Biden rips 'condescending' Democrats ...

Biden rips 'condescending' Democrats at Pittsburgh fund-raising speech

In a speech to deep-pocketed Democratic donors, politicians and real estate executives Tuesday evening in Pittsburgh, former Vice President Joe Biden called out “condescending” Democrats who believe it’s their way “or the highway” and lambasted President Donald Trump for damaging America’s standing internationally.

“There’s no way to get anything done, there’s no way to bring this country together, there’s no way to beat Donald Trump if we don’t start talking about what we’re for and why you can be extremely progressive but not be off the wall ... and [why you can be] extremely progressive but not be socialist,” Mr. Biden said to an audience of more than 200 in a hotel ballroom.

Though he didn’t mention her by name, Mr. Biden slammed Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren for saying earlier this week that the former vice president is “running in the wrong presidential primary.”

“On one level, it’s kind of funny,” Mr. Biden said. “I’ve been a Democrat my whole life. This person (Warren) has only fairly recently in the mid-’90s become a Democrat.” (Warren was registered as a Republican until 1996. She voted Republican for many years.

The post was published in an apparent effort to hit back at Warren in similar MadLibs fashion. But in incorporating the word “elitism,” Biden waded into Republican talking point territory.

“It’s representative of an elitism that working and middle class people do not share: ‘We know best; you know nothing.’ ‘If you were only as smart as I am you would agree with me,’” Biden wrote five paragraphs into his lengthy statement, all-but referencing Warren’s recent comments suggesting that he might not belong in the Democratic primary for pushing a more moderate plan than Medicare for All.
By Wednesday morning, Biden decided to fill in the blanks.

“If you don’t agree with Elizabeth Warren, you must somehow be not a Democrat. You must somehow be corrupt. You must somehow not be as smart as she is,” Biden said to Joe Madison on SiriusXM’s Urban View program. “It’s just something we don’t do in our party. It’s not who we are.

“She has things in her plan that are just not realistic, but if you question it, she says you don’t understand or you’re talking like a Republican,” he went on. “It’s just an elitist attitude that it’s either my way or the highway.”

Allies in Trump’s circle and the Republican Party have said privately for months that they view Warren as elite and intend to add that branding to their arsenal of attacks. And with the general election now less than one year out, those attacks could take on a new relevancy when promoted by Biden, one of the Democratic Party’s own leading presidential candidates.

"Warren's time as a corporate legal consultant and Harvard professor were bound to become fodder in this election,” one GOP operative told The Daily Beast. “Having Democrats start to define her as misleading and inauthentic only helps President Trump's ability to provide a clear contrast if she makes it to the general."

Conservative host Rush Limbaugh, a close ally of Trump, recently pushed the same line of critique on his “Morning Update” program. Last week, Limbaugh said that “the reason most voters will avoid Elizabeth Warren at all costs is because we’ve seen her and the elite in action.” As he went on, the rest of his statement offered a striking similarity to Biden’s own written comments dismissing the mentality that ‘If you were only as smart as I am you would agree with me,” which he wrote online on Tuesday night.

It's also curious that those in this thread who are beating on Biden said nary a peep last week when Warren said Biden was running in the "wrong primary", i.e., he should be running in the republican primary.

And the the other implication, "...deep-pocketed Democratic donors...", is off-base too. No one's pockets are deeper than $2800 worth, the same limit that all of the other candidates are under and HAVE accepted contributions at the $2800 limit.

Finally, to those claiming that Biden is "scared", why would he be scared when his lead in several states has been widening in the last couple of weeks. He's not scared, he's savvy.

No. She has not heard the talking points the Trump machine are going to use against her about M4All or the twenty-plus other politically and financially costly proposals she will have to defend

Warren and Sanders are not MLK or FDR. They are neither one enshrined in the party, much less transcendent and unifying national figures. At this time neither has a mandate for their proposals.

Republicans in Congress plan to gut and cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, and have done a heck of a job on ACA.

This, protecting the existing social safety net and improving our healthcare system by building on
ACA and bringing down pharmaceutical and medical costs is the conversation to have.

Many consider Biden a national treasure. Calling him a Republican was a mistake I don’t think
Warren can afford when she’s on the line to defend her campaign centerpiece, M4All.

That Republican talking point biz gets tired fast. Calling a dedicated Dem like Biden a Republican opens the door, fair or not.

I mean, he bashes Democrats for saying it is their way or the highway and then suggests that you have to vote for him or else. It is the rich wall-street Democrats and media millionaires who are threatening to bolt if Biden isn't the nominee.

This primary has been a disaster. We had a slam dunk. Worst president ever. Now the Democrats are eating each other. Greed. Neediness. Self-importance. I started out being so proud of our candidates. Then the campaign managers started taking over. I really don't think the candidates are as bad as they have been acting. But for the professional campaign managers, winning is more important than decency.

Tell me how either of them will be useful in the 2020 election campaign when one or the other gets the nomination? How can Biden campaign effectively for Warren when, at every interview, the reporter will play Biden's attacks on Warren for being unrealistic and elitist? How can Warren effectively support Biden when the media will have a bevy of quotes and clips of her going after him?

Show me the quote where Obama suggest that Warren was elitist.

84. Obama said Democrats had to be careful about purity
Wed Nov 6, 2019, 03:47 PM
Nov 2019

Obama told a town hall meeting in Berlin, Germany Saturday that he is concerned about "rigidity" among some liberal Democrats who attack others in the party for "straying from purity on the issues."

In both politics and civic life, he said, "You have to recognize that the way we've structured democracy requires you to take into account people who don't agree with you.....One of the things I do worry about sometimes among progressives in the United States--maybe it's true here as well--is a certain kind of rigidity where we say 'Oh, I'm sorry. This is how it's going to be.'"

And he made a comment recently- two I think...you can google it.

Those remarks could apply to Biden supporters just as well as to Warren supporters. I tried googling Obama calling Warren an elitist. It didn't happen.

You didn't reply as to how beneficial Biden could be to Warren if she became the nominee. Warren would have the same problem. Both of them are ignoring the good of the party (and the people) by attacking each other.

These debates and the whole primary have been extremely detrimental to the chances for the Democrats to win.

"The other day I was accused by one of my opponents of running in the wrong primary. Pretty amazing. On one level, it is kind of funny.

I have fought for the Democratic party my whole career. I know what we stand for, who we stand with and what we believe. And it’s not just policies or issues. It’s in my bones. That’s not something everyone in this primary can say.

But at another level these kinds of attacks are a serious problem. They reflect an angry unyielding viewpoint that has crept into our politics. If someone doesn’t agree with you — it’s not just that you disagree — that person must be a coward or corrupt or a small thinker.

Some call it the “my way or the highway” approach to politics. But it’s worse than that. It’s condescending to the millions of Democrats who have a different view.

It’s representative of an elitism that working and middle class people do not share: “We know best; you know nothing”. “If you were only as smart as I am you would agree with me.”"
