Boston Globe: Biden was the Admiral Stockdale of this debate

Former vice president Joe Biden

Grade: D

Biden was the Admiral Stockdale of this debate: who is he and what is he doing here?

Who he is, of course, is the national Democratic frontrunner and the former vice president. But he ended up being a total non-factor in this debate and did nothing to stop the bleeding on his early state poll numbers or his campaign cash.

Biden constantly makes the argument he is the best Democrat to be on the debate stage with Donald Trump. However, he has yet to have a good debate, and in every debate he said something that was just weird, or he had a bad moment.

In Wednesday night’s debate, he was unsteady. He said he had the endorsement of the only African-American woman who was ever elected to the Senate. But there was a second African-American woman elected to the Senate — Kamala Harris — and she was standing on the stage with him.

Then there was his repeated use of the word “punching” when speaking about domestic violence.

Yikes.

In November the fate of our nation will be determined by a narrow margin -- if it wasn't already in 2014 or 2016. We don't know if we've already had our last genuine election yet. But assuming we didn't, I think it's way past time to realize what's at stake and commit to winning.

Trump, rising fascism and white nationalism, beginnings of ethnic cleansing, massive transfer of wealth and power away from the people, end of progressivism and liberalism in government. And so much more.

That doesn't mean supporting Biden, it means refusing any behavior that would help the Republicans and Russia to try to bring him down. Because he's currently still our top choice and we have to protect our best chance, whoever it is.

65. What Joe Biden Can't Bring Himself to Say
Thu Nov 21, 2019, 08:17 PM
Nov 2019

I was a stutter until about 4th grade. I find these attacks on Biden to be sad. This article about Joe's stuttering really hit home with me. The discussion of the movie The King's Speech was very moving for me.

In Biden’s office, the first time I bring up his current stuttering, he asks me whether I’ve seen The King’s Speech. He speaks almost mystically about the award-winning 2010 film. “When King George VI, when he stood up in 1939, everyone knew he stuttered, and they knew what courage it took for him to stand up at that stadium and try to speak—and it gave them courage … I could feel that. It was that sinking feeling, like—oh my God, I remember how you felt. You feel like, I don’t know … almost like you’re being sucked into a black hole.”

Presidential candidates usually don’t speak about their bleakest moments, certainly not this viscerally. It resembles the way Biden writes in his memoir about the aftermath of the 1972 car accident that killed his first wife and young daughter and critically injured his two sons, Beau and Hunter: “I could not speak, only felt this hollow core grow in my chest, like I was going to be sucked inside a black hole.”

A few weeks later, I ask Jill Biden what she remembers about sitting next to her husband during the movie. “It was one of those moments in a marriage where you just sort of understand without words being spoken,” she says.

As he watched The King’s Speech, Biden accurately guessed that the screenwriter, David Seidler, was a stutterer. “He showed me a copy of a speech they found in an attic that the king had actually used, where he marks his—it’s exactly what I do!” Biden tells me, his voice lifting. “My staff, when I have them put something on a prompter—I wish I had something to show you.”

I agree with Joe that it would be difficult for trump to use Joe's stutter against him
In Biden’s office, as my time is about to run out, I bring up the fact that Trump crudely mocked a disabled New York Times reporter during the 2016 campaign. “So far, he’s called you ‘Sleepy Joe.’ Is ‘St-St-St-Stuttering Joe’ next?”

“I don’t think so,” Biden says, “because if you ask the polls ‘Does Biden stutter? Has he ever stuttered?,’ you’d have 80 to 95 percent of people say no.” If Trump goes there, Biden adds, “it’ll just expose him for what he is.”

I ask Biden something else we’ve been circling: whether he worries that people would pity him if they thought he still stuttered.

He scratches his chin, his fingers trembling slightly. “Well, I guess, um, it’s kind of hard to pity a vice president. It’s kind of hard to pity a senator who’s gotten six zillion awards. It’s kind of hard to pity someone who has had, you know, a decent family. I-I-I-I don’t think if, now, if someone sits and says, ‘Well, you know, the kid, when he was a stutterer, he must have been really basically stupid,’ I-I-I don’t think it’s hard to—I’ve never thought of that. I mean, there’s nobody in the last, I don’t know, 55 years, has ever said anything like that to me.”

This is an issue that I have strong feelings about.

See Joe Biden, who struggled immediately to sustain basic coherence when answering a question. I know many of your elder kin love this man because he’s friends with Barack Obama, but seriously, enough. Donald Trump is a damn fool, but he is a lot quicker than this man. See Biden responding to a question about male violence against women with the following tone deaf comment: “We have to keep punching at it, and punching at it, and punching at it.”

Or that odd comment he made about coming out of the Black community. He tripped over his words, which is not exactly a new hobby of Biden, but one that’s worsening with time. His stumbles only increased as time went on in this debate. That’s why I laugh at Biden’s claims that Trump’s Ukraine scandal serves a testament to the assertion that he is the most formidable Democrat seeking the nomination. Someone needs to stop confusing an easy target with being the hardest to defeat.

If they really wanted to scare Trump, they’d nominate a woman. But to his point, he does command a huge portion of the Black vote so we may be stuck with him. Please convince your relatives next week to save me from this. Since the Democratic establishment, in all its continued uselessness, can’t.

Your post is not really worthy of a reply since you claim something that's in no way possible to infer from my post.

Obama is absolutely black. So is Harris, if she identifies as such. But she is not African. African is not synonymous with black, and African is no more an ethnicity than "American" is. These points are self-evident and shouldn't even have to be made, unless one is willfully obtuse.

Enough with the semantics. The main point is, Biden was right. And anyone claiming otherwise is just being disingenuous and playing politics.

90. Harris' ancestors weren't slaves
Sat Nov 23, 2019, 04:38 AM
Nov 2019

She's a descendant on her father's side of an Irish slave owner who moved to Jamaica and founded a town there. He owned scores of slaves, but most of them Creole and not African. This according to Harris' own dad, who has Irish ancestry on both his maternal and paternal side. So, even calling Kamala Harris Irish-American is more correct than African-American. Having a little more melanin in your complexion than whites isn't enough to make you African. Having relatively immediate African ancestry makes you African. Otherwise the whole world is African, since humanity originated there.

The seeming obsession here with making everyone with a darker shade than a white sheet out to be African is a bit weird, and frankly insulting to people of color who are not African. Last I heard, Senator Harris identifies as Indian-American. If she also identifies as African-American, nobody is hurt by it for sure. But why isn't it appropriate to question? If I identify as a banana, will you blindly accept it without proof?

The point is, again, that Biden was right, and this whole thing is a complete non-story and just a politically motivated attack.

And what do you know about my ethnicity to assume I'm whitesplaining?

Senator Harris is seemingly quite proud of her Indian heritage, having spoken about it many times. If she also identifies as African, did she object when Biden spoke about the only African-American senator?

In fact, has she spoken at all about being African? I find instances of her speaking about blackness and being black, but not claiming to be African-American. Can you point me to one such instance please? Or are you trying to ascribe something to her that she's not even claiming herself, just because you too conflate "African" and "black"? Seems a bit whitesplainy to me if so.

he said. I didn’t see him changing what he said because he didn’t need to. He added a polite addendum but what he said was correct. Harris and Cory were ready to pounce since they wanted to diminish his support with African American voters.

He was honoring CMB by saying she had been the first AA female Senator.

She had been the only elected Senator means
she was the first Senator. It doesn’t mean she was the only Senator. He didn’t correct himself out of error because he wasn’t wrong.

If you have to browbeat people with these biased interpretations, it means there wasn’t much there to begin with.

I’m more disgusted with Harris for making a nice tribute to CMB about herself in a mistaken way. Now we are reminded that Biden swore Harris in as an Indian-American, so he wasn’t wrong.
