Related: About this forumWhat, exactly, is Hillary Clinton doing? Chris Cillizza Analysis by Chris Cillizza,
https://www.cnn.com/2019/11/13/politics/hillary-clinton-president-2020/index.html...Let's start here: I don't think she is actually planning any sort of last-minute entry into the 2020 race a la potentially former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg or former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick. If Clinton had been making calls and putting out feelers to donors and/or activists in places like Iowa or New Hampshire, we would have known about it by now. I truly do not think she is going to run for president again.
So, then, what's she doing? A few ideas:
1. There are still plenty of people -- I'm sure -- who tell Clinton the race, the party and the country need her. By keeping her toe ever so slightly in the water, it shows those supporters that she's not entirely ignoring them.
2. Clinton and her daughter, Chelsea, are in the midst of a book tour selling "The Book of Gutsy Women." This interview -- with BBC radio -- was part of that book tour. What better way to gin up some sales -- and, more generally, interest -- than to keep open the possibility of a last-minute entrance into the presidential race?
3. Clinton has made clear, repeatedly, that she wants to remain a relevant voice in the national conversation. The best way to do that -- at least until filing deadlines close and it's clear she won't run -- is to preserve the prospect that Clinton might wind up as a late entrant into the presidential race.
Cillizza, usually a vacuous twit, is correct here.

(43,123 posts)but it's too farfetched and don't want to feed speculation. The popular vote winner of 2016 by a large margin can bow out - or not - when she wishes, and comment as she pleases.

(2,061 posts)1) "By keeping her toe ever so slightly in the water." Where is she keeping her toe even near the shoreline? Seems kind of like the people who really wanted Warren to run in 16 and would come up with word game after word game as to how she wasn't declining to run.
2) Remove this sentence and there is truth there. "than to keep open the possibility of a last-minute entrance into the presidential race?" Cillizza can't even keep his own words straight. First it's "keeping her toe ever so slightly in the water" followed by "keep open the possibility of a last-minute entrance.
3) Clinton has been overall very quiet. Specially the first two years after her loss. Only more recently are we seeing her open up more. The timing coincides with her book tour. You figure it out. Cillizza can't.

(9,117 posts)I hope that Hillary Clinton is willingly playing the role of a bright shiny distraction for the Right-Wing Whack-astani media to keep them distracted while Joe or Elizabeth puts their 2020 narrative in place for the 2020 general election.

(9,290 posts)while Hillary thinks big. It is far more likely that Hillary is getting ready to assume the role of an elder stateswoman (an easy task, given her background) beyond daily politics. A title she has earned with a lifetime's worth of effort and accomplishment. Sort of like Jimmy Carter, who is arguably better known and respected for his work after his presidency ended.
It is heartening to see that Hillary has no intention of disappearing into the woodwork, as many of her detractors wish she would.

(10,828 posts)This is it. Hillary Clinton has no intention of disappearing into the woodwork or staying mute when danger raises its ugly head. She has a lifetime of experience and knowledge to share.
Why would we expect her to disappear when her influence has shaped so many, particularly in regards to the welfare of women and children and her extensive awareness of geopolitical tensions and challenges? She is a treasure trove of information and perspective.
We're lucky to have her behind the scene offering advice and good counsel. And for those Hillary-haters out there?
Tough Tooties.

(37,748 posts)But I get the visceral desire of the gallery and third-tier candidates to keep the light on her.... they really, really want to run against her, as she's the enemy they know how to fight; all the better to play the disingenuous and simplistic "I'm concerned she might run/hurt the party" trope.

(1,600 posts)If Hillary is still possibly in the race (she isn't imo), it sends the wingnuts into a tizzy, and divides their focus on attacking real candidates for as long as she keeps this idea afloat. For once, the 25-years of wingnut anti-Hillary propaganda is working against them.
