Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumIf the 2020 election is a referendum on Trump, we will win in a landslide
But if Trump manages to make it a referendum on socialism, we will lose.
Keep that in mind when voting for a nominee.
The *ONLY* way Trump wins is if he successfully makes the election a referendum on anything but him.

(115,186 posts)Here's how I see it playing out. He'll walk on impeachment, and sell that as exoneration and accuse Dems of unfair prosecution.
He'll respond to attacks on his record with the usual lies and bluster, and counter with smears about how 'corrupt' our candidate is, claiming we are attacking him for things we actually do. He'll hammer on hypocrisy and bothsideism and count on utter disgust to dampen turnout. There is nothing he won't use to smear our candidate, whether factual or not.
Remember, most voters aren't that clued in. The media - for the most part - can be trusted to portray the back and forth in a way that casts Trump as a victim or even as if he's correct. They get ratings and revenue having him in office.
Not looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.

(2,706 posts)All second elections are a referendum on the incumbent. And they find him largely unacceptable.
It only becomes a choice if the democratic nominee is also largely unacceptable.
Biden is not unacceptable.

(30,275 posts)It says 70% of Americans not only want tRump impeached, they want him removed from office. I don't think that 70% is going to forgive an acquittal.

(5,961 posts)That's super simplistic, but true.
Farmers care whether he will get the EPA off their backs and improve their prospects of exporting crops and meat to places like China. West Virginians know their state is dirt poor, and want to know how ending coal mining and fracking for gas possibly helps that. Small business owners don't see the benefits of having to pay a $15 minimum wage. People in towns where the manufacturing left back in the 80s, or the 90s, or the early 2000s want to know how globalization benefited them. A generation is saddled with student loan debt that is crippling. The government is spending at huge deficits in a time of relative prosperity - why?
We need to make this about solving the problems typical Americans face. We need to make this about delivering better outcomes with smarter and more honest leadership.
