Caucuses are a more recent invention (late 19th - early 20th century). Ironically, they were intended to take management of state and local politics out of closed-door proceedings controlled by party officials and open them up to ordinary citizens. That was probably OK when there were meetings of the locals in little towns 100 years ago but now it's just an undemocratic, chaotic mess.
