If they STILL support Trump they are irredeemable. I do not care if they are offended by our disdain.
We will win by motivating the people who mostly agree with us but don't usually vote.

(31,261 posts)Many of them came back in 2018 and earlier special elections. I know at least two people who were democrats who did not vote in 2016 and now regret doing that. I pleaded with them but they did not listen in 2016 and now suffer the consequences.

(3,985 posts)2010 saw a lot of Dems skip the vote, too.
What is the root of such behavior? In your opinion.
I literally dragged people to the voting booth, some for their first vote.

(31,261 posts)People somehow convincing themselves that no President will make their situation better or worse. Those people tend to have a low empathy quotient, IMO, they can't visualize how others that don't have their priviledge can be hurt badly by their failure to vote, their world was ok, but in this case that conclusion turned out to be false. Their low EQ is why they don't respond to pleading and illustrations of why their position is wrong.

(31,261 posts)that still embrace hate. Those people that voted for Trump and realize that it was a mistake have ALREADY chosen to vote with us. Why do you think democrats did so well in House special elections and in 2018. We suffered a setback in the Senate but that was due more to republican cheating tactics (North Dakota and Florida) than our appeal.
I am willing to have a conversation with a MAGAT any day if that person sincerely wants to listen to and think about what I point out. Otherwise I prefer to spend time courting the 43% (almost half) of American voters who did not vote (although some of that number foolishly wrote in, but they will be clear during a conversation).

(3,985 posts)Never sacrifice your principles or even your chose choice of words.
No one is more upset about the state of affairs, trust me.
This anger and disgust is palpable; however, it is harmful to our well-being. When we are moved to devolve to their level of hate & hatefulness, they are winning.
I work hard everyday to cleanse my body, mind, spirit from the negativity being thrown at us. Meditation really helps.
I refuse to let the haters win over my personal inner peace I have worked really hard to attain.
I won't give them that victory, never, ever. They aren't that powerful! Seriously, look at them. Are they powerful enough to rob you of your peace & kindness?
So, if you are hating, take back your power!
We can win this!

I hate to hate. I told myself to stay off of here to give myself a little breather. Here I go again.
I wish to explain myself. If I'm a bore just ignore.
Lately I've found myself wishing the most damaging things on the people I see at Trump rallies. As a person living in a deeply red state Oklahoma. I feel like someone behind enemy lines for sometime now. Maybe even behind some iron curtain in regards to information
This is one of the reasons in it's conception DU has been a good source of information and differing opinions. I never thought of joining before. Then I had second thoughts. Maybe if I joined and some people from Oklahoma just peeked in would see. To see they are not alone and not put into the same basket as deplorables.
I have little or no respect for people that attend the rallies. I dare call them people. I know they are not human beings. They lack humanity. They have become intoxicated with the propaganda of Trump and the ugliness promoted by the Republican party.
This isn't new. It's just reformation of something they always believed. Trump's not a genius, he's an opportunist. He's been that his whole life. The Republican party plowed that field, planted the seeds and Trump is reaping what they sowed.
Sometimes I think people think that kindness is weakness. Please don't ever mistake mine for weakness.
Just think about nature. In nature plants and animals that are intolerant (cannot adapt to change) Sooner or later they become extinct.
They might be people after all. People that following along giddily to Trump's hate filled and cult like messages. They are not human beings. Humanity is lacking in them. Reach out to the human beings. Hang on to each other. Tight. Hate is hard on you, it defeats humanity. I'm not against going for the jugular when necessary. We can be forceful without being hate filled. We can reach out to the reachable, but for some of those critters my arms just ain't that long. Peace to you my friend.

(3,985 posts)I keep to myself mostly.
Please forgive me, but I must caution against catorgorizing inhumane people as "not human beings"
Dehumanization of the "other" regardless of how inhumane their behavior may be has been the root cause or justification for genocide.
We have been dehumanized by Fox Et Al for decades.
We don't know the last act of this horrendous drama, but please join me & others and hang onto every vestige of our own humanity.
Hold onto our power even in the face of evil & hatred.
Not easy, but inner peace is our heaven on earth we create.
Thank you for your thoughtful response. ✨🙏✨

(95 posts)You're forgiven.
I'm not suggesting genocide, bet they would do that to us. Although you might be surrounded by well- educated blind followers. I'm surrounded by a bunch of gun toting uneducated people. They talk about wishing they could shoot them queers like they did in the old days. In the Church pews. Almost every sign along a 20 mile stretch to Town is littered with bullet holes. We are bullied by the majority party in this state. Democrat is code for baby killers and N**er lovers, anti- God ect ect.....
When I say lacking humanity I mean, not having compassion, lacking empathy and a ability to walk in someone else's shoes.
Now I might have taken it bit far. I'm so angry about what's going on I could spit nickels. I also know that many of them, not all of them, are like me. They really don't mean it and would never intentionally hurt anyone.
I'll give it some thought. I get kinda carried away in my writings. I wondered often and asked the Preacher man. "Where's all this hate and persecuting coming from?" "From a man that preached unconditional love?" He assured me he doesn't do that kind of preaching, but he does.

I want to see the South rise again. Just maybe not the way a lot of people visualize it. I want better schools for this state. I want this state to stop locking so many people up. For a state that rest on the bible belt. They are anti feeding the hungry or providing health care for it's citizens. I mean why bother educating them. They can get that education once they're incarcerated. THey are ignorant by design. It's one of the ways they keep them in this constant circle of poverty. They need reasons to be hopeful. They cannot until they get rid of their "Confederacy mentality"

(2,227 posts)just doesn't get it with me.
We are extremely angry. We are over the top outraged.
This country is going down the tubes because the democrats always come across as nothing but milquetoast. Our democratic leaders, apparently, don't have the passion to put across our facts and information in a way that includes that anger and outrage.
We CAN chew gum and walk.
Americans are tired of the same old crap. That is why "one party is just like the other" sticks so easily.
We, the base, feel the passion. But our leaders refuse to present it.
Adam Schiff said it well, but with rare exception, he sounded like he was reading a prepared statement from a children's book.
We need to see fire in our leaders eyes, and hear it in their voices.
You can be damned sure you will see and hear both as the republicans lie and cheat. But, hell, they do it so convincingly that a large portion of Americans believe them.
And until we inject the fire, no one will listen.

(128,856 posts)Um no. Only their 35% "believes them". Poll after poll after poll establishes that. What is more accurate is that a "large portion of Americans" are just not engaged in politics. At all. They have tuned it out because they have a life and/or other issues/worries to attend to.
And I would perhaps separate "fire" from "charisma" because the former often devolves into angry and near-unhinged rants. Alternately, having charisma is a trait that is preferable but rare because such an individual can express "fire" as needed, but can also express "empathy" as well, without sounding like a "fire-breathing" lunatic who assumes anyone not accepting their methods of engagement shouldn't be walking the earth. A characterization of "milquetoast" (with the insinuation that they are automatically "weak" ) to anyone not coming in to burn the house down is just ridiculous. It seems a number of the burn-the-house-down types end up all talk with little to show for an end game beyond being perpetually "angry", which is something the other side does with relish, and they miss the boat by not seeking some practical (vs "slogan" ) application for their views, including enactment of a legislative remedy.
What really needs to happen is to have the strategy be a relay, where the firebrands capture the attention of the public but then agree to hand off to those who can actually put the ideas into writing and get them implemented. The "writers" and "implementers" tend to be the "milquetoast"/"wonk" types but they know what they are doing and how to effectively do it, and to eschew them and insult them is essentially suicide for any movement whose goal is to bring about meaningful change.

(6,810 posts)Dude was cranked-out on meth when he was pulled over, claiming he was on his way to meet with Trump so he could get his orders to kill people.
Well-intentioned as OP was trying to be getting people to ease up on their comments about the incident, they themselves stepped on a rake implying that this guy being on meth (he told the cops he was on meth and that he told them that was included in reporting on the incident) was analogous to the mentally ill. Two separate conditions. It was offensive to equate them. I find this thread is ironic.

(2,412 posts)Hate cannot be our banner. We need to present a Democratic Party Platform that shows people we are on their side. This needs to be firmed up yesterday. And yes, no more hate and put downs on DU please!!!! The people who voted for Trump have been shafted for decades by Neoliberal Austerity and they are rightfully tired of being poor. They wanted a better life for their families but they were let down by our leaders. They paid their taxes but most of the money was spent on war and military bases all around the world. (4,999 posts)Do I believe some fraction of the 40% are never going to understand reality. I sure do.
But what I believe even more than that is that a significant portion of that 40% want the same things we do (good jobs, affordable health care, ...), but were, and still are misinformed by the media. We need to help them understand reality, which can only happen if first we don't poison the message by saying they are all #$%&'s.
We need every vote we can get, and that starts with understanding, and reaching out. Saying they are *all* idiots is just using our anger against us.
Thank you.
