Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumBased on this forum, it seems like no Dem can win.
Reading through this forum, I get the impression nobody is really confident that Democrats can beat Trump.
The Pro-Biden side keeps saying Bernie will have one of the biggest losses in history and Trump would absolutely love to run against him and some Republicans are backing him too. His Socialism and anti-corporate views will be used against him.
The Pro-Sanders side says Biden is too pro-rich, pro-corporate oligarchs, too anti-young people. Biden is another status quo candidate who will make the rich richer, screw over the young and the poor, and probably let Trump and all his corrupt cronies get away with their crimes for the sake of bipartisanship and letting the past stay in the past. Biden also has the most baggage of any current candidate and Ukraine is absolutely going to be used against Biden no matter how dumb it is.
The Pro-Warren crowd is currently fighting with the Bernie Crowd. Right now, I see her and Bernie splitting the progressive and youth vote, leading to a Biden win.
I feel like we're likely going to see another Trump win in light of the current situation. I hope I'm wrong, but he's got a cult base of supporters, the entire Republican party backing him, tons of cheating, social media giants like Facebook backing him, and a bunch of foreign countries helping him. And the rest of the population either can't support a certain Democrat, or just doesn't plan on voting.

(10,052 posts)and has no place in this election, it is too important to throw up your hands, do what you can to support your candidate and whichever one wins. It is so important to beat Trump as your country cannot survive another 4 years.

TwilightZone
(25,471 posts)It's a niche website that's representative of nothing more than its members. What goes on here has little impact on the campaign. In the real world, the vast majority of Democrats and a likely majority of Independents will rally behind the Democratic nominee and vote accordingly in November. If the turnout is similar to 2018, we'll do fine.
As for the infighting, every primary cycle is like this. 2008 was markedly worse, plenty of people said Obama couldn't win for reasons and Clinton couldn't win for reasons, yet Obama went on to win the presidency and his rival became his SoS.

Many are really bright.
And, when we have a bunch of really bright people debating the merits of their candidate and the detriments of all the others, it is bound to be a bit discouraging.
But Twilight Zone is right. Most people don't even think about who is president, or about the presidential election until around October.
Lots of Americans are disgusted with Trump, so we'll see how it all plays out.

If Trump skates on impeachment and does his I am perfect tour who knows what we will all do?
I would gladly take any dem and I wish we werent fighting but every candidate wants to win and showing why they are better is how they normally do it. Unfortunately the way they show it is to point out the others faults. I hate that part.
I like both Bernie and Warren and feel like the moderates are winning by splitting us.

(2,657 posts)Some horses win, some horses lose, and most people spend a lot of time talking about who will win, who will lose, and why things will or won't happen. We could come here and all post pretty pictures and talk about how great our favorite candidate is, but we would not learn very much doing that. One of about 12 candidates is going to be the nominee, and we better figure out who should or should not be the nominee before next summer. The whole reason why the Primary Season is so long is so that we have lots of time to discuss things with others. I believe that when it is crystal clear who the nominee is, about 90% of this will disappear right away.
Do I think Joe Biden has twice as much chance as beating Trump as Bernie Sanders does? Yes, I do. However, if Bernie Sanders wins the nomination, will I think he will be 1000 times better than Trump? Yes, I will. I can think that my candidate is way better than someone else's and still remember that they are both much better than Trump. What I don't understand is why we keep having to explain this to people. I've been on the internet for 25 years, and before that, I was on AOL, and Prodigy, and Compuserve, and computer BBS systems. I was posting stuff on bulletin boards in the mid-1980s. It is always the same. People get into arguments about everything you can imagine. Yet, I will tell you this. It was the people who I fought with the most who taught me the most. Also, the people who gave me the toughest arguments were some of the smartest people that I ever ran into.
I am not afraid of arguing with people. I will only be afraid when people stop arguing, and when all people ever do is say friendly things to each other. America's Got Talent only works because someone is willing to say the painful truth, no matter whose feelings are hurt. When you are in a battle of wits with someone, and you come up with a brilliant comeback, do you sign off and swear off computers, never to come back, or to you keep checking to see if they responded?
We're not in nursery school. People who cannot handle disagreement can simply leave. Everyone knows that during the primary season, this group is the fiercest group on the whole board. Do you know who the most convincing people are when it comes to choosing someone to vote for? It is the people who have had every argument there is about every candidate. Every time they have an argument, their defenses get better, their thinking gets better, their reasoning gets better.
As I mentioned earlier, I am not afraid of arguments. I am only afraid of living in a society where arguments never occur. When that happens, it means that The Stepford Wives, the Replicants, or the Androids have taken over. Or it means that we are living in the former Soviet Union. Do not be afraid of arguing. Instead, simply concentrate on learning how to argue well and on learning how to win an argument without getting too insluting or fighting too dirty. That's because, if you can only win an argument by being insulting or fighting dirty, you don't really deserve to win, and sooner or later, everyone will figure that out.

(2,657 posts)1. Everyone is fighting with everyone.
2. If we keep fighting with each other, Trump will win!
Here are some things to keep in mind.
1. Debate is necessary in politics.
2. A lot of people are not very good at debating because they don't do it enough.
3. DU is the tiniest of fractions of the entire internet and odds are that nothing that we do here, by itself, will cause any candidate to win or lose. Because of this, everyone can relax a bit.
4. Every group of campaign supporters has brilliant people, average people, and stupid people. I find it is best to figure out who the smartest people are in each camp and to try to chat mostly with them. The people who are willing to back up the say with proof, those are the people that I like to talk to. The people who mostly post a thousand versions of "You are so wrong!" or insult you have no proof at all and don't know what they are talking about. The most interesting people on message boards are not really trying so hard to persuade people to their point of view as they are interested in learning new things.
Joe Biden is my chosen candidate. If you can show me something new about him, and it is true, as is not exaggerated, then I am interested, whether it is good or bad. If you tell me something about Joe Biden that is not true or is largely exaggerated, then I do not care what it is, whether it sounds good or not.
You are not going to win someone over to your camp by posting stuff that is exaggerated. The Internet exists. It is too easy to check if something is exaggerated. Once you start posting stuff that is exaggerated, people will stop listening to you, and your words will have little effect.
5. Pay attention to how carefully someone reads what you wrote. If they never seem to be reading what you are writing, don't insult them, just stop responding to them. Maybe they are tired. Maybe they are angry. Maybe they are using an Ipad and are currently getting dialysis at the hospital. You never know. However, you don't have to keep writing to someone who really is not paying attention to what you are saying. If they are not paying attention to what you are saying, then they really do not care enough about what you are saying, or they really are not capable of paying attention, so why bother interacting with them?
6. Keep telling yourself this:
My best days on DU are when:
1. I can make someone feel good about themselves.
2. I can teach someone something new.
3. I can make a new friend.
4. I learn something new.
7. People are stubborn. You will never convince everyone here of any one thing, let alone several things. Your goal should never be to persuade a million people of anything. Your goal should be to concentrate on people one at a time and really connect with them.
The more that you do that, the more interesting your writing will be, and the more that people will want to read what you write.
8. Few things make you a better writer than practice. Few things make it easier for you to convince people of things, to make people laugh, to learn how to laugh yourself, and to truly understand pretty much anything than writing about it. Without writing, there are no movies, no plays, no musicals, no books, no magazines, no record of human history, or animal history, or any history at all. Without writing, there is no mathematics, no astronomy, no science of any kind and no art of any kind other than say, cave person paintings, as well as no diaries, no journals, and no songs.
9. So come here and write what you think, and be as polite as you can get yourself to be. Yet, do not be afraid. Odds are, nothing that you write here will cause the earth to swivel off its axis into the sun, and nothing you say here will, by itself, will cause Donald Trump to win or lose.

(1,701 posts)The vast number of voters who don't like Trump are highly motivated to vote against him, even if their favored candidate does not win the nomination. One of the valuable things about this too-long primary process is that it alerts people who may not pay much attention to politics to how serious our problems are, and how dangerous Trump is.
