(10,922 posts)So, was at a Drinking Liberally meetup (which I highly recommend you google for one in your area) and the subject of electability came up.
Everyone agreed that the most important consideration in picking a nominee was who has the best chance to beat Trump.
Some, of course, had their favorites for different reasons.
But, most said that all things being equal, it would sure be great to have a female.
One woman, who had been drinking pretty liberally, bursts out with this:
Id like for us to nominate a half black, half Latina, bisexual Jewish midget.
With that, We determined it was time to wrap up the meeting.

(173 posts)polls have shown men reluctant to elect a female president because of the notion that the Commander in Chief needs to be "tough" (i.e., male). It's all about performance, of course, not innate qualities. Remember how G H W Bush had to tweak his campaign rhetoric to show he had sufficient testosterone?
At a gut level, I feel that Kamala Harris is the only female candidate who can win because she projects "toughness" in a way that the other candidates do not. I like Warren's record and policies better, but every once in a while she does this thing where she talks like a little girl and I think this will doom her as a candidate. Again, performance. She's one of the smartest candidates out there. Biden has historically been able to speak to white working class men better than most contemporary Democrats and can act tough, but neither Sanders nor O'Rourke are very strong in this area. But they benefit do benefit from being male and all the assumptions that go with that.

(173 posts)I used to get so mad about some of the stuff Obama put up with and remained so cool about. My black friends reminded me that if he responded like I wanted--and how we all felt was appropriate--he would suddenly become "an angry black man."

(12,344 posts)Sexism is not like other -isms.
Obama could make himself acceptable by never ever acting in accordance with stereotype. This is why he was always polite and calm, so as not to trigger any white snowflakes.
A woman can't do that. Tough women are always "bitchy" and gentle women are always "weak." Demonstrative women are always "emotional" and calm women are always "cold." There's never a way to avoid criticism. Unless she's perfect, but my wife isn't running
