MSNBC panel on messy caucus: This is like politics, dealmaking in Senate, more than democracy
They're talking about the dealmaking and horsetrading done to get bills passed.
Which is NOT democracy. Not really representation of voters.
It's politics.
So...the caucuses replaced insiders making deals with average citizens making deals, for whatever reasons.
Apparently just friendship, judging by some of what I've seen on MSNBC, rather than individual preferences.

have mobility problems, or who cannot take off several hours to appear in person.
In others words, the caucus really doesn't want one vote per person or they would have a primary
