Electoral alliances as a path to winning

Last edited Sun Feb 2, 2020, 02:42 PM - Edit history (1)

Yesterday another DUer put up an OP promoting the importance of big tent coalition-building among Dems as the most likely way to defeat trump & co. (I can’t locate it so if anyone remembers, please post a link here so that DUer gets props and folks can see his thoughtful exposition).

I keep thinking back to his point, which was not only to decry the intraparty partisanship that is renewing the fracture in our party, but that we can dramatically strengthen our chances of winning bigger in November if we make a concerted effort to coalesce around our shared values now.

We have far more in common than with our Orange Opponent and his disgusting crew. But where is most of the energy going in the press/social media? It’s mostly an echo chamber of low level, schoolyard sniping instead of discussion that raises the best ideas to the top.

Other successful governments function by building interparty, not just intraparty, alliances in order to get control of the government. What about us? Is this what we need in these times?

Has anyone heard anything about Dems building an alliance or even making overtures to the Greens? We “otherize” them because of Nader and Stein, but if their top people are compromised/corrupted, why not appeal to their next level down, the ones who care more about the planet than their own personal benefits. Greens are fundamentally passionate about the planet and so are Dems. Are our candidates or the DNC entreating them to join hands? That could make all the difference, right there. Maybe that sounds like pie in the sky but these are desperate times for the planet.

And what about the Christian Left? Are we building a unified, vocal alliance with them?

It is crazy that nearly half the country still supports trump. We desperately need strong, unified messaging to motivate voters. We need any of our candidates to take the lead on building as broad an alliance as possible.

(Anyone who bashes any candidate in this thread obvs doesn’t get it.)

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
