(19,564 posts)Maybe think this stuff through? Do some follow up? If it's your hill to die on, be involved in the process? Is that too much to ask?

(4,377 posts)Its an app to submit some simple numbers and have them tallied. There are only 1200 or so precincts. How hard do you really have to work to manage to mess that up? I know college students who could have written a working app for that on their lunch break.

(19,564 posts)Sure you do. You have no concept of security, or safe delivery.
It's a much more complex process than you seem to think. They paid 50k (reported) for this app. That's literally chump change. Nothing near the level of what this was worth.
They went cheap and paid the price. It broke.
I'll bet you the same company could have done 100 times better for just twice the money. It's about hours and personnel. Time costs money and people need paid for their work.
But, you would know that, right?

(4,377 posts)The line about a student on their lunchbreak was unsurprisingly hyperbole. But the point remains that the basic functionality required for entering and processing such a vanishingly small amount of raw data is incredibly simplistic.
It appears from early reports that part of the issue was delivery rather than functionality, with users (many of whom aren't tech savvy) having to manually install apks onto Android phones, which is ridiculous to start with. The talk about app crashes could be related to that rather than actual functionality software failure, as I'm damned if I see how they could have fucked up that side unless the devs were completely incompetent.
Was it just the low development money? Perhaps, although having trained staff go out and help with installation and basic user training would probably have avoided all this nonsense. I'm not sure spending more on the app itself would have done that much, if the people required to use it didn't know what they were doing.
