(49,081 posts)campaign, and Patrick has friends, including at Bain, who should be able to help him out via super-PAC donations. So both men would like to run and can afford to run.
They're both competent politicians.
And Patrick might think he can take African-American support away from Biden, when neither Harris nor Booker have been able to.
One of the articles I saw on Patrick also mentioned that a Massachusetts poll last year showed voters there preferred him to Warren in a possible presidential run (this was before she announced she was definitely running).
I don't believe either Bloomberg or Patrick had to be "talked into" running.
As for what they have to offer that other candidates don't...that question could be asked of others already running.
FWIW, I don't think they're going to be able to reach the top tier or influence it.

is that they are both thinking Brokered Convention with no clear front runner coming out of the primaries and hoping to be the "White Knight" around which the party would unite.

(2,897 posts)I have my issues with both, but if they can jump in and resonate with voters more than everyone else, then more power to them. I always get annoyed when people react to late candidates as if they're some attack on your candidate or their ideas. If your candidate loses to them, then they didn't deserve to be the nominee anyway.
I doubt that either is going anywhere. However, the first caucus isn't until Feb. 3rd. and things can always change.
