How do you fall for the Bernie Sanders scam?' Martin O'Malley on the Democrats and Iowa<snip>
Bernies still being given a bit of a free pass by the national media, he says. I do not believe that he would be a strong candidate for our party in the fall. And, except for three months out of every four years, hes not even of our party.
Sanders sits in the Senate as an independent, a democratic socialist, the d very much lower-case. He may be 78 but hes popular with the young. Since leaving office, OMalley has taught at Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Boston College and Carnegie Mellon.
I would frequently tell my students, Look, I know in my own generation we fell for the Nigerian prince scam, but how do you all fall for the Bernie Sanders scam? I dont get that.
Heres a guy who has been a kind of stalwart of the National Rifle Association, a man who said immigrants steal our jobs right up until he ran for president, a guy who said the sound of John Kennedys voice made him nauseous.
<snip>
"I respect the fact that hes been saying the same things, mostly, since 1952, albeit dialing down his hatred for John Kennedy and his disdain for immigrants, but I just dont get the appeal.
Hes a man who never has accomplished anything in public office, who has I believe demonstrated his inability to forge a governing consensus, let alone hold a governing consensus. And I think hed be an awful choice as our partys nominee.

'Sandy Phillips, who lost her 24-year-old daughter, Jessi, in the mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado seven years ago, cant forgive Sen. Bernie Sanders, now a top-tier candidate for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.
Sanders, in the House at the time, supported a 2005 law backed by the National Rifle Association granting gun manufacturers broad legal protections and was one of 59 Democrats to vote for the legislation in the GOP-led House. Sanders and Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio are the only Democratic presidential candidates to have voted for that bill, which Phillips said nearly bankrupted her family.
Phillips says she called Sanders during the 2016 presidential primary campaign when he was competing against Hillary Clinton, asking for an explanation of his vote.
He was like Id love to talk to you about this, but Im really busy, Phillips told NBC News, describing him as extremely dismissive and arrogant.
In early 2016, days before the Iowa caucuses, Sanders, a Vermont independent, announced he would co-sponsor a repeal of the law as he faced criticism over his position. Weeks later, he contradicted himself, saying gun crime victims should not be able to sue only to reverse course again days later during a debate by saying, They have the right to sue.'

Why?
Isreali newsite Haaretz finally discovered the name of the kibbutz he stayed at in 1963 - 53 years after he was there. During the 2016 campaign. He kept it secret all that time. Google Bernie's Stalinist Kibbutz. It's all there.
And Politico found out that he had been lying about his son's real mother for decades, again in 2016.
Things got testy -
"I wanted to know more about who he has been. So I asked what I thought was an innocuous question about Sanders son. How did Sanders juggle aspirations as an eager political activist with his role as a divorced young father?
Thats out of bounds, Franco said.
Out of bounds?
Its none of your f-ing business, he said. He smiled, but he wasnt joking.
Its always been that way with Sanders. The issues. The issues. Stick to the issues. The rich are too rich. Those with power have too much. The middle class is withering. Inequality is a crisis, and the system is rigged. With Sanders, what you see is what you get, insist the people who know him best and thats almost all you get."
'Can't answer questions!' 'Look, Oligarch!!' 'Rockefellers too.' Bullshit. He didn't answer because he was fucking lying.
And this is the guy Tim Robbins called 'our moral center' and whom John Cusack called 'our North Star.' (I think he was higher.)

(3,011 posts)That Sanders is unelectable is a basic fact. Being enthusiastic about him, or (as I do) respecting his policy ideas, won't change that fact.
I urge people not to vote for him for the basic reason that I want to promote progressive causes. After a string of losses from 1972 through 1988 (1976 excepted) with progressive candidates, the Democratic Party went with someone more centrist in 1992. Clinton did a lot of good, but not as much good had he been a solid progressive. Still, it's better to get some of our policy goals enacted than none of them.
If Sanders becomes the nominee, we won't see a progressive come this close to nomination for at least a generation.

This thread has people calling Bernie a con man. Is that a Bash? You didn't but you have a hard time with the definition of "fact".
It is not anywhere close to a fact that Bernie is unelectable. In every way imaginable that is an opinion. You are entitled to your opinions but it is inauthentic and wrong to assert that your opinion is "fact". Especially given polls that show he can win. The existence of auch polls is a "fact". You can argue that it is your Opinion that the polls are wrong.
Better yet would be to refrain from bashing/attacking/joining endless daily negative posts about a candidate that FACTUALLY is supported by significant numbers of democratic voters adding unneeded division into a race.

(3,011 posts)They should be disregarded. Seriously.
These polls are taken before the Trump campaign has started going after the candidate. Sanders is very easily tarred as a communist, a deadbeat dad, a draft dodger (not that Trump isn't one as well), and anti-American. There are videos of Sanders at anti-US rallies in Nicaragua; they're old, but they exist nonetheless.
The polls won't matter until we have a presumptive nominee.

(787 posts)Do you have any doubt or dispute that a sizeable number of Democrats support him. This has nothing to do with whether he will win or lose in the Primaries or to Trump. I do not care of it was 5%. A sizeable number of democrats in this country like and support Bernie Sanders. Do you think calling their supported candidate a Con Man and calling them inherently gullible is productive? Is it unifying or divisive? Do you think it helps us beat Trump? In my post do you see me attacking any other candidate. I am saying stop calling Bernie Sanders names and dissing his supporters. This is bad politics and strategy and he is not even my candidate. 64. Exactly how does sanders voter revolution work in the real world?
It is my understanding that even sanders has acknowledged that he cannot adopt his platform unless he holds rallies and this voter revolution occurs. Is this correct? How does this voter revolution work in the real world? Again as I understand this concept, so many new voters will rise up and force the GOP to be reasonable. Is this correct? How many new voters does it take to accomplish this goal and where are these voters? How will these new voters force the GOP to be reasonable when so many GOP officeholders are in gerrymandered districts? Will these new voters move to these districts in time to vote for sanders platform? If these new voters are real, then why are theses new voters not showing up in the polls? New voters in such large numbers so as to cause the GOP to be reasonable should show up in polling. Are these new voters waiting for something? If these new voters really exist in the real world, why has sanders not used these new voters to get some meaningful legislation passed?
I look forward to answers to these questions

(793 posts)Bernie Sanders is a lot of things, some of which are negative, but this interview is slimeball stuff. Martin O'Malley is a thoroughly decent moderate, but the first paragraph of the article makes the baselessness of his positions on Sanders pretty plain. We were through all that garbage four years ago. Bernie Sanders is on our side, as far as I can tell. He has been very, very consistently so, which MOM acknowledges in the interview.
[I think the only possible counterargument is the Brady bill and, though I don't agree with his position there, it is very much representative of his people in Vermont. Vermont is pretty loose regarding guns.]
Anyhow, when someone left of Biden makes these sorts of arguments about Biden (DINO, fair weather Democrat, look at his voting record on X (the Iraq war, etc)) this site seizes on that as spreading discord and dividing what needs uniting, and I think that is probably mostly good. But when it goes the other direction, the difference in response is pretty telling. Don't fall for it. If the guy is our nominee then I think we all need to be ready to not just vote but to GOTV.

You dont know. Nobody knows. This is impossible to predict, Sanders conceded, leaving ODonnell stunned.

Bernie Sanders cannot answer key question about Medicare for All: How to get it done
"South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who wants to start with a public option as a "glide path" to a single-payer system, said it's not clear to him how else to get to Medicare for All.
"Everybody who says Medicare for All, every person in politics who allows that phrase to escape their lips, has a responsibility to explain how you're actually supposed to get from here to there," he said."
'And this continues to be the big difficulty for Sanders. He was actually asked at the debate how he exactly he would enact Medicare for All.'
"I will tell you how we'll do it," Sanders said. "We'll do it the way real change has always taken place, whether it was the labor movement, the civil rights movement, or the women's movement. We will have Medicare for All when tens of millions of people are prepared to stand up and tell the insurance companies and the drug companies that their day is gone, that health care is a human right, not something to make huge profits off of."
That's a really good way to explain how people who support Medicare for All can lobby for it. But it does very little to answer the question of how he'd actually do it.'

Bernie Sanders meets with the Daily News Editorial Board, April 1, 2016
'During his interview and elsewhere on the trail, Sanders has been beaten up for not specifying how he will pass his agenda through Congress, which observers astutely note is controlled by Republicans rather than democratic socialists. Clinton does not get the same question, though it applies equally to her more moderate agenda. The answer that Sanders gives and gave again to the Daily News does not, in the eyes of the media, qualify as an answer. But there are only a handful of possibilities:
1. Republicans suddenly agree to pass his agenda.
2. Sanders compromises with Republicans, in which case he doesnt pass his agenda.
3. A political revolution sweeps Republicans out of office and changes the contours of the debate.'

(10,235 posts)Sander or against Biden (it's always a front runner) they can make you so angry that you won't vote in the general election like they did with Hillary and Sanders when Trump stole the election.
Take all this negative politics with a grain of salt. Putin wants you NOT to merely dislike Biden's or Sender's policies. He wants you so angry at them, so repulsed by the supposed badness of the candidate that you will not vote.
Negative politics discourages voters. They feel both sides are so awful that they are not really making a choice so they stay home. So take all this trash about any Democratic candidate with a huge grain of salt. Know that Putin is exagerating the negative of all Democratic candidates so Dumpy can win.
Sanders has never ever been given a free pass. He is criticized both by more conservative Democrats and by GOP. Anyone who claims Sanders is not criticized or attacked is not being honest.
Anyone who compares Bernie or Biden or any Democratic candidate to Dumpy Trumpy is not being honest either. Fake comparisons to Trump, minimize Trump's crimes and feed into Putin's election rigging.
Know that none of the Democratic candidates are as nasty and criminal as Dumpy Trumpy, ever.

Otherwise, he's talking shit about it. I didn't know about his being on board with the NRA on such crucial things as the Brady Bill and background checks.
There is a large contingent of the cult of Bernie here. I support many of the goals he espouses. Healthcare for all, raising taxes on the wealthy, bringing back Glass-Steagal and more. The problem is, no President, not Bernie, not Warren, not Biden, no President is going to be able to deliver all that. They have to pick subset, form a coalition and work to get that subset enacted. Bernie doesn't have a lot of success in this respect. No major legislation to his credit.

(5,969 posts)This is the opinion of a Democratic public figure. Criticism is still allowed.
I think calling Bernie a stalwart of the NRA is pushing it way too far but the other points aren't bashing. It's true that Bernie has only recently been a Dem every four years out of convenience, that he railed against immigrants and that he hasn't achieved much in public office.

(5,969 posts)And it's noticeable that those who disagree with the points brought forward do their best to stay away from countering those but merely insult the source. Maybe that's a common behavior of those falling for scams. You don't want to be the one being fooled.
But is an interesting question, why do people fall for this scam? I think there are several parts. First, promises that may be appealing but are eventually hard or impossible to get through Congress, especially by someone whose legislative achievements are very thin and who isn't known to work well with others.
What works for him is that if you aren't held accountable to explain how you can implement and pay for those goals, it's easy to promise everything. Of course, once you are asked to provide more details, we've seen Bernie crumble fast. Bernie doesn't even have the numbers for some of his promises, it's actually laughable.
Secondly, a common enemy (in Sanders' case one of those is the Democratic party) as the scapegoat for your own failures has been a cheap but powerful tool throughout history. People are susceptible for these ploys.
And in the end, how are you even going to govern when you regard both sides as the enemy? He gets cheers for railing against the "Democratic establishment" (whoever that is) but you'd be lucky to find support for renaming a post office as President with this attitude.

(787 posts)You are posting a scurrilous attack piece which calls a Democratic Candidate a con man and compares him to the phone scammers using Nigerian Prince Scams. Then the piece goes on to bash his supporters as obviously gullible for falling for a scam. The rest of this thread is full of the amen corner who chime in to add slurs to this thread and then add to other posts saying that Bernie supporters are divisive and creating disunity.
This is not vetting this is bashing in the extreme and should have no place in Democratic candidates. Leave this type of politics alone. It is beneath Democratic Voters.

(787 posts)Next time you want to accuse other democrats of being divisive or attacking your favorite candidate remember the time you supported someone calling a democratic candidate a con man and his supporters gullible and then posted about how divisive his supporters are.
I am 62 years old, have voted in every election. I have been on this site for years and years but stopped posting because every single day that I logged on, I saw posts like the OP and posts from others including you (I do recognize your name) bashing relentless other candidates and democrats all the while pleading victimhood. Every day, day after day, thousands and thousands of posts including this one.

(787 posts)Ugh. I never thought that I would see so low an attack on democrats who should have the freedom and respect to support who they support without such name calling.. I can support you not liking a candidate. Calling him a con man and his supporters gullible is so far beyond the pale that it is embarrassing. The sad part is you do not see it and will post at least 100 more times today claiming that he and his supporters are divisive. It is sad and is making me sick to see this kind of attack here. I am embarrassed for you. Bye

(787 posts)When I used to post, I did post my opinion that she had electability problems because of her unfavorable polls and thought the Democratic Party should put up a candidate without those net unfavorables. It turns out my concerns were valid.
I have never called Hillary a name. I have no memory of a post where I compared something she did to something Karl Rove might have done but I am 100% positive I never called her a name. Nor can I search my old posts.
I liked Hillary in 2008 but had problems with her running in 2016 and control over the DNC. Mostly, I thought and wrote that she was the wrong candidate which was proved by losing in 2008 first which proved her democratic party support was not universal and because she charged up the republican base which hates her. I do not call others names or call them idiots for having opinions so you are either lying out right or twisting something I wrote. And if I wrote something that could be read that way, I would be happy to retract it. The constant attacks and need to defend ones support of a candidate are a big reason why I stopped posting although I have continued to read. You will know that by seeing how few my posts have been till recently
If you look at what I have written today and yesterday (and I am not even sure why I bothered or wanted to post again here) you will see 0 attacks on other candidates and mostly calling out people who are both attacking candidates and supporters while claiming that that other candidates supporters are being divisive. That is my opinion and I think its a pretty good practice.

(787 posts)It really is too bad you don't see it. Further the OP inherently calls his supporters which by polls seems to be at least 20% of the national democratic party gullible. Your OP gives true meaning to what is a divisive post and it is sad that people chiming in here with their OPINIONS can not see that. If Bernie is the candidate and loses to Trump, will you blame yourself for posting division and attacking our candidate in a divisive manner or will you just throw that at Bernie.
And believe it or not, because I recognize the insanity of the position of attacking Bernie but recognize that people like the people on this thread wll continue to be divisive, I support and intend to vote for Elizabeth in this race if still in when the primary gets to my state solely because of the irrational treatment of Bernie within the democratic party that Elizabeth will not face. I love Bernie and supported him in the last election but favor Elizabeth only because the Democratic Party divide and the hatred against him by Democrats solely cause he had the effrontery to run in the last election against your candidate who then lost. It is rather disgusting and is the true source of division in the Democratic Party.

It's a head scratcher for me. What do people see in Sanders? We all would love a world of free healthcare and income equality, but he can't articulate a plan to get there, and his choice of staff and advisors is contentious and divisive. I have no reason to believe he'd govern any differently.

1974 - Bernie Sanders is running for US Senate (LUP) Complaining that the electric utility Central Vermont Public Service's 20 major stockholders were wealthy out-of-state residents candidate Bernie proposes to co-op and collectivize this evil across line shit.
'Deny further electric rate increases to the utility, forcing it into bankruptcy...then purchase the utility on bankruptcy terms,' Sanders says. Once ownership completed '...each electric customer would become a stockholder in the utility, and each would own one share of stock.'
In a bankrupt utility.
That utility today - Sold 38 years after Bernie said that to a Canadian firm Energir w/ '...more than $7 billion in assets.'
