such that much lower incomes — like median and below— would have to be taxed.

We’d have healthcare, which is good, but we’d be paying much more in taxes with other needs looming — like climate change, bolstering Social Security, deficit and debt reduction, jobs, etc.

It would be nice if we had universal healthcare, but we won’t get elected if we run on MFA in 2020.

We’d also had healthcare if we’d stayed with Britain 250 years ago. Slavery would have ended sooner too.

child care and health care would grow the economy at historic rates.
suspect the ultra-wealthy would just end up more so.

"average" earners more heavily to pay for everything.

Warren just needs to come clean and stop acting like she can do all her stuff without having us pay through taxes. Then, we can make an informed choice. I'd likely choose all those things, but with modifications like a Public Option as a faster way to MFA than cramming it down the throats of people who either just don't want it or are too stupid to see its benefit.

5. Any given day...

I had an appointment at my drs. yesterday. It's a fairly nice urgent care / general practice... never met the actual doctor but I like my "provider" Anyway, I arrived and there was a woman at the counter and it's hard not to overhear. She felt like their was a heavy weight on her chest, she managed to get the energy to walk across the street and the short distance to the urgent care. She didn't have insurance. Her ex did and they were technically married but she didn't have a card. She's missed 3 days of work.

I wanted to help but didn't have the money or the courage to say "hey I overheard everything" etc..

But this is what life is like for most of the country.

I hate it when people talk about how we can't do it because it's not popular. The only reason it's not popular is because of the constant disinformation campaigns run by republicans, special interests and idiots. But I guess they're right because after all, half of america voted for that piece of **** in the white house. Our country is just full of that many stupid people.

This woman will probably be alright, I hope. But it wouldn't even be a question if we had universal healthcare.

who were talking about how their hours were kept below full time and between paying their child support and healthcare they were barely getting by. They hated their jobs and were at the mercy of bad employers and there was no relief in sight. Seems like they could look for a more satisfying jobs if they didn't have the pressure of buying health insurance. Those men and their families deserve better.

8. Paying for Medicare for All
Sun Nov 10, 2019, 06:53 PM
Nov 2019

Actually Warren's plan make sense. A higher tax rate for billionaires would leave them still billionaires but bring in millions and maybe billions to the federal govt. And sparing people from having to spend out-of-pocket or savings for medical care could enable enormous sums to be freed to pay for universal Medicare. How do you suppose the European countries pay for their national medicine programs? Once people are liberated from the devastating effect of large medical bills a great deal of good can be accomplished.

She is proposing a new tax on assets not income. The European countries you are referring to don't use a wealth tax to finance their health care. They abandoned such a tax because it was ineffective. They generally use VAT to pay for health care for their citizens.

Thought exercises like this can be helpful, but it also helps to be realistic.

I hope that if she's the nominee, and if we can then get her into office, that her plan can be pushed through Congress without any loopholes being added in. And I hope that if that happens, that wealthy people don't just start spreading assets out among friends and family, or find other methods of avoiding the tax.
