https://t.co/clptd7Irbi" target="_blank">New York TimesDES MOINES Hillary Clinton said on Friday in a podcast interview that Senator Bernie Sanders and his supporters did not do enough to unify the Democratic Party after the prolonged 2016 primary, calling the behavior of his supporters distressing and saying it affected the general election.
All the way up until the end, a lot of people highly identified with his campaign were urging people to vote third party, urging people not to vote, Mrs. Clinton said in an interview with Emily Tisch Sussman for her podcast Your Primary Playlist. It had an impact.
Mrs. Clinton also drew a sharp distinction between her efforts in 2008 to bring the party together after her bruising primary battle with Barack Obama and the efforts by Mr. Sanders in 2016: Night and day, she said.

(11,605 posts)I still like him, and will of course support him if he gets the nomination. But I was very disappointed in the way he conducted himself in the month after the California primary. He waited way too long to concede and endorse Hillary, and then it felt like he was pretty half-hearted about it. Hillary deserved the same full-throated support that she gave to Obama in 2008, and I was disappointed in Bernie for not doing more to get his supporters on board and dispel false beliefs among many of his supporters that she only got the nomination because of superdelegates (and other false beliefs that she did not get the nomination legitimately).

Hillary lost because the DNC and her campaign neglected the ground game in the rust belt.

(10,499 posts)The DNC is an impotent, toothless organization that couldn't sabotage a campaign to save their lives.
The emails they are referring to, provided by Vladimir Putin, showed DNC officials anticipating that HRC would be the presumptive nominee based on what the voters had chosen to do at the polls. The spin that they showed a conspiracy is exactly the kind of bad behavior that Hillary was talking about.
Hillary rallied her troops around Obama, and his candidacy, in the run up to the convention and during it. Bernie stayed in the race for a month after the voting ended, and his delegates were demanding that he be given the nominee, over the will of the voters, at the convention. They even disrupted convention speeches with their chanting, including repeated attempts to upstage Hillary.
They simply refused to accept the legitimacy of their defeat, and to this day continue to do so.

(11,605 posts)And this is the biggest reason I am not supporting Bernie in the primaries this time around. I don't exactly regret supporting him in 2016, because I think his candidacy raised important issues and he proved that it is possible to raise enough money without giving a disproportionate audience to corporate lobbyists and wealthy donors, which I think is important. But I was disappointed in the way he behaved after the voting was over, and I really feel that Hillary deserved better from him, especially because she was a class act after she lost to Obama in 2008.

(10,499 posts)She actually did make a campaign stop in Minnesota.
And she didn't hold a rally in Wisconsin because she was leading by double digits. Bernie went there for the same reason that Chelsea did--if a candidate isn't planning a rally in a certain state, or area, then they send their top surrogates. So obviously Bernie was going to be sent there if she wasn't planning a rally of her own.
Holding an event or two, or even five, would not have changed the outcome of Wisconsin. She campaigned ferociously in Pennsylvania, with more rallies than any other state (in a tie with FL and OH), but still lost there. She didn't really lose because of a badly run campaign, no matter what the media now claims. She lost because James Comey and the FBI set out to destroy her. They were never going to let her win.

And it ignores her advertising and large ground operation in Wisconsin.
So in the run up to the general HRC did not hold rallies in a state where she was leading by double digits. That is not unheard of. When Donald Trump finally thought he could win, because of the Comey intervention, the first thing he did was cancel an appearance in Wisconsin.
Making campaign stops in Wisconsin would not have changed the outcome of the election, or even that state. She lost there, along with other battleground states she had been previously favored to win, because of James Comey's antics.

(25,128 posts)"Among the most unjust consequences of Sanders's branding Clinton as an establishment tool was the effect on young African Americans. Their parents -- particularly their mothers -- were virtually solid in their support for Clinton, and that wasn't the result of her racial 'pandering' (as Trump later suggested) but rather Hillary's quiet, steady work, over decades, on issues of 'kitchen-table' importance to black families and the relationships she built with black leaders. This history was either unknown to or ignored ... ; Clinton 'has to be willing to get out of what's comfortable and get on the streets,' said one obviously ignorant of the fact that at the age of twenty-four, Hillary had been a civil rights activist who went undercover to investigate the discrimination in public schools. Hillary was also the first candidate to pay attention to the Flint, Michigan water crisis ... .
"But like Clinton's work on LGBTQ issues, decades old rather than campaign inspired, none of this made it into flashy stories headlining her lifelong commitment to racial, gender, and sexual justice. Instead, we were teated to a huge media flap over a mistake she made, misdescribing Nancy Reagan as fighting for AIDS research (when it was quite the opposite). Sanders made sure that '1994 Come Bill' and 'super predator' defined Clinton on racial issues, especially for those active in the Black Lives Matter movement who were influential in shaping the perception of other young black Americans.
"In fact, Sanders himself, along with many black leaders, had voted for the crime bill ... She also apologized profusely for using the 'super predator' label, even though in her speech it was not aimed at African American youth but the dealers who exploited them. ... But for too many millennials, both black and white, '1994 Crime Bill' and 'super predator' said all one needed to about Clinton. Some spoke as though she was personally responsible for the spike in mass incarceration that was a consequence of her husband's bill. 'She was part of the whole problem that started sending blacks to jail,' a young black man from Ohio observed."

When It Comes to Losing Ugly, Bernie Has Nothing on Hillary
The Democratic primary could be worse: It could be 2008 all over again.
By JEET HEER
May 18, 2016 Add to Pocket
The 2016 primaries were supposed to be smooth sailing for Democrats, in contrast to the free-for-all on the Republican side. Instead, the GOP has a presumptive nominee while Hillary Clinton continues to be dogged by Bernie Sanders, who, despite having almost no chance of winning the nomination, refuses to suspend his campaign. The animosity between the campaigns reached new heights after Saturdays rowdy Nevada Democratic convention, where some Sanders supporters made death threats against party officials; Sanders later released an unapologetic statement that said the Democratic leadership used its power to prevent a fair and transparent process from taking place. Some party leaders now worry that the Vermont senator will destroy Democrats chances of holding on to the White House, by tarring the likely nominee with accusations of corruption and cheating.
But there is no reason to panic. After all, the Democratic primaries were much nastier in 2008, and yet the party won the White House. As Dan Pfeiffer, a former senior advisor to President Barack Obama who was a top campaign official in 2008, tweeted on Wednesday:
Dan Pfeiffer

(2,706 posts)Im the last one to vote for Sanders. Id even vote Tulsi over him.
But she really has zero grounds to complain. I remember 2008. That election was OVER long before she finally conceded. Yet she continued with a scheme to get Florida and Michigan to count, or sway super delegates to vote for her instead. And the PUMAS were a vocal group doing the same thing sanders supporters did.
The difference was the PUMAS were a smaller group. Obama was a better unifier.
And after finally conceding, she did work hard for his election. No matter why she did, the truth is she worked hard.
But this complaining over 2016 sounds more like sour grapes now. We NEED everyone on board. Biden and the others can defend themselves. Hillary getting involved is only going to reopen old wounds. See the many threads here as evidence.
Its not like her campaign didnt make mistakes too. Not to mention Comey and Russia.
We need to STOP with the divisive stuff.
Sanders will win or lose on merit. Personally, I think its going to be lose.

(143,999 posts)Normally going to a national convention is a once in a life time experience. I have worked really hard inside the party on campaigns and voter protection issues for a very long time to earn this trip. Too bad that sanders and his vetted delegates ruined that experience and did their best to help trump. A candidate has absolute approval rights over their pledged delegates because these delegates can change their votes and these delegates represent the candidate and campaign. I helped vet Clinton delegates and I know that I was vetted. The Clinton campaign told us that we represent her and that our actions would reflect on her and her campaign.
In contrast, sanders sent one very weak text the Sunday night before the convention and then did little or nothing to control his delegates. It was nasty I was there when the sanders delegates booed Congressman John Lewis. I was warned about this stunt 30 minutes before it happened by the Clinton campaign whip. According to my whip, sanders was asked to stop this event and declined. That incident will be used against sanders if he runs in 2020.
I was at the Texas delegation breakfast when a group of sanders delegates marched in and demanded that we condemn Clinton and change our votes to sanders.
sanders spoke to the Texas delegation the next morning and his speech was again solely about himself. There was a mini-riot due to his delegates the prior morning and the only thing that sanders talked about was himself. sanders did nothing to deal with the fact that his delegates were out of control and did nothing to try to help Hillary Clinton win the general election.
Finally a group of sanders delegates yelled at my daughter and called her the c-Word because she would not try to get me to change my vote. Again sanders was asked to tell his delegates to behave during the convention and sanders refused

(1,736 posts)She needs to let the voters vote, or run again herself.
The Clintons dominated Democratic politics from 1992 - 2016. A quarter century is enough.
Inserting these editorials into the primary is bound to stoke divisions, and it won't convince anyone to change their viewpoints.
Why not raise more money for Biden and mentor some emerging candidates???

(42,862 posts)Immediately after the convention, BS had a golden opportunity to show true leadership and help to bring people together during those critical weeks. Instead, he was completely silent... for WEEKS!! Instead of helping to soothe hurt feelings, he allowed people to wallow in their own anger and remorse. Those feelings became toxic and resentful.
It's really a shame.

(42,862 posts)True. Thank you. I'd have hoped that other things would have ranked higher on his list of priorities. The fact that PERSONAL considerations were more important to him reveals much, and it's not a very flattering revelation.
