By Josh Feldman Nov 6th, 2019, 7:43 pm
Bill Gates today offered some criticism of Elizabeth Warren over her wealth tax proposal, making him the latest billionaire speaking out against Warrens proposed policies and campaign platform.
Gates said, If I had to pay $20 billion, its fine. But when you say I should pay $100 billion, then Im starting to do a little math about what I have left over.
When asked if he would meet with Warren, Gates responded, Im not sure how open minded she is or that shed even be willing to sit down with somebody who has large amounts of money.
The 2020 candidate herself responded on Twitter tonight, Im always happy to meet with people, even if we have different views. @BillGates, if we get the chance, Id love to explain exactly how much youd pay under my wealth tax. (I promise its not $100 billion.)

(25,454 posts)He's donated more than $25 billion to charity and plans to donate a lot more. He also started an organization with Warren Buffett to encourage other rich people to donate large chunks of their personal wealth to charity. Buffett plans to donate 99% of his wealth.

Lumping all billionaires into the same pool is a bit misguided, though we (and some of our candidates) do it all the time.

(83,710 posts)You are wrong. We do need them and their Foundation. They are doing good in this world.
Not every Billionaire or Millionaire is evil. I do not believe that you are slapping down Gates.
Perhaps you should make a list of the rich people we should hate. All of them? List a cut off of the dollar amount where we can start vilifying them.
Hill and Bill? They are rich and have a foundation that pays it forward.
Obama?
Steyer?
Warren?
Sanders?

(83,710 posts)18. F... Gates and his money. We don't need either.
It had an endowment of $50.7 billion as of December 31, 2017.[3] The scale of the foundation and the way it seeks to apply business techniques to giving makes it one of the leaders in venture philanthropy,[7] though the foundation itself notes that the philanthropic role has limitations.[8] In 2007, its founders were ranked as the second most generous philanthropists in the US, and Warren Buffett the first.[9] As of May 16, 2013, Bill Gates had donated $28 billion to the foundation.[1][10] Since its founding, the foundation has endowed and supported a broad range of social, health, and education developments including the establishment of the Gates Cambridge Scholarships at Cambridge University.
In 1994, the foundation was formed as the William H. Gates Foundation.[11] During the foundation's following years, funding grew to $2 billion. On June 15, 2006, Gates announced his plans to transition out of a day-to-day role with Microsoft, effective July 31, 2008,[12] to allow him to devote more time to working with the foundation.
In 2005, Bill and Melinda Gates, along with the Irish rock musician Bono, were named by Time as Persons of the Year 2005 for their outstanding charitable work.[13] In the case of Bill and Melinda Gates, the work referenced was that of this foundation.

Frankly I wish we had more "self-entitled, pampered creeps" like gates.. People that actually do something opposed to those that just talk about change.

(7,517 posts)The net work of Bill Gates (and most other billionaires) fluctuates based on the moves of the stock market. Bill Gates is particularly affected by Microsoft's stock; I'm sure he's diversified his portfolio but he is still the second largest holder.

Look, Bill Gates could be the nicest guy in the world, that doesn't mean he should be able to hoard over 100 billion dollars in wealth, that's just obscene.
