Remember... this funky system in Iowa this year is BECAUSE of Bernie's people complaining about 2016

This was an attempt to alleviate Bernie's concerns.

That's the reason we had the process changed this year.

In Iowa, anxiety and unpredictability cloud caucus finish

New rules have also left the campaigns working in overdrive to set expectations. For the first time, the Iowa Democratic Party will release three sets of results: who voters align with at the start of the night; who they pick after voters supporting nonviable candidates get to make a second choice; and the number of state delegate equivalents each candidate gets.

The new rules were mandated by the Democratic National Committee as part of a package of changes sought by Sanders following his loss to Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential primaries. The revisions were designed to make the caucus system more transparent and to make sure that even the lowest-performing candidates get credit for all the votes they receive. But party officials in Iowa and at the DNC have privately expressed concerns that multiple campaigns will spin the results in their favor, potentially creating chaos on caucus night.

The AP reported the answer last night

The new rules were mandated by the Democratic National Committee as part of a package of changes sought by Sanders following his loss to Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential primaries.

The revisions were designed to make the caucus system more transparent and to make sure that even the lowest-performing candidates get credit for all the votes they receive.

But party officials in Iowa and at the DNC have privately expressed concerns that multiple campaigns will spin the results in their favor, potentially creating chaos on caucus night.

The rules were changed to accommodate the BS faction on the Unity Commission.

Tue Feb 4, 2020, 02:16 AM
Feb 2020

Mook apparently didn't build the app, he just consulted with the IDP on how to prevent things from going wrong on election night.

Both parties in Iowa and their app and web development vendors partnered last fall with Harvard’s Defending Digital Democracy Project to develop strategies and systems to protect results and deal with any misinformation that's reported on caucus night.

They worked with campaign experts Robby Mook and Matt Rhodes — as well as experts in cybersecurity, national security, technology and election administration — and simulated the different ways that things could go wrong on caucus night.

Mook, 2016 campaign manager for Hillary Clinton, and Rhodes, Mitt Romney's 2012 campaign manager, helped develop a public-service video to alert campaigns to the warning signs of hacking and misinformation.

Mook works with Harvard’s Defending Digital Democracy Project which developed strategies and systems to protect results and deal with any misinformation that might be reported on caucus night.

And what exactly was Mr. Mook's contribution to the project according to your source?

Mook, 2016 campaign manager for Hillary Clinton, and Rhodes, Mitt Romney's 2012 campaign manager, helped develop a public-service video to alert campaigns to the warning signs of hacking and misinformation.

It was released in 2018, days after a federal indictment detailed how Russian intelligence operatives hacked Clinton's presidential campaign, the DNC and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2016.

Here's what they reported;

Mook works with Harvard’s Defending Digital Democracy Project which developed strategies and systems to protect results and deal with any misinformation that might be reported on caucus night.

Mook, 2016 campaign manager for Hillary Clinton, and Rhodes, Mitt Romney's 2012 campaign manager, helped develop a public-service video to alert campaigns to the warning signs of hacking and misinformation.

That fact reported by DMR that Mook helped develop a PSA morphed into the abject fiction that "Mook was responsible for the app" ...and then it was posted here.

No wonder they were worried about disinformation.

But relying on this app without making sure it worked was crazy. And that wasn't Bernie's idea.

And how it relates to trying to download & log into the new app.

I couldn't do it this past Saturday to participate in a webinar. Had to use my neighbor's computer since my internet connection failed to connect.

No phone number to call to ask for help LIKE THEY SAID THAY WOULD.

My good friend who introduced me to volunteering had a difficult time also, and ended up saying "to hell with it - I'm not gonna do it". We canvassed in 120 degree heat together, manned phone banks, etc. Did the last3 or 4 presidential elections.

I did get an email to try again, but it's confusing still. I'm not as tech savvy as the youngins (i'm 67 now), but not a total idiot - I use autocad for chrissakes! Only after the webinar, I figured out that the instructions were for downloading it onto my personal cell phone, not the laptop.

Shouldn’t that have been the very first thing you tried? I’d have to see the instructions myself but typically when someone is talking about an app, they’re talking about a phone app.

If it was supposed to be only used by phone, they should have texted the instructions.

I seldom use email, but text heavily.

The link to the app was in the email.

So no, one cannot assume that.

Tue Feb 4, 2020, 12:00 PM
Feb 2020

I’m curious what went wrong. Was it the backend not able to handle the load or the app couldn’t handle a range of devices? Or a combination of flaws?

Thanks for giving some clues. Not sure how to square that with the narrative that they hired some mook to write this thing and Bernie failed to do an adequate code review. Or something. Yes that’s sarcasm.

It’s a pretty spectacular failure. This isn’t something that would have had millions of users. Maybe a couple of people per precinct or a few thousand total? Or was there an interface for the world to check results and that query load crippled the ability to login to provide results?

Did this company have any experience delivering widely used or critical applications?

Tue Feb 4, 2020, 02:23 AM

.

Designing applications is great on paper and works well when you push though single records or messages, but try doing that when you are performing bulk processing and all kinds of errors expose themselves. The same applies to all other workflow processes, including this one.

The real issue is that Iowa Caucus Dems did not try out this process using enough variables. Period.

Had they done that, they would have detected more flaws in the system and could have corrected them.

They would have had their shit together and wouldn't have been caught with their pants down.

Gah, there’s plenty of reasons to be concerned about getting the count right in the age of tRumpian level ratf*cking. Whether because of glitches, user error, app design, hacking, or other reasons related to the new process, I’m not necessarily gonna get on the bandwagon of angry fist-shaking at the Iowa Democratic Party, yet.

Just don’t have enough information to blame any one thing at this point. Am trying to not get swept up in the hype and typical, hasty media narratives dragging down the image of Democrats’ competency in general. It is so tired.

Get it right - I am willing to wait, because I stand with good-hearted Democrats.

TClinton campaign veterans linked with app that contributed to caucus chaos

The smartphone application blamed in part for the ongoing delay in reporting results of the Monday Iowa caucuses is linked with key Iowa and national Democrats associated with Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.

[ . . . ]

The app was issued by Jimmy Hickey of Shadow Inc., metadata of the program that the Des Moines Register analyzed Tuesday shows. Gerard Niemira and Krista Davis, who worked for Clinton’s 2016 campaign, co-founded Shadow.

[ . . . ]

owa Democratic Party Chairman Troy Price worked as Clinton’s 2016 Iowa political director. He did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday about the relationship between the party and Shadow, which it paid $63,184 for website development and travel expenses, according to reports filed with the Iowa Ethics & Campaign Disclosure Board.

But hey, keep on blaming Bernie.

Look a rule change is simply that. The decision to use an app was an implementation choice made by the Iowa Democratic Party. They chose the firm that developed the app., and chose to use an app that had been insufficiently tested. None of that can be laid at Bernie's feet. And as has been pointed out elsewhere, were it not for the changes Bernie had asked for, there would have been no paper trail to fall back on!

The Bernie slander is outrageous!
