Family connections can be complicated.

In 2004 I ran for office, for the State House in a Midwestern state. I did lose the election (very Republican district and I was running against a popular moderate Republican incumbent) but that's not the point. This is. Towards the end of the campaign my older brother, a die-hard Republican, came in to town to help my campaign. He did door-to-door campaigning, and what was nice was that he could say to householders, "I'm a Republican myself, and I'd vote for her." It helped. I got more votes than expected.

My younger sister, who lived in that district, also campaigned for me. It was extremely interesting how the close family connection helped sway voters.

Again, I did lose the election, but I did well enough that it was obvious to the Democratic party that the district was winnable, and they put a lot of resources into the election in 2006, and the man who ran for that seat won. Hooray! He also made a far better legislator than I would have, so I am very, very glad he won.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
