Politico Magazine: Why some on the left (esp Jacobin magazine) have turned on Warren

Long and interesting piece

https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2019/12/08/elizabeth-warren-jacobin-socialist-left-072693

on why Jacobin in particular is going after Warren, and how this is dividing progressives.

I'm not going to summarize it or post excerpts -- it should be read in full -- but I wanted to post the link here for Warren supporters who might wonder what's going on, and for Sanders supporters who might agree or disagree with what Jacobin is doing.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

with a man sitting at 80, just having had a serious heart attack, not a Democrat, that will hire the person (VP) to take his place if he dies in office. Especially after his hiring record over the last 3 years and especially the last year. While in the democratic Party.

It blows my mind that he is even a contender and someone like a smart, accomplished, solid Democrat like Harris stepped out this week.

And I am curious about the reaction of Warren and Sanders supporters, especially those who've suggested supporters of the two candidates could coalesce, as if on one ticket, to oppose Biden.

This piece also may help explain in part why Warren has been losing some supporters to Sanders. Her loss of support to Buttigieg is probably largely due to the complications she ran into with MFA.

Here's the first quote from Sunkara, with my emphasis:

“We can’t directly convert people,” he said. “What we can do is try to cohere together—from all these different strands and threads—some sort of left opposition to liberalism, give it a name and call it democratic socialism, and create a debating grounds for these broad sets of ideas.”

I wish more liberals knew this before engaging with socialists, who do know this.

Sunkara, a socialist, isn't trying to "cohere together" socialists and liberals or convert conservatives to liberals. Sunkara and his magazine Jacobin, are trying to destroy liberalism and set up socialism as the only alternative to conservatism.

Vox article on the magazine's first years, which included some info current then:

https://www.vox.com/2016/3/21/11265092/jacobin-bhaskar-sunkara

And Jacobin’s leadership runs it like a business. “We’re all organized around the same goal: traffic,” Sunkara declared at one point. Checking subscription revenue in Stripe is, he declared, “honestly my favorite part of the day.”

Jacobin is not dependent on the backing of a major corporation or a wealthy donor, which is unusual for a left-wing publication in today’s publishing landscape. It makes the overwhelming share of its money the old-fashioned way: by selling subscriptions and print copies. That provides about $500,000 in revenue annually, enough to pay for printing costs and salaries and have a bit left over for a rainy day.

It's a self-defined socialist magazine that even Chris Hayes describes as "it's very explicitly on the radical left, and sort of hostile to liberal accommodationism. There’s a lot in there that I don’t necessarily agree with, but it’s bracingly rigorous and polemical in a really thought-provoking way. It’s a really well-done publication, almost preternaturally good" on Jacobin's About Us.

When Warren comes out and says she's a capitalist to her bones, and stands up and applauds Trump when he proclaims the US will never adopt socialist policies, there will be problems for many in the leftist tent. I think you asked if Sanders is also criticized by leftists? Unmercifully in camps of the anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist left. For Jacobin and the DSA, Sanders represents the best vehicle for more "radical change." Sanders is no radical on that count. He is a New Deal type of progressive who will try to go a bit further with reform than Warren. Neither are anti-capitalist or anti-imperialist on leftist grounds.
