(94,535 posts)As for phoning in the results of THOUSANDS of precincts, the IDP assumed that the reporting app would work.

(17,235 posts)Summary data sent from each precinct to HQ should be able to be processed easily with an adequately trained staff. One vote for each voter for one candidate, period.

But go ahead ...

Do we really want a system but its very structure excludes people?

(2,227 posts)That is what the Iowa caucus is trying to do. They allow re-allotment of the first choice votes who didn't make the threshold.
Similar to electronic voting where you can pick a second choice.
But this isn't electronic (their one touch with their electronic app apparently didn't go well, initiating the delay..), the vote tallies are on... wait for it...
PAPER, while everyone around them was helping to make the count. Much more dependable than anything electronic.

(17,235 posts)Paper trails are mandatory regardless of voting system. The failed app should be scuttled permanently. There are no excuses and the Iowa Caucuses should end and be incorporated into Super Tuesday. I believe all primaries throughout the USA should be done in one day; over and done with.

your criticisms would hold a little more weight .. if they didn't go counter to everything that has been discussed over the past three (and possibly longer) years.

(17,235 posts)I think a paper ballot put in a box and counted by human hands, with verification, is second to none in security and hard copy backup. Electronic voting systems enable fraud.

If *I* were going to ratfk, I'd wait till a much bigger chance to make things really messy.
But we can't discount it; establishing a cluster like this as the 'new normal' would work for them, too.

(36,793 posts)All voting should be done with paper ballots.
These machines cannot be trusted.
In accounting classes, one idea of trust is an audit trail.
Folks not wanting an audit trail are suspect.

(11,306 posts)I'm not saying no, but you do realized that could take a considerable amount of time? Ballots with multiple races and multiple propositions and issues? In national elections some precincts and polling places will see very high numbers. Are we willing to forego having CBS call the race before midnight? (rhetorical question)
