(628 posts)I was hoping last night would show that Biden is not the best chance to beat Trump & Pete is the best moderate candidate to beat Trump. But thanks to this mess it gives Biden an undeserved lifeline

(99,710 posts)I am scrupulously trying to avoid the internecine warfare on this board. I am afraid we are going to lose a very winnable race against a despicable and dangerous incumbent.
That's my take.

(99,710 posts)I have very, very...very strong feelings about who is best and worstt equipped to beat Chump but I'm doing my best to keep them to myself for a host of reasons. I'm tired of internet battles, the battles change no minds, and 2016 has made me question my own powers of divination.
I do know with certainty this a consequential election.

I think a lot of people will say
"Let's see what happens in New Hampshire."
And then it's on to South Carolina on Feb 29th.

(11,045 posts)A 4th in NH would put a real dent in his electability argument.
Biden supporters are hanging on SC, and the AA vote in Super Tuesday. HRC racked up 88% of the AA vote according to exit polls. Biden is getting about 45%. Won't be enough.
Neither Biden nor Sanders should of run. Their time has come and gone. There has not been one Democratic president who failed to win the nomination first time around. Democrats are in love with the new and the future, not rear view mirrors.

2) And he thought he was best equipped to do so.
The sad irony is he might have made the task more difficult for the reasons you cited by squeezing out good general election candidates.

(11,045 posts)wanted to run more than anything in 2016. Obama gave the nod to HRC . Biden was passed over by the politician who knew him best.
Democrats are in love with the new. Always have been. Biden, if he wins will be the exception to the rule.

(11,045 posts)He had been subtly weighing in against for a variety of reasons Biden wrote. ...
The president was convinced I could not beat Hillary, and he worried that a long primary fight would split the party and leave the Democratic nominee vulnerable in the general election, Biden wrote. Obama also believed Clinton had the better chance of defeating a Republican opponent in the battle for the presidency. ...
Soon it dawned on Biden that Obama had made up his mind: I found myself saying, Look, Mr. President, I understand if youve made an explicit commitment to Hillary and to Bill Clinton.? ...
Biden stood in the Rose Garden with his wife, Jill, on one side and Obama on the other to announce his decision. ...
Biden didnt want to be making this announcement. He wanted to run; he wanted more than anything in the world to be president. His son Beau had been sensitive to his fathers ambitions and had believed in him as the candidate with the right values for the country. Youve got to run, he told his father a few years earlier. I want you to run. Later, as he struggled with cancer, Beau tried to make his father promise to run, according to Maureen Dowd of the New York Times.
But without Obamas blessing, Biden stayed on the sidelines.

primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
I hadn't thought of that. Every president has his share of misjudgments, but some have a more lasting effect than others. Imagine watching this orange fool in the White House everyday and wondering what you could have done differently. He is always so careful and measured with everything he does and says, but there are so many variables that one can't predict.

(11,885 posts)But it shows he has real problems with certain age groups he has to have to be successful. He'll keep falling in the polls as his opponents rise. I just am not thrilled about him, and his mistakes show he's very venerable, with his policies he proposes.Too many people not wanting him in office unless he wins the primaries indicates he's not what we need. Any Democrat running for the presidency will win , but Biden isn't my first or second or third choice.

(22,912 posts)Enthusiasm is lacking for him. It's one thing to come in second to someone "running in the progressive lane". It's another to come in a distant second to someone "running in the moderate lane" and fourth overall. There is no hiding it. NH will validate the relative lack of enthusiasm for Biden's candidacy.

(1,737 posts)I wouldn't put so much weight on Iowa. Iowa's demographics isn't representative of the diversity of the Democratic base. Unfortunately it's the first state in the primary process. Let's wait until SC. If he does poorly or below expectation then he's in trouble.
