This fiasco means the end of the caucuses as a significant American political event. The rest of the country was already losing patience with Iowa anyway and this cooks Iowa's goose. Frankly, it should, Iowa journalism legend David Yepsen tells Politico

(2,657 posts)and as long as Iowa chooses to go first, it will have undue influence on the primaries. Philip Rucker has no clue.

(18,770 posts)He just retweeted the politico story. And I agree with it. IA isn't representative of the Democratic Party and shouldn't hold so much weight in the process.

(2,657 posts)However, the section that Phil Rucker quoted was basically saying, "This cooks Iowa's goose". No, it does not. As long as Iowa can still go first, it will still have undue influence, and I see no indication that Iowa will suddenly no longer go first. Iowa's goose is not cooked if Iowa does not want its goose to be cooked. As for Phil Rucker, when you quote someone without disagreeing with them, it implies that you have no problem with what they are saying.

(24,653 posts)Technological advances in communication are great, but they've also given us unrealistic expectations. And for those of us advocating for paper ballots and hand counts, we have to accept what that means in practical terms. If we go back to less technologically advanced methods of voting to improve confidence in the outcome of our elections, we may not know the results of an election for days or weeks. I'm fine with that, but candidates, campaigns, political parties, and journalists probably aren't that patient.
