Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumGuys. I'm just about to swing my support to Biden.
I was a Warren supporter, and I still agree with 90% of her positions on things BUT...WE HAVE TO BEAT TRUMP. I just don't think Warren and Buttigieg can excite Black voters to get out to vote in the overwhelming numbers we will need in 2020. Let's face it. We are NOT going to turn any Trumpers away from him so we will need to GOTV to win. Biden is a safe choice and this is an emergency.

As you fold a bunch of socks, maybe consider what it means for the nation that Biden's strong and broad support has remained impressive, that his position well out ahead nationally is almost the only constant in this extremely, extremely weird political year.
While naturally some want someone else, I think we all should be extremely grateful that we haven't spent the last months watching candidates struggling without a strong, enduring leader emerging. Because VP Biden's in the race, at least every one of us has one genuinely strong candidate among our choices, and in these times of danger that should be enormously reassuring.

(47,430 posts)but Democrats have a bad habit of always looking for the next JFK or FDR and when they aren't inspired, they often stay home. Meanwhile, republicans vote religiously, inspired or not. McCain, Romney, both Bushes? Not exactly inspiring leaders.
Democrats need to get out and vote in every election for every office, and not put so much focus on one person every four years.
Though I think Biden is probably safer than some candidates, I am supporting him because I do believe he would be a good president, not just because I think he can beat Trump. And there have been plenty of times when he DID inspire me, but I don't need that to vote for an experienced, competent candidate.

Undecided general-election voters most like the businessman Andrew Yang and former Vice President Joe Biden out of all the Democratic candidates, a new Insider poll found.

And this
Voters are fairly clear about what they would like from a Democrat. They prefer, by 82% to 11%, one who promises to find common ground over one who promises to fight for a progressive agenda; and they prefer a moderate over a liberal, 75% to 19%.
They support Biden over the president, 38% to 27%, but prefer the president to Warren, 37% to 20%. Sanders is in between, with the president leading him, 34% to 32%. This group voted for Trump by a smaller margin in 2016, 37% to 30%, with the rest casting ballots for minor candidates.

Trump lied to them about everything, just like he lied to us. Donald Trump is a pathological liar. People don't need to be a genius to see that. Everyone sees that...and when someone lies to you over and over and over, you do not want him in a leadership role. Not any leadership role...
So a good percentage of those who were passionate about Trump will not vote for him again, because of the reason that you said, "he is a fu ken liar. " He knows that, and we know that and those who were passionate know that. And of those who were strong supporters, I would say 1/4 to 1/3 will not vote for him..under any circumstances. He is the kind of person that makes a person
...Now, we have had this before, with George McGovern, who I worked for and gave money to. His campaign was so bad across the country, that many people I talked to just slammed the door on me. It was awful, because McGovern would have gotten us out of the war much earlier.
...But, he was presented in such a way that he made people He lost every state but Massachusetts. The electoral vote for Nixon was incredible.. My guess is the exact same thing will happen to Trump. He lies too much, is disrespectful, is a fool, and doesn't care about anyone but himself. (not faults McGovern had) And most important,,people have had a lot of time to see this and
...What will happen is a lot of the people who were staunch supporters of Trump, will just stay home. They won't vote for the Democratic candidate, they will protest Trump by not voting for him. (they won't vote at all) ...that is what is going to happen. We will win, no matter who we pick. (Yes, we still need to pick the strongest candidate, because, this prediction could be all wrong..wait, I got to

Candidates talk big ideas to get votes, but to follow through is tough.
Why do I support Biden? Because he has been in an administration, he was next in line for the job if something terrible had happened.
Obama sought his confidence.
What we need is someone who can put this nation back on track above all else. They must also be someone who can beat Trump.
Yes, I am for health care and all that other stuff, but I see Biden as the best person to put America back on the world stage.
That is why, twice a week, I host a call party from my house, calling on behalf of the Biden Campaign to build support ahead of the primaries.

(10,828 posts)I, too, like Elizabeth Warren, think she's been a hell'va senator.
But for winning the GE against Trump? I'm with Biden.
Doesn't hurt that Joe Biden is the most qualified for the position and the only candidate with hands-on foreign policy experience. Then there's the Trust Quotient. Despite all the bad press and criticism, the Ukraine brouhaha, etc., Joe Biden continues to lead the pack in the polls and in terms of electability, likability and in the simple yet important element of trust. Voters trust Joe Biden will know what to do from Day 1: heal and restore the country's institutions and our commitment to the rule of law while shoring up our alliances abroad. Only then can we truly move forward with all the important business left undone and/or ravaged by Trump's incompetence, his obsession with tearing away any semblance of a Democratic Republic.
The man who would be King will be replaced by a man who would be in service to the country and her people.
The man who would be in service to the country and her people can win this thing.
And for 2020? WINNING IS EVERYTHING.

(15,369 posts)When will we Dems realize that NO Democrat is a "safe" choice?
GOPers will tear ANY nominee who IS a Democrat to shreds.
What we need is someone who will stand up to them, call them out for what they are and who has a track record of actually inspiring and organizing a majority of US voters to get up off their behinds, get to the polls and vote for the Democratic candidate.
To my mind, Elizabeth Warren is indeed such a person. There are several other primary candidates who possibly could be as well.
But please do remember that Biden has already participated in two Presidential primaries and didn't excite a majority of voters in either.
The only thing that has changed since those earlier primaries is that he was an excellent Veep for the second best President of my lifetime (when I was born, FDR was President). While his name recognition and generally favorable ratings may be high as a result, his actual accomplishments from that era have been vicarious in that they were ALL associated with President Obama.

(15,369 posts)me to post #36 because whoever wrote it is apparently on my "Ignore" list.
And exactly what part of my post is not true? That GOPers won't smear ANY Dem? That Biden didn't lose a majority of Dem voters in his two earlier primary runs? That he hasn't basically achieved his general favorable recognition today because of his association with Prez O?
??????
Too many seem to have forgotten Biden's performance when he was on his own, especially that in the 90s. You can bet that GOPers will use that against him - likely to excellent effect - if he is the Dem candidate. Prez O's coattails may not help him there. Are you really willing to take that chance?
Unlike Hillary, who was castigated for her vote on Iraq throughout the 2016 campaign, people seem to have forgotten that the much more "experienced" legislator Joe Biden also voted for that totally disastrous AND unwarranted war. Do you really believe that won't be resurrected and used against him?
And then there is Hunter. While what GOPers led by Trump are trying to do with that situation is unpardonable and outright wrong, the fact is that it is still a situation where an ostensibly unqualified person received cushy jobs based only on his presumed access to the Veep. Please remember what GOPers did with Benghazi and Hillary's emails - both of which were totally manufactured "scandals." They resonated with too many in the GE. Are your sure that this one won't?
Bloomberg and Patrick are apparently not so sure about any of this, which is likely why they've jumped in.
I personally believe that Biden is MUCH the best choice of the three. But lots of Dems still don't seem that sure about him.
**********
In 2016, Hillary Clinton wasn't just the "safe" choice; she was absolutely the BEST choice. She has been, without exception, the MOST qualified candidate EVER to run for US President.
And yet even she was endlessly - and effectively - smeared!

But nobody here can see the future, and conventional wisdom about things like "electability" tends to be something more like self-fulfilling prophecy than fact. (3,696 posts)I think it was unfortunate that Warren ended up having to reveal the nitty gritty details of M4All when Bernie has been campaigning on it for years without ever having to provide any details of the costs, impact on taxes or loss of jobs that would come IF it was ever implemented. Add in the elimination of all commercial/Employer based coverage and it becomes am albatross for any candidate hoping to win a general election. I'm surprised that it seems Warren is losing support so early in the primary though if it is indeed related to her embrace of Med4All. It would say that quite a few Democrats aren't thrilled about M4All either. I'm one of them. I want a healthcare bill that can actually get enacted soon with a path for continued movement to universal coverage in some form.
