Related: About this forumCenter Left democrats flip seats.
Left of left democrats seem to only win in democrat strong holds that are not seat flipping. That is my take away tonight.

Democrats have to be strategic in who runs where.

(111,963 posts)about the endorsements of AOC and Justice Democrats for Jessica Cisneros over U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar. The people in his district are satisfied with his performance and the benefits that his district receives because of his tenure in Congress. I expect Cuellar to win his primary by at least fifteen percentage points in March even though people from other states are donating heavily in order to defeat Cuellar.

(111,963 posts)I'm not as impressed with Hegar as most of the people on DU are because her personality rubs me wrong. Perhaps Cuellar feels the same way? I tried to keep an open mind, but when Hegar recently said that she opposed an assault weapons ban she fell out of my top three candidates that I'm considering for Senate.
Hegar also has no legislative experience, while her opponents, Chris Bell and Royce West do have legislative experience. While some have questioned Royce's involvement with getting a law school for the University of North Texas approved and funded, I consider it as being able to "bring home the bacon" for his constituents who are mostly minorities in southern Dallas. I'll say that is a monumental achievement for a Democrat in a Republican controlled Legislature and it shows that he is able to work with others, including those outside of the Democratic party.
Another opponent of Hegar is Amanda Edwards, who was elected to the Houston City Council. Meanwhile, Hegar has never held elected office. Hegar may have military command experience, but receiving and issuing orders isn't the same as forming relationships with her fellow colleagues so that goals can be accomplished.
And while party loyalty is important, I'll never vote for a candidate if they are unqualified for the position or if I doubt their ethical or moral values. In the cases of Cisneros and Hegar, I don't have any doubts about their ethics or morality, but I do believe that the other candidates are better matches with my own values and with the values of the constituents they intend to represent.

(15,637 posts)brainwashed, too busy working at life to pay attention or care, egocentric country. I get the point, but disagree with the fundamental premise. Though I do agree we must win hearts and minds to move left. We do that by progressives like Warren, Sanders and others stumping on economic justice issues.

(68,469 posts)grass roots level...local...house races..not the presidential election...the work has to be done before a progressive is nominated for president. The country must shift left before a candidate like Warren will win a general. I would vote for her but this will not be a base election...three states will tell the tale...MI, WI and PA.

(111,963 posts)you might want to check the results of the primaries that were prior to tonight's election to get your answer. If the "left of left" candidates already lost, then they aren't going to show up in tonight's results.

(15,637 posts)Im just asking a question that seems directly relevant to the claim being made. The claim is essentially dependent on it. For that reason, I dont buy the claim or its premise universally. Nearly every red state has a significant blue island or islands within it. Seed-sources for change. The argument for running moderates makes sense in theory where moderates have won a primary. I see more value than cost in economic positions being contested at the primary level.

(2,061 posts)AOC can beat who was one of the most progressive member in our party in a primary and then is guaranteed the seat in the general.
Whereas Charlie Crist can sneak his way through and beat out a Republican for a house seat, as was done.
I agree with most of your point above where you counter the "we are a center left country." Your reply needs to be said over and over again. But the premise in the op is pretty accurate.

irony is dead with some people, and also their memories of 2016 and what foreign entities favored which Dem in the 2016 primaries has apparently been erased. Or maybe its still just good old fashioned denial. Will leave it at that.

(15,265 posts)In an upset, Kendra Brooks won a seat on Philadelphia's City Council. The seat she won is generally resevered for the minority party, in Phila's case the GOP. She ran on the Working Families Party ballot line and also had the endorsement of Sen Warren.
Link: https://www.inquirer.com/news/pennsylvania-2019-election-results-20191106.html
In Philadelphia, Kendra Brooks became the first candidate from outside the two major parties to win a City Council seat in the 100 years since it adopted a modern legislative structure. Running as a Working Families Party candidate, Brooks won one of the at-large Council seats that the city charter effectively reserves for candidates from outside the majority party. For the past 70 years, those two seats have been filled by Republicans.

We broke the GOP," Brooks said at a victory party in North Philadelphia. "We beat the Democratic establishment. ... They said a black single mom from North Philly wasnt the right person but we have shown them that we are bigger than them.
The election didnt just showcase Democrats defeating Republicans, but also progressive insurgents beating machine Democrats.

(15,265 posts)There are two arguments I read quite often from supporters of other candidates. One that AfAms don't support Warren. The other that there's an unquenchable thirst for a centrist candidate.
Brroks' win shows the narrative that Warren doesn't have support of or supports AfAms isn't true.
It also shows the appetite for big change, not centrist incrementalism, as Brooks defeated the GOP and bucked the Dem establishment to win.
