One of the things any US President has to do well is get along

with people. That's most important when dealing with foreign heads of state, but also applies to other relationships. It's one of the chief characteristics that is essential in a President who hopes to accomplish much, especially in foreign relations. Our current chief executive is horrible in that regard, as his shoving aside a head of state in his zeal to take a prominent position in a crowd illustrates.

Trump makes enemies where he should make friends and toadies to people who are our natural enemies.

When I look at the current list of candidates for the Democratic nomination, that is one of the areas I look at closely. Between the two current leaders in the primary race, there are distinct differences in that regard.

Bernie Sanders is impatient and irascible in his relationships with others. He is so convinced that his ideas are the only correct ones that he tends to dismiss others far to quickly and with considerable rudeness. That will not play at all well in international relationships. Each national leader of any country is also a high achiever and has risen to that leadership position, in one way or another. Sanders' dismissive style of relationships will be a detriment to achieving successful agreements, and that's not what we need right now. He tends to tell people bluntly what they should do, instead of politely negotiating agreements. Bernie is always right, in his own mind, and he will not bend, even when there is a need for flexibility.

Joe Biden, on the other hand, is a hand-shaker and a smiler. He may think he has the right approach to something, but will listen to the other person's positions politely, especially when they are his peers as heads of state. He will not, however, toady to anyone, and will speak out in opposition when confronted by another peer, if needed. However, his skills at foreign relations are pretty well honed, through practice and experience. Following the 2020 elections, there is going to be a critical need for fence-mending with people who have been long-time allies and friends. Trump has severely damaged those relationships. Biden is well-suited to that job. Bernie Sanders is decidedly unsuited for the same job.

So, that's one of my decision points. That's one of the most important reasons I support Joe Biden to be our nominee and next President.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
