Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumHypothetical: choose one
I honestly respect Steyer for his impeach45, needtoimpeach campaign even before he announced his candidacy.
Bloomberg put his money on super tuesday states in the form of mass advertising. The way he skipped the first primaries bothers me. However, his ads are ripping trump, so I applaud his efforts.
Which billionaire would you choose to be our nominee if it came to it?

(13,390 posts)They went into effect for the legislative branch in MO in 2002 and it has been a horror show. Elected office is now training ground for paid lobbyists who roam the halls of Jefferson City handing out bills for newly elected naive legislators to sponsor and vote on. It took money in politics to a new level of corrupt and has benefited wealthy people and especially republicans tremendously. It's more expensive to run for office without incumbency.

(17,788 posts)He and Trump have a history and I think Bloomberg would put out a lot of ugly, embarrassing information about Trump. Trump hates Bloomberg, and I think he's afraid of him. That fear could make Trump more unhinged and erratic, scaring voters away.

(59,254 posts)Bloomberg can win. Steyer likely couldn't. I say that because Bloomberg has been campaigning for weeks and has managed to get momentum. Steyer has been campaigning for months, and before that he did his ads, and he has never gotten much of a following.
I really hate a lot of things Bloomberg has done. On a personal level, he shit all over my union and my paycheck directly. And stop and frisk was disgusting.
I also really like a lot of things Bloomberg has done. Climate change is the most important issue to me because if we don't address it all the others are moot. Bloomberg is excellent on climate change. Also, he is one of the few doing anything on gun control.
He's not my favorite guy. I like Liz best. But I think he is the one who could win most handily. He's very smart in how he is campaigning. He has unlimited money. He understands, in a way that the rest of the Democratic Party just doesn't, that we suck at messaging and messaging is everything.
In this election, all I care about is winning. I think I'm leaning toward supporting Bloomberg.
Damn. I can't believe I said that.

(13,133 posts)Im feeling somewhat the same. I will still vote for my favorite candidate in the primary. I hope she wins.
However, Im trying to look at the other candidates' positive positions in preparation for a nominee that I havent given much thought to, or pretty much disagree with some of their stances.
Once our candidate is selected....its go time.

(18,690 posts)Steyer has been on Trump since day one.
I voted Bloomberg because of Bloomberg's unique social position and ability to get beneath Trump's skin like no other candidate. Bloomberg has exactly zero fear of Trump, and he knows where Trump's vulnerabilities are and is hitting them by subtly humiliating him. Trump would rather you fear or hate him than laugh at him. Bloomberg will be doing a lot of laughing. I'm hoping that through Bloomberg's ads we all learn where Trump's real vulnerabilities are and laugh at him as well rather than fear him (or, to put it more precisely, try to conceal our fear at least until november).
Secondly, Bloomberg has promised to support the Democratic nominee no matter who, and to throw his 1,000-person strong campaign machine (and all the data and research that comes with it) behind that candidate, in addition to the potentially billion + war chest.
"In God we trust. Everyone else bring data." - Bloomberg
We could use that data!

(13,390 posts)If absolutely forced, I might vote for Bloomberg's transportation plan. At the same time it would be painful with his record on stop and frisk and body shaming. Still, having some government experience is better than Steyer's complete lack. Term limits is a deal breaker for me because I have seen them at work. I am hoping to see some movement after IA and NH and cast an enthusiastic vote for whomever our nominee turns out to be.
