when people speak of electing a "leader".

I don't need a leader. I know exactly where I want to go. I believe in our democracy when I vote for someone, I am hiring an employee who's job it is to get me to that destination. That person may be leading the team he or she hires to do that job, but they do not lead me.

You may see it differently, but that's what fits for me.

Trump followers are desperate to be ruled. It's like they have no will of their own, nor do they care to.

as well, and their duty becomes to support what he decides is right for them all. Research has shown the shift of that responsibility is a huge mechanism in authoritarian syndromes.

Whether right or far left, when a candidate becomes The Only Possible Leader of an uber-ardent following, we need to take a long, cool look at just what his messages are.

I do think there is the desire to elect a leader as in "one who knows how to lead" in exactly the way that you describe.
