Former Rival Tim Ryan Endorses Joe Biden's White House Bid

Time

Congressman and failed presidential contender Tim Ryan of Ohio announced Wednesday morning that he is endorsing former Vice President Joe Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination.

In an interview with TIME, Ryan cited as reasons for his endorsement Biden’s ability to connect with blue-collar voters and to lure industrial midwestern states, like Ohio, back into the Democratic fold. Ryan, who represents a district that includes Youngstown, added that he believes Biden can rally other parts of the Democratic coalition, specifically African-American voters who voted for Barack Obama in 2012 but stayed home in 2016.

“I kept circling back as I’ve looked through all the candidates and they’re all very impressive in their own regard,” he said, before referencing his home county in northeast Ohio. “But in my mind who is the best person to win Trumbull County?” In 2016, Trumbull County voted for a Republican—Donald Trump—for the first time since Richard Nixon’s 1972 re-election and is seen as a stand-in for the so-called Blue Wall, a string of midwestern states that once reliably voted Democratic.

Ryan argues that a winning message for Trumbull County is a winning message throughout much of the Midwest. “Which means you can win Michigan, you can win Wisconsin, you can win western Pennsylvania, you can put Ohio totally back in play,” he said.

Lots of liberals, like myself, are putting aside our purity test because we have to beat Trump. Biden- by a landslide- is the best candidate to smash Trump in the mid West and probably win Florida. I plan on going to bed early on election night...

cares about his constituents. Ryan did a great deal for Delphi workers screwed over by Delphi he often picked up his own phone and had many meeting done at union hall to discuss issues affecting union. He is from Youngstown...it is in his blood. If Ryan says Biden has a shot to turn Ohio blue, take it to the bank. And if we win Ohio, Trump loses...hopefully we get rid of our current do nothing loser governor next time. We really need some party rebuilding in Ohio.

the long night ahead...but at 9:23 , they called Ohio...we were all jumping up and down...screaming our fool heads off. Hubs and my son called so did my sis and other family members. We put them on speaker. History had been made and the best president in my lifetime had won election. There had been polls...internal polls showing McCain was above 50%. The polls were up and down. I couldn't believe it. And we had the Senate with a 60 vote majority...and the house. It was the best election night ever.

primary today, I would vote for:
