Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumHypothetical question to Joe Biden supporters.
Let's say by some chance Bernie wins the Democratic nomination. Would you vote for him?
Bernie supporters are constantly asked this same question with regards to Joe Biden. My answer is always an unequivocal yes, I will vote for Joe if he's the nominee. However, considering all the, to put it mildly, energetic antipathy there seemingly is for Bernie and his supporters here, I'm genuinely curious how Joe Biden's supporters would answer that same question if Bernie is the nominee.
Thanks in advance.

(4,494 posts)I will vote for the candidate of the Democratic party, and I will not threaten otherwise.
I will not say, "they have to earn my vote".
That said, I believe that if Sanders wins the Democratic nomination, we will lose to Trump in a landslide.

(58,785 posts)somehow win, we'd lose the house, along with the senate, and no doubt control of number of state governments to the Republicans. An electorate who turned the nation over to a far-left socialist would be virtually guaranteed to "balance" him with a Republican congress.
So a Sanders presidency would be a second-best possible outcome for McConnell and those he fronts for.
That said, who else could a responsible Democrat try to put in power? Either our nominee or Trump will be our next president.

(28,817 posts)On DU there is only one answer to that question and you should know that.
Answering negatively might get one bounced. If you do know that why ask such a question.
On DU we vote for the Democratic candidate. Period.

(12,157 posts)I find much I like in the candidates. When it comes time to vote in the primary I will choose one. At heart I am a yellow dog democrat and will vote for anyone as long as they are democrats. Bernie is a bit troublesome as he is not a member of our party, but if he is the nominee of the party he will get my vote.

40% of Yang's supporters reportedly said they will only vote for Yang, despite Yang making it abundantly clear that he believes all of us should vote for the eventual Dem nominee whoever they may be. I've noted some Sanders supporters are signaling likewise and this scares the sh...t out of me. Hopefully, they will rethink should Bernie not be the nominee.
I have not heard supporters of Warren, Buttigieg, Biden, Klobuchar say they would only support their favored candidate. Obviously, there might be some, but I'm not aware of any announcing ahead of time.
I think the volatility and proportion of "undecideds" confirm that the overwhelming priority of Dems is to vote out Trump... decisively. We won't do that (and might not overwhelm vote/voter manipulation on election day if we don't unite to do so.

I'm not a Joe Biden supporter, but if he's our nominee, I'm behind him 110%. It's not about me ... it's about the well-being of our country and probably the globe.

(68,576 posts)I of course will vote Sanders...but if just a few AA stay home because their wishes were not considered, we lose and the house too most likely...but I believe Joe will do it...and if not Joe than Bloomberg...so I hope never to have to vote for Sanders. If Warren is viable she is my second choice with a decent VP who can carry the Mid West.

(48,978 posts)saying they won't vote for the nominee if it's Sanders.
This poll simply serves no purpose.
And I haven't seen any similar polls posted asking Sanders supporters similar questions if Biden is the nominee, trying to see if any of them are unwise enough to say publicly here that hey won't vote for the nominee.
As for "energetic antipathy" -- there's certainly been a hell of a lot of energetic antipathy toward Biden, but possibly as a Sanders supporter you're so used to it you don't notice it.

(1,773 posts)It's not a trap of any kind. As I stated in the OP, it's a question Bernie supporters are frequently asked with regards to Joe Biden. Perhaps asking Biden supporters a more in-depth question about their feelings regarding a hypothetical Bernie win would have been made for a more compelling discussion, but there are plenty of threads here already in which Biden supporters have made their feelings about Bernie known. Such a question would've seemed redundant.

(628 posts)and people still think he can beat Trump.
Biden has run a awful campaign to date. He cannot raise money - he cannot generate enthusiasm - he lost a big lead in Iowa
This imaginary belief that he is best to beat Trump was because of name recognition - we need a candidate that people will want to vote for - be excited for. Bernie, Warren, Pete, Yang accomplish that.

(145,241 posts)I saw how sanders and his supporters supported the party at the National Convention. Normally going to a national convention is a once in a life time experience. I have worked really hard inside the party on campaigns and voter protection issues for a very long time to earn this trip. Too bad that sanders and his vetted delegates ruined that experience and did their best to help trump. A candidate has absolute approval rights over their pledged delegates because these delegates can change their votes and these delegates represent the candidate and campaign. I helped vet Clinton delegates and I know that I was vetted. The Clinton campaign told us that we represent her and that our actions would reflect on her and her campaign.
In contrast, sanders sent one very weak text the Sunday night before the convention and then did little or nothing to control his delegates. It was nasty I was there when the sanders delegates booed Congressman John Lewis. I was warned about this stunt 30 minutes before it happened by the Clinton campaign whip. According to my whip, sanders was asked to stop this event and declined. That incident will be used against sanders if he runs in 2020.
I was at the Texas delegation breakfast when a group of sanders delegates marched in and demanded that we condemn Clinton and change our votes to sanders.
sanders spoke to the Texas delegation the next morning and his speech was again solely about himself. There was a mini-riot due to his delegates the prior morning and the only thing that sanders talked about was himself. sanders did nothing to deal with the fact that his delegates were out of control and did nothing to try to help Hillary Clinton win the general election.
Finally a group of sanders delegates yelled at my daughter and called her the c-Word because she would not try to get me to change my vote. Again sanders was asked to tell his delegates to behave during the convention and sanders refused
I have real concerns about sanders supporters actually supporting the nominee of the party given this experience.
