What is Sanders great plan to win over Mississippi white voters which he makes sound easy? Black voters overwhemingly vote Democrat. It's the white population to win over. According to him the hard work local officials in the party do is very bad work. Republican officials don't try to win over black voters. They supress votes for God's sake. It's a state that is near the top on dependency from the federal government. A lot of red states are. Why doesn't he criticize Republicans for their very bad work rather than blaming Democrats?

I have an idea what his solution is. Do what every democrat he's trashing does and put forward programs that get rejected for identity reasons by the larger voting bloc because that's the nature of Deep South politics.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

This is a misstatement or a misreading or both.

First of all saying the other 90% are not racist means by his definition there is no racist white person in Mississippi.

That is not what he's saying at all. What he's saying is that some part of that 90% is not racist. Maybe of that 90% that voted for the other candidate 30 or 40% were not racist but just thought the other candidate was better. That could still mean that 60 or 70% were racist. It isn't saying none of them were racist.
If I were to vote in a presidential

Joe Biden

He’s not saying that NONE off the 90% were racist; he’s saying that NOT ALL of them are racist, and therefore SOME of them were gettable votes (presumably if a “real” Democrat came along)

Also stating that one believes 90% of white people in Mississippi are not racist by no definition whatsoever means there are no racist white people there.

What is Bernie's great plan to win over Mississippi you ask?

It's not my responsibility nor does it make any sense for me to include full quotes of entire chunks of speeches every time I reference comments by a politician. I provide the information in the Opie. If people don't bother to use it, that's on them.

But that said the full quote is just as bad as the excerpt. The portion that you seem to think cleans up his comment does nothing of the kind. The entire comment is tone deaf and stupid. Hearing it in its entirety only makes that clearer.

So 16.62% of 227,164-which is the total number of votes cast for Dem candidates in the primary. Bernie got 37,748 votes. Repukes had 416,270 primary votes cast. Estimated 2016 total number of eligible voters-2,988,726. Under 30% voter turnout. Sad.

Jan 2020

....voted for Obama (he didn't say the year, but it was 2012) and then he follows with "90% of the white people in Mississippi are not racist"!!!??? He clearly hasn't spent much time studying the history of race relations in Mississippi.

Mississippi is the state where Emmett Till was tortured and murdered, and to this day his memorial is defaced periodically.
Mississippi is the state where Medgar Evers murdered.
Mississippi is the state where Chaney, Schwerner, and Goodman were murdered.

Plus, Sanders didn't live in a rent controlled apartment for the first 18 years of his life. Brooklyn didn't have rent control in 1941, it spread from Manhattan to the boroughs in the mid-to-late 1940s.

The fact that he lived in one (if he did) for some years later isn't a measure of his family's economic state. Tenants in rent controlled apartments weren't reviewed annually or periodically with respect to economics, and many weren't in rent controlled apartments simply because they were "poor". Rent control was implemented by building, not apartment. There always were relatively affluent people living under "rent control". Once in a rent controlled apartment one could not be evicted or have the rent control withdrawn.

I remember back in the 1970s a friend of mine was an executive of Xerox Corporation. He used to brag about how he lived in a rent controlled apartment on the East Side, paying ~ $120 per month, despite making over $60,000. The landlord could only raise the rent if he moved and they got a new tenant. Because of that many people STAYED in rent controlled apartments even if they could afford much more expensive apartments.

Thanks for the video.

As long as she or someone in his immediate family occupies the apartment, the rent can't go up beyond a very limited range until he moves (which ain't going to happen) or he dies.

And then a year later the building went co-op, I could have bought my apartment for an "insider" price, almost half the market price, which in 1985 was still pretty low.

Total votes cast 2012 pres election in state- 1,285,584. So approx 36% of eligible voters voted. Whites make up @ 59% of population, blacks-@ 37%. Which leaves @ 64% of voters who did not vote. Demographics indicate they would be primarily white. A minority of white voters selected Romney. Does BS have a plan to get voters who don't show up to vote? Because that is a real issue. Not that Barack supposedly only got 10% of white votes. White voters fail themselves by not showing up to vote. As for racism-historically racist isn't it?

Racist or not, the vast, vast majority of white voters in Mississippi vote Republican. And yes, I think it is absolutely believable that 4% of white voters in Mississippi didn't vote for Obama because of racism.

Amazingly, Obama actually got 43% of the vote in Mississippi despite such a poor showing with white voters. The problem is, the white vote is so heavily skewed Republican right now that I don't think any Democrat, black or white, could ever get that last 7%.
