So why did Trump go all out to get dirt on Biden? Why not BS or Warren?

I think it’s pretty obvious. His fondest wish would be to run against either of them. He knows he can win. His attack lines will practically write themselves. Biden, not so much. We have to fast forward to the general and put aside our pipe dreams. We’re not going to get free college or Medicare for all. In fact the thing that will prevent this country from enacting the agenda so many of us want is racism. Some white people can be counted on to vote against their own self interest cuz “welfare queen” and “Mexicans” might get their “tax money”. Time to wake up folks...you won’t get your unicorn riding over the rainbow, but we might be able to hold on to our democracy, but sad to say we won’t get both.. For the record, if I could wave my magic wand I’d love to see a President Warren, but it ain’t gonna happen. No time for games folks.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Putin helps Trump again, the attack on the 2016 election can be blamed on Ukraine, sanctions eased on Russia, defense money withheld from Ukraine so Russia can keep moving on Ukraine. Putin continues his happy.

Perhaps we should all ask Putin how to proceed toward the next election. He and his operatives seem to be really good at messing with democracies.

Mon Nov 4, 2019, 08:23 PM
Nov 2019

Biden was a "retired" VP and was starting on the speaker's tour and his son's activities were making the rounds. When Biden threw his hat in the Ring, it was too tempting for Trump to not get info from the source. I am not saying the Orange Menace was correct, but I think in his demented mind he was perfectly fine asking foreign governments for "dirt."

Naturally he has never bothered to read the constitution or listen to his horrified staff when the deed was done. In their attempt to hide the truth from the public, his staff tried damage control. And here we are...fortunately, we have brave and patriotic Americans who put country first before party or individuals.

might go to POCs, as if POCs don't pay taxes too.

One thing though, I still think MFA can be achieved over time by building on the very popular and already-in-place ACA. IMO Warren made a critical mistake by going all-in on Medicare for all. Now she's walking that back with a transition plan because of the pushback she got on how to pay for it and the alleged job losses.

Most progressive Dems want single-payer healthcare but those of us with a clear history of how things get done in this country know big, huge, monumental change doesn't happen overnight from one candidate from the left or right promising to implement it.

So even if someone else wins the primary, if the POS POTUS could pin whatever concocted nonsense on Biden, he and his necromancers believe they would be pulling down the opposition's statue of Obama. 11. I don't think Trump's possible calculation should drive our decision
Sun Nov 3, 2019, 12:41 PM
Nov 2019

I understand the argument here but it is pure speculation regarding Trump's motives. Even if Trump prefers to run against Biden rather than Sanders or Warren that doesn't mean that Biden is the best candidate to beat Trump. Trump could actually be mistaken (imagine that!).

My own calculation is that we win this election through turnout. I see much more enthusiasm and motivation in our left wing. I honestly cannot see what is supposed to excite me about voting for Biden over any of the top-tier/middle-tier candidates beyond a fuzzy nostalgia for the Obama years.

I'm not swayed by polling a year of the head of the election that shows Biden doing better against Trump than other Dems. There's a long campaign ahead. The only poll that matters is in November of next year. To give a sense of why (and this is just the first poll from my Google search of November 2015 poll results) here is an alternate history of the last election:

One year before Election Day 2016, Dr. Ben Carson is virtually tied with Donald Trump as strong front-runners for the Republican nomination, and Carson tops former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton 50 - 40 percent in the final face-off, according to a Quinnipiac University National poll released today.

I also find the "unicorn riding over the rainbow" line pretty insulting. I'm pragmatic enough to realize that, for instance, neither Sanders nor Warren will be able to implement the policies they are campaigning on by the stroke of a pen. (And based on what we've seen with Obamacare, a program whose roots lie in right-wing politics, there's a huge chance that significant reforms will be bottled up for years in the courts Trump is packing, even if we somehow win the Senate and Presidency.) There are certainly Warren and Sanders supporters with a poor understanding of how hard it is to make big transformations, but many of us are realists.

Social policies. Until very recently many of those countries were pretty homogeneous. So everyone was basically part of the same “tribe”. No one was concerned about “them” getting their stuff. As for racists, there are plenty of dems in the rust belt (and elsewhere) who hate blacks and Hispanics, I assure you. I’m a black woman who grew up in Ohio. Trump was flirting with a third party run, but set it aside.

Jeb was the frontrunner, the favorite, so trump started with him. Other candidates tried to stay out of his way, but once trump was finished with Jeb, he moved onto them.

39. Trump is guessing that Biden would win in a landslide against him
Sun Nov 3, 2019, 02:10 PM

I think Trump for once is probably correct. I do think most of the other Democratic candidates would also beat Trump, but the election would be closer. I personally like the idea of having someone like Warren get in, because she should push the political consensus leftwards, especially regarding economic, pro-government regulation-based liberalism which has been under attack since Reagan.

51. Unsupported Conclusion
Sun Nov 3, 2019, 04:17 PM

A candidate always tries to manipulate the list of opponents whereby knocking down the strongest and building up the weakest. But the conclusion seems to be that Trump is only looking for dirt on Biden. Let me assure you, he is also actively looking for dirt on Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren as well.

... of voters, and not just ourselves, in order to win by margins big enough (and in the critical places, too) to overwhelm the cheating tactics arrayed against us.

To just run the favorite candidate of progressive Democrats runs the risk of leaving voters split down the middle in the general election, easy enough for cheating to push towards the Republicans and be explained away, as always, as being within the margin of error.

This a fear of mine anyway, and I don't think it's unfounded. I'm leaning Warren, but would be thrilled with Biden -- because winning the White House, and the Congressional coattails provided by that win, is of paramount importance to achieving anything on the progressive agenda. And I am definitely in favor of the progressive agenda, if we can get there.
