s leading bankruptcy experts, took on while working as a law professor — moonlighting that earned her hundreds of thousands of dollars over roughly two decades beginning in the late 1980s, mostly while she was on the faculty at Harvard. Much of it involved representing big corporate clients.

-snip-

Against that backdrop, some of Ms. Warren’s critics have seized upon her bankruptcy work for LTV and other big corporations to question the depth of her progressive bona fides. How, they wonder, could someone whose reputation is built on consumer advocacy have represented a company seeking to avoid paying for retired miners’ health care?

and then decided to follow or discover her own principles instead of being a hired hand. No advocate is better than one who served the other side. I believe the story of Paul in the bible is the an extreme archetype-- he actually goes from persecuting Christians to proselytizing.

Most will be a lot more damning then this. I could mention Biden's record in regards to banking, for example. You could find many more damning examples in his record, as well as those of other candidates. Your concern is noted.

Starting with WaPo in the summer. Guess we’re due for another CFPB “how Warren was a meanie to those who opposed her” piece too. All these things do is make her more formidable to those who have an open mind because, if anything, she has under-stated her biography in the campaign.

be courting them and doing everything she can to ensure their success.

But, when it comes down to it, she'll cave to corporate lobbyists just like she did the medical device manufacturers in Massachusetts. The medical device tax was an important -- though small -- funding source for the ACA, promoting the principle that those who profit from healthcare should help pay for it. But, Sen Warren quickly opposed the tax because medical devices are big in Massachusetts.

...thing.

What we need more than anything in a world dominated by inflexible dogma is a person who can see - and even has been - on two sides of an issue.

I am, by the way, an adamant opponent of her stated energy policy, while regarding energy and the environment, especially climate change, as the most important issue before humanity, whether the majority of us agree or not.

Nevertheless, I support her, because with her, facts matter, and the facts are clear.

Representing the interests of her client.
But the sums you can earn for these large corporations seem extraordinary. 90000 for two expert opinions sound insane unless that involved a workload of months with staff.
But generally, the article isn't really much of an issue.

she participated in a study of people that filed for personal bankruptcy. She openly admits that when she agreed to do the study with two other experts, she went in expecting to find a lot of deadbeats that were trying to scam the system. The study totally changed her as a person, changed her into the champion of everyday Americans that she is now.

She hasn't, for example, sponsored legislation to make it harder for people to declare bankruptcy, as some other Dems have done.
