Deval Patrick Enters 2020 Race with Long-shot Candidacy

https://newsnotpolitics.com/2019/11/14/deval-patrick-to-enter-the-202-presidential-race/

Former Governor of Massachusetts Deval Patrick on Thursday declared his candidacy in the Democratic primary for the 2020 Presidential race.

Patrick’s late entry into the Democratic primary race means that his campaign will face substantial organizational and funding challenges as it prepares for the early state primaries and caucuses, now less than three months away.

However, Patrick is also seen as a candidate uniquely capable of potentially uniting the disparate factions comprising the Democratic Party in a manner reminiscent of what Barack Obama was able to achieve.

Patrick served two terms as Massachusetts governor and currently works at Bain Capital, the same private equity firm that once employed 2012 GOP Presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

NNP Quote: “So in a spirit of profound gratitude for all the country has given to me, with a determination to build a better, more sustainable, more inclusive American Dream for the next generation, I am today announcing my candidacy for President of the United States.” – Deval Patrick Announcement Video

NNP Background: Deval Patrick flirted with entering the 2020 Presidential race in 2018, but decided against it, calling the process “cruel.” However, as Democrats have failed to coalesce around a single frontrunner, and moderates grow increasingly fretful of the current choices, moderate-left candidates like Patrick see an opportunity.

Although current frontrunner Joe Biden is friends with former President Obama, Patrick has an even deeper relationship with Obama. The former President reportedly encouraged the Patrick to run in 2020.

To get both perspectives on these events, we analyzed an article from a left-leaning media source and an article from a right-leaning media source below!

4. And there's this..bares repeating! Firing leaders who wouldn't look the other way while governor

In 2014 Deval Patrick fired leaders of his state's Sex Offender Registry for trying to force his brother in law to register due to being convicted of rape in California in 1993.

5. I'm not a big Deval Patrick fan. Firing people trying to get his brother in law

to register on the sex offender list is a disqualifier to me. And his employment with Bain Capital makes him a bit questionable to me.

We'll see how his campaign goes, but I'm thinking he won't go long in the primaries. The others are way too established with donor bases and everything.

7. I do not think that "Buttigieg but older," or "Biden but younger" ticket will work
Thu Nov 14, 2019, 04:35 PM

According to Perry Bacon on Nate's site, Patrick is running on “Buttigieg but older,” or “Biden but younger” ticket fivethirtyeight.com/features/why-deval-patrick-is-making-a-late-bid-for-the-democratic-nomination/

You might think that Patrick’s logical path is to compete with Biden for black voters, and with Warren and Sanders for New Hampshire voters (all three come from neighboring states). And sure, it would help Patrick if he can peel off some of Warren’s well-educated liberal voters, particularly in New Hampshire. And to win the nomination, he will probably have to close the big lead that Biden has with African-Americans. But I think the real opening for Patrick is essentially to replace Pete Buttigieg as the candidate for voters who want a charismatic, optimistic, left-but-not-that-left candidate. Patrick, I think, is betting that there’s a “Goldilocks” opportunity for him — “Buttigieg but older,” or “Biden but younger” — a candidate who is viewed as both safe on policy and safe on electability grounds by Democratic establishment types and voters who just want a somewhat generic Democratic candidate that they are confident will win the general election.....

There is a potential problem, though: I’m not sure voters really want Buttigieg-but-older or Biden-but-younger. Whatever the Democratic elites think, Democratic voters like the current field, as I noted above. That makes me think that people in Iowa, where the South Bend mayor is surging, are not looking for Buttigieg-but-older. They’re probably well aware of how old Buttigieg is — he talks about it all the time! Biden, meanwhile, has led in national polls most of the year and has solid leads in Nevada and South Carolina — it’s possible many voters view his age and related experience as a feature not a bug. Patrick will be a fresh candidate and perhaps have a more honed message, but in the end may register with actual voters not much differently than Booker or Harris or any of the other lower-tier candidates, black or non-black....

So my bottom line: Patrick is a more logical candidate to lead the Democratic Party than 77-year-old Michael Bloomberg, who has also been considering a last-ditch candidacy. The former New York City mayor is old, had tense relationships with black activists in the city and isn’t that closely tied to the Democratic Party. Patrick is black, not that old, a former civil rights lawyer and a stalwart Democrat. He would have been a totally logical Democratic nominee in 2016 and even 2020 if he had run a traditional campaign from the beginning. His late entrance, however, makes his path really, really hard. I’m sure the donor crowd that he talks to is convinced t

8. Agree, but this thing with firing employees from the sex registry office for his family member?

The GOP will have a hay day with that!

And we should not accept it either. Al Franken did not get a pass for his supposed sexual advances..Patrick’s family member was convicted of rape and is a repeat offender. Whether the employees “needed” firing or not, no one should get a pass on a sex offender registry.

Smacks of the kind of privilege the gop want for themselves

Very few politicians can get into the race at this stage of the game. Governor Patrick, I don't think, makes the list. Good luck to him. To me this sounds like a way to get media attention and be somebody's pick for Vice Presidency.
