Bernie, who rejected "identity politics", says he's likely to nominate woman as VP if he wins

Not all flip flops are bad.
I applaud Bernie for this change of tune.

He "rejects identity politics", because he ran against Hillary. And stated the obvious. That its the policies of the candidate that matter, not race, sex, religion, gender.... And he had a problem with Hillary's priorities and closeness with Wall Street. It wasn't that she was a woman. But the MSM has to pigeon hole him. So now, some Democrats take this as some kind of about face. lol. There are a few great women Democrats this time that he would be able to work with that don't share the Cllinton's third way philosophy. Simple as that. The press, and a few on here, want to make it into a black and white issue. Literally sometimes.

I kind of love how Bernie throws it back at his critics like this. They don't know what to do with this story other than pretend it proves he is some kind of original oddball. Guess what? We already knew that.

Of course he would consider a woman. It would also be in agreement with his previous statements about not choosing a running mate based on gender, but on issues and qualifications. Media trying to stir up clicks and controversy over completely reasonable things.

...a tough team to beat!

Your referenced Politico article was from 2016 during the 2016 primaries. Here is the first paragraph:

Bernie Sanders said Monday that the path to success for Democrats has to be through more than just identity politics, adding that it’s simply not enough for the party to base its appeals on diversity.

It is hardly a 'slam' on Civil Rights (i.e. id politics). But remember, that was in 2016 and the primaries and that is ancient history.

Bernie: ‘My Opponents’ Want Black, White, Gay, Latino or Women Candidates ‘Regardless of What They Stand For’

After the 2016 election, Sanders hit a similar theme when he told a crowd of supporters “It’s not good enough for somebody to say ‘hey I’m a Latina vote for me’ that is not good enough,” and went on to add “It is not good enough for somebody to say, ‘I’m a woman, vote for me.'”

Along with some differences over how to best get from point A to point B (such as how to get from the current health care system to a universal health care system). What Sanders and his supporters don't seem to understand is that they're cutting off their collective nose to spite their collective face. There is power in numbers, and if you want to bring about progressive policy, we first need to increase the number of Democrats in power. Logic 101, folks.

Colorblind racism is a real thing. Sanders and his supporters don't seem to realize or care that they often sound just like a Republican arguing against affirmative action when they talk about race, while promoting the bullshit narrative that other Dems only want to elect women and POC for the sake of electing women and POC. Not a single Democrat is making that argument, yet you wouldn't know it from many of the DU posts that argue Dems are doing just that. It's insulting and ignorant.

After the 2016 election, Sanders (at a post-election town hall in Wisconsin) helped push the notion that most Trump supporters aren't racist and that they're just driven by economic anxiety. And that Democrats talk too much about identity politics and not enough about economics. Never mind that both of those narratives have been proven false.

1) https://www.vox.com/identities/2017/12/15/16781222/trump-racism-economic-anxiety-study

2) https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2016/12/16/13972394/most-common-words-hillary-clinton-speech

And let's not forget his excusing those who aren't "comfortable" voting for a Black man.

In one breath, it's bashing identity politics. In the next breath, it's "let's talk about the white working class" ('cause, you know, white isn't an identity).

Sanders is essentially done after New Hampshire. The only question is, will he leave gracefully?
