Related: About this forumBernie Sanders to charter private jet to campaign in Iowa during impeachment
Link to tweet
Sanders, one of the 2020 Democratic front-runners, is chartering at least one private jet for the duration of the trial to take him to and from Iowa without the delays incurred from flying commercial.
Sanders should have more than enough dough to afford the luxurious method of transportation he raised $34.5 million in the final quarter of 2019 and brought in $96 million over the course of the entire year.
Despite this, his campaign has declined to comment to multiple news outlets, including The Post, about his jet use.
The campaign feels uncomfortable disclosing the Vermont senators use of a private jet to the media, mostly due to fears of the optics of a far-left populist being seen using such an exclusive form of travel, people close to Sanders team tell the Washington Examiner.

"In 1997 and 1998, Sanders did indeed support a measure that gave Congressional approval to an arrangement that would have allowed the states of Maine and Vermont to transport and dispose of nuclear waste at a proposed site in the sparsely populated town of Sierra Blanca in Hudspeth County, close to the Mexican border in West Texas.
As the meme suggests, Sierra Blanca was (and is) a predominantly Latino community. U.S. Census Bureau records show that in 2000, two years after the proposal, 73 percent of the towns 533 residents identified as Hispanic or Latino, and almost all of those as Mexican. In 2016, some 69 percent of Sierra Blancas 557 residents identified as Hispanic or Latino."
"According to a September 1998 article in the Texas Observer, a group of activists opposed to the Sierra Blanca waste site approached Sanders at an anti-nuclear weapons rally in Vermont that year:
Sanders left the stage, which surprised no one in the small Texas delegation. Earlier, he had told them, My position is unchanged, and youre not gonna like it. When they asked if they would visit the site in Sierra Blanca, he said, Absolutely not. Im gonna be running for re-election in the state of Vermont.
Sorry again...the convenience thing...you don't get to dump your states nuclear waste on a poor Hispanic community without having your Perfect Green card revoked. Walk the Walk.

(20,709 posts)The GND, drilling, fracking, Keystone XL, fossil fuel subsidies, clean air and water, across the board he's been stronger on climate and environment than anyone in the field (Steyer maybe, but he doesn't have a record).
There's a reason why Bernie is the candidate of the left, and that's because his views and record are actually to the left of the more centrist candidates. That includes on the environment. It's not surprising that he's been more pro-environment and that his proposals are more aggressive. That can be a good or bad thing -- not all voters are leftists, even in the primary. And there are arguments that can and have been made against his aggressive environmentalism, like fracking for natural gas is a transition source of energy, or his version of GND would cost too much, or whatever.
But trying to argue that he's not as strong on the environment as more centrist pols like Pelosi or Biden just doesn't make sense.

(68,552 posts)not something an environmentalist should or would be part of...in one of the great ironies...opponents tried to talk to him at an environmental rally in Vermont and were strongly rebuffed...also, there is evidence that Sander profited from this. Jane Sanders served as an alternate commissioner...the term expired in 2019/ We know from the 2014 tax return she still drew a salary in 14 in fact.
So sorry, Sanders supports the environment when it is convenient...and flying off on a private plane to campaign is yet another example of this.
"The Sanders have partially released their 2014 tax return and on the return, Jane Sanders is still drawing a salary as an alternate commissioner for the Texas Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Compact Commission. (TLLRWD Commissioner)"

If you look at positions that pols have taken, voting records, and so on, the Bernie is going to be to the left of people like Biden and Pelosi, which includes being "stronger" on the environment in the sense of advocating for policies that would protect the environment more.

Pelosi is a more effective politician in the conventional sense of wheeling and dealing in Congress, counting votes, and so on. That's part of why she was able to rise to be speaker. (68,552 posts)you know what that means... for the supposed champion of the little guy to try to send dangerous nuclear waste to a poor Texas community while his wife sat on the board and drew a paycheck is just plain wrong. This is not disputed. As for Nancy she is consistent...
Pelosi has supported the development of new technologies to reduce U.S. dependence upon foreign oil and remediate the adverse environmental effects of burning fossil fuels.[142] Pelosi has widely supported conservation programs and energy research appropriations. She has also voted to remove an amendment that would allow for oil and gas exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.[143][144]
Pelosi has blocked efforts to revive offshore oil drilling in protected areas, reasoning that offshore drilling could lead to an increase in dependence on fossil fuels.[145]
Also, without her support there would have been no Green deal pass the House.

(20,709 posts)It's obvious, not really even controversial. The very fact that you have to go back to some dispute over where to put nuclear waste in the 90s shows this. That's not even an environment issue per se -- the waste is going somewhere, it's just a question of where. It's not like you could find an example of him waffling on fossil fuel subsidies or fracking or whatever.
Not saying Pelosi is bad, just Bernie is better, in the sense of pushing harder for more aggressive action. E.g., the plan in his platform is the boldest of any candidate.

Just like nobody rational thinks that Biden tried to get that prosecutor removed in order to enrich his son.

But since Biden and Bernie voted exactly the same way, it doesn't matter in terms of comparing their environmental records. Because, you know, they both voted for the same thing. I guess I should also point out, since this whole thread started with a smear against Bernie for flying in a private jet, that Biden and the rest of the candidates also fly in private jets. So that one's out too.
As far as the $5000 "payday", that is truly a joke. Ya think maybe Bernie and Biden decided to split the moolah and then Biden paid him back with half the Burisma money? Would have worked out pretty well for Bernie, since the Burisma money was 100 times bigger. Come on, now, this is nuts. If this is the best anti-Bernie smear you can find, then it's gonna be smooth sailing.

The jet would be on the tarmac and anyone who wants it could use it. Unfortunately, due to the tragedy of the commons, the jet would likely be in such disrepair that it wouldn't be able to fly. That, or more likely those in power, like Bernie, would using it exclusively while we took the bus.

(31,261 posts)If a person comes up with a mind-blowing idea, that person likely will make lots of money if he or she manages the public disclosure and delivery of products if that idea right. What is such a person supposed to do, put intellectual capital and resources into developing an idea, then give it away so as to not to become a billionaire? The concept that billionaires should not exist is inherently foolish, more emphasis should be placed on HOW a person became a billionaire, some people get there through fair dealing and hard work, many through loopholes, lying and cheating, so we develop means of dealing with the second while expecting the first to pay his or her fair share of taxes to keep society running.

(13,058 posts)That's fine. But his stance on billionaires has nothing to do with eliminating private property. Bernie is a property owner himself.

(31,261 posts)The amount of valuable property that people own, whether it be businesses, or patents that trace to intellectual discoveries relate directly to how wealthy those people become. So, my point is that it is impossible to not have billionaires and one day in the future, a trillionaire or two.
Why a trillionaire? Anyone that comes up with a full cycle clean energy technology, or figures out how to efficiently remove populting gases from effluent streams going into the air, is going to become very, very rich. The reason why the person or people did what they did may not be wealth (and that would likely be one of the least driving forces), but their intellectual property is going to be very valuable, like gold and diamonds combined on steroids.

(13,058 posts)Should I go back 50 years to see what I can get on Biden? Bernie is not advocating confiscating property or assets but he does support making the rich pay their fair share. This tactic of going back years looking for a gotcha moment is not helpful and it smacks of desperation.

(145,130 posts)I have been working really hard with a large number of real Democrats to turn Texas blue. We have made a great deal of progress and if Biden is the nominee, Texas will be a battleground state. After the 2010 election, there was 101 republicans in the Texas house compared to 49 Democrats. We flipped 12 state house seats in 2018 and now need just nine more seats to control the Texas house and control redistricting. Texas is scheduled to pick up 3 additional congressional seats and so that it is very important to win control of the Texas state house.
Right now, I am helping on a special election race where Joe Biden endorsed Eliz Markowitz who is a great Democrat.
Link to tweet
I voted for Eliz yesterday and I saw Beto out greeting the crowd and taking pictures. Beto has been amazing for this race
Link to tweet
As Beto noted, if Texas is blue, no republican will be able to win the Electoral Collage.
In 2018, we flipped two congressional seats (Lizzie Fletcher and Colin Allred) and the DCCC has targeted 6 or 7 additional seats to flip (DCCC just added TX CD2 to the list). I have donated to several of the races and will be working voter protection for my part of the state. Two of the candidates in CD 2 and CD 22 are friends who I am working to elect.
Having a weak candidate like sanders on the top of the ticket would kill down ballot races. If sanders is the nominee, we can forget about flipping control of the Texas House and Lizzie and Colin are in danger.
sanders has shown extremely poor judgement in going negative on Warren and Biden and in hiring persons like Sirota and some stein voters. A vote for Jill Stein was a vote for trump.
I am very aware of what is going on. I just want to beat trump and do not want to see Lizzie and Colin voted out of office due to a very bad candidate who has very poor judgment. I have reflected long and hard what is good for our nation and my state. You may be comfortable with supporting a weak candidate who would kill down ballot candidates. I am not.

Common Cause against a Sanders affiliated group, not against the Sanders campaign or against Bernie personally. This sort of things is very common and it's usually settled as a civil matter.

(13,058 posts)When the FEC filed a campaign finance complaint against the Hillary Clinton campaign on October 25, 2017 they treated it as a civil matter and the campaign eventually paid a fine. That is usually how these matters are litigated. Many campaigns and groups that support campaigns run afoul of campaign finance laws at one time or another. It's not such a big deal.
