(112,168 posts)I went to my college homecoming a few weeks ago and other than seeing one student with a Bernie shirt, I didn't see any other signs of support for him. There was even a political discussion on Friday night, plus I sat with various groups in the Commons and other areas where we discussed politics--there was no Bernie buzz at all and that was at one of the most liberal universities in the state which has nearly 30% of the students active in other civic engagements in the community. However, several of the students mentioned that they registered to vote when Beto ran for Senate last year.

(17,387 posts)...as well as his work with right wing Republicans from Iowa on immigration. It makes you wonder whether Bernie's anti-immigration positions were driven by the desire to target Iowa, because it does not make sense otherwise why Bernie would co-sponsor bills with some very right wing Iowa members of Congress. Not only has Bernie Sanders worked closely with Chuck Grassley, but even Steve King, one of the most racist members of Congress, has supported Bernie Sander's views on immigration.

Running as a presidential hopeful in 2016, Bernie Sanders has touted his support for immigration reform and the need to find a solution to a problem that has long vexed Washington.
But in 2007, Sanders was part of the charge from the left to kill an immigration overhaul bill.
Back then, the Vermont independent warned that the immigration bill a product from then-Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) would drive down wages for lower-income workers, an argument thats been used by hard-liner reform opponents. He paired with conservative Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) on a restrictive immigration amendment. And Sanders backed provisions characterized as poison pills to unravel the bill, while voting to block the final measure in June 2007.
Sanders history on immigration that year is complicated. But his overall record has come under renewed attention after criticism that the senator was being too quiet on the issue during his long-shot campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.

(112,168 posts)Without a Republican opponent there will be a contingent that will raid the Democratic primaries with the hope that they can influence us to nominate the weakest candidate to oppose Trump.
