Democratic Primaries

(snip)
While much of America was introduced to Klobuchar as being difficult and maybe even a bit manic the opposite of "Minnesota Nice" she actually has a longer reputation for being funny. And in a field of 15 Democratic candidates, she's not only planning to use her sense of humor to stand out among the herd, she thinks it'll be a critical ingredient in taking on President Donald Trump, who knows how to savagely deploy a zinger, even if it may be outrageous, loony or offensive. Now she wants people laughing at her not in the same way as Trump, of course but as a conduit to her broader candidacy. Yes, Klobuchar is a serious person attempting to attain the highest office in all the land. But she also wants you to know, she gets the joke. So when Trump called her a "snow woman" on the day of her blustery presidential announcement in February, she waited a few hours before slapping back with a dig at how his hair might hold up in such blizzard-like conditions.
(snip)
Klobuchar's sense of humor can be self-deprecating, topically cutting, hokey and even dirty as when she said her remarks to the Gridiron would be "shorter than a Robert Kraft visit to the Orchids day spa." "I decided it was worth it because I liked the comeback: A woman is the only one that can tell a dirty joke," she says. "I don't tell a lot of dirty jokes. There were other dirty jokes I considered I wouldn't tell. I would never do that one on the trail." But she likely has more public experience performing ribbing repertoires than almost any other presidential candidate, save Trump.
(snip)
It was her performance at the 2009 Washington Press Club Foundation Congressional Dinner that put her on the map as a comedic force. As she mulled jokes beforehand, she asked senators individually for permission to needle them... Leading up to the night, Politico quoted an anonymous pundit saying she'd bomb. Instead, it was her Republican counterpart, Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, who stalled on stage. Klobuchar brought down the house. "I raised $17,000 from ex-boyfriends," she said of her first Senate campaign. "Speaker Pelosi, I may have the record in the Senate, but I know in the House that record is held by Barney Frank." Even Frank was spotted chuckling. Afterward, Steny Hoyer, the House majority whip from Maryland told her, "You beat [McCarthy] so much. It wasn't even close."
(snip)
Klobuchar even has examples of how she's used humor to cut through substantive Senate stalemates, like when new mother Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois came to her for help on changing a rule that barred newborn babies from the Senate floor. When Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah mused what would happen "if there are 10 babies on the floor of the Senate," Klobuchar retorted, "We already have 10 babies on the floor!"

(56,829 posts)she was a member of an Improv Troupe while at Yale. I live in Connecticut and have seen groups of students at Yale do various performances - Vocal/A Capella groups, Opera, and others. If she was in an improv troupe there, she was likely pretty good at comedy, which I think is important in things like debates and in making appearances on TV.
